…Rachael Dappa remains best female player in the state
All stood still as unstoppable Inimo makes a statement over the board on Saturday the10th of October, 2020 as he hits the spot for the 3rd consecutive time. The championship organized by the Bayelsa State Chess Association is the 4th consecutive monthly championship.
The state body has assured players of its readiness to put the noble sport on the global map. Players were out in their very best to make statements for themselves at the just concluded event.
Inimo Kigigha proved himself to be much stronger with an outstanding finish with 8.5 points in 9games and he emerged as champion for the month.
Last weekend’s blitz champion, Bomo Kigigha, was pretty unlucky this weekend, after all, its not speedlane contest. This is rapid! After dropping a point to the month’s champion, he fought hard to clinch unto the 2nd position with a massive 8points in 9games.
The 3rd position was keenly contested and it must be in record that the young has grown. Glad Yakie is now a force to reckon with these days in Bayelsa. An interview with Bomo 2nd place winner, he added “Glad Yakie has a style of play that’s capable of upsetting the unprepared master”.
The in-form medical student of the Niger Delta University has made for himself a name that’s above every opens player. He finished 3rd overall with a better tiebreaker. He emerged as the opens champion for the October edition with 6.5points in 9games.
During another opens category, Glad Yakie picks up the gold medal and becomes the best opens player for the first time.
The second place winner in the opens category is one player too many names. Playing chess for leisure has always been part of him and seems to be paying off lately.
Mr Bibo Lambert, Head of Department in the Bayelsa State Sports Council, has proved the critics wrong by this time, yet again taking part in the loot after smiling home last weekend with the blitz 1st prize. Scoring 6points in 9games, he hung the silver medal home.
The bronze medal and 3rd place went home with Mr Gift Ekie. This is one player with a sharp and direct style of play. Underrate him at your own peril. He finished 6points out of 9games.
Similarly, the mother of chess-Bayelsa, Mrs Rachael Dappa, for the umpteenth time has no contender, all the other females seem to bow at her presence when it comes to the 64squares. With 5points in 9games, she is the best female.
Kere Alagoa who has been elevated to the opens category has left big shoe to fill, can the patient Marvelous fill in? All seems rosy as 12yr old Marvelous Innocent makes the headline yet again as he proves Kere’s absence in the junior category wouldn’t be missed. He grabs the loot and the gold medal for this month.
The first runner-up though with a better tiebreaker is Shine Ekperi while Hector Godswill settles for the bronze all with 6points out of 9games.
The Association appreciates the support of Engr. Emmanuel Opigo who graced the closing ceremony with words of encouragement and giving all participants a broader view of the game.
