Okeho-born academia, Professor Olaniyi Jacob Babayemi of the Department of Animal Science, University of Ibadan as been announced as the new President of the Nigerian Society for Animal Production (NSAP). This announcement was made at the just concluded 49th annual conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Ibadan.

Prof Babayemi was unanimously elected as the association’s 16th President since its inception in 1973. The Nigerian Society for Animal Production is a big umbrella of animal production in Nigerian, comprising of Animal Scientists, Veterinarians, Wildlife, Fisheries, Livestock extension and economics, Pasture agronomist, Industrialists, Livestock farmers, Butchers and other relevant agro-allied industries.

Professor Olaniyi Jacob Babayemi is a highly respected leader in animal science. His distinguished career has been marked by impactful research, editorial leadership, and a commitment to advancing the field.

He holds memberships in prominent professional organizations, including the Animal Scientist (RAS), the Nigerian Institute for Animal Science (NIAS), the Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN), and the Nigerian Society for Animal Production (NSAP).

He has been a reviewer for Small Ruminant Research since 2005, contributing valuable insights to 43 articles. Small Ruminant Research awarded him the world’s top 10 reviewers in 2016. This recognition of their expertise led to his appointment as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Journal of Animal Production (2010-2016) and ultimately, Editor-in-Chief (2016-present). Under his leadership, the journal’s publication frequency increased significantly, from two issues per year to five.

His tenure as Head of the Department of Animal Science (2014-2018) was marked by the successful revival of the departmental journal, which had been inactive for 15 years. He has a prolific publication record with over 95 journal articles in both international and local publications.

He has served in other capacities at the University of Ibadan, including as the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and the Director of UishopweL in the same University.

He is a specialist in Ruminant Production and Management, Pasture and Range management, and cattle, sheep, and goat conservation and utilisation. He also supervises Bachelor and Postgraduate students in scientific reporting.
