FEC okays N310b for roads projects

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved three memos and a total of N310 billion for roads projects.

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola briefed State House correspondents at the end of FEC meeting chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa.

He was with the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajuba and the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Laolu Akande.

According to him, FEC approved N79.82 billion for Ibadan-Ilesa-Ife road, N200.176 billion for roads linking second Niger Bridge to Asaba and Onitsha, and N29.654 billion for phase 2 of Kano-Katsina highway.

He said “The ministry of works and housing presented three memoranda and they were approved by the council: construction of Ibadan -Ilesa-Ife Dual Carriage Way, they are connected to Oyo and Osun State at the cost of N79.829 billion.

“Secondly, for the link-road that connects the second Niger Bridge to Asaba and Onitsha. The Asaba link-road was awarded to Julius Berger and the Onitsha link-road was awarded to RCC at the total cost of N200.176 billion.

“So this completes essentially the access road that will link the Bridge in the short time. You might recall that these roads were under-designed when the bridge was awarded.

“So it is this administration that completed the design and we now awarded them so that you can have a bring that has link-roads. This was awarded initially under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) and the bridge in 2010 administration.

“The third approval was for phase two of the Kano-Katsina High Way from the point known as Gidan-Mutum Daya all the way to where Katsina Steel Rolling Mill is. This is a 78KM stretch approved at the sum of N29.654 billion.

“That road is a 152KM road linking Kano and Katsina road from Kano. It was a single length Highway until it was awarded in 2013 by the previous administration in phase 1.

“So we inherited it and we have continued to execute it. The award was to then expand the road into a dual carriage highway way. That means we are constructing the existing one and building another new one. It was awarded for the first 70KM plus for the phase 1 we we have now done is to complete the award to the same contractor so that there is a uniformity of construction.” he said

Nwajuba disclosed that contracts amounting to N1.833 billion were approved for his ministry under Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

The first, he said, is N915 million for construction of Faculty of Environment at the University of Abuja.

He said the second contract is N918 million for construction of Faculty of Education in the same university.

“The memorandum approved was in respect TETFUND intervention programme in respect of University of Abuja. A key component of that was the award of contract at the sum of N915 million for the construction of the faculty of environment.

“Another was also approved for he sum of N918 million for the award to build the faculty of education. Those are the two components arising from the special intervention programme that was awarded then in 2017. So we have to act to give effect to them so that they can proceed the delivery.”

Osinbajo, Ladipo, others to join ‘Great Legends in Africa’

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and some other distinguished Nigerians have been selected to join the league of ‘Great Legends in Africa.’

In a release signed by the Honours Selecting Committee, the Director, Elation Communications, High Chief Darlinghtyn Momoh Umoru said: “These honours are bestowed only on a few men and women, who must have distinguished themselves by those rare qualities of an icon in their various fields of endeavour.”

The statement added that those qualities had been identified in recognition of the achievements of the Vice President’s achievements, his beneficial and unsolicited selfless service to humanity and nation building, not just in Nigeria, but in the whole of Africa.

Consequently, the statement said, VP Osinbajo and a few other men and women, who had equally met the criteria for these honours, would be conferred with the Great Legend in Africa Gold Award at the Nigeria National Merit Award House, popularly called MERIT HOUSE.

Others to be honoured on the occasion include the President General (Worldwide) of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Dr. Rafiu Oladipo, who has had an unbeatable record of supporting football as recognised by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), amongst others.

Also to be recognised, according to the statement, is Prof. John Bosco Akamnonu, the founding father of Tansian University.

The event, which is the third in the series, was originally scheduled for September 28, but it will now hold on October 31, the statement added.

It noted that the epic event would also be used to mark the 10th year anniversary of the organisation.

Cochlear AG donates hearing aid to LASUTH

The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital recently received a donation of a Bone Anchor Hearing Aid Machine from Cochlear AG, a Biological Research and Development Service Provider, domiciled in Switzerland. This machine is designed to help people with conductive hearing losses, unilateral hearing loss, single-sided deafness and people with mixed hearing losses who cannot wear ‘in the ear’ or ‘behind the ear’ hearing aid.

Dr. Olawale Olubi, a Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist in LASUTH introduced the members of the team who presented the donation as the Business Development Manager, Sub-Saharan Africa, David Profeta and the Nigerian Distributor of Cochlear, Speech Culture, Dr. Afolabi Simeon.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, on behalf of the management of the LASUTH, while receiving the donation appreciated the company for deeming it fit to give back to LASUTH and assured that the equipment would be put to good use as patients with hearing loss will benefit maximally from this kind gesture.

The Lights, Camera, AFRICA!!! Film Festival returns to its growing Lagos audience for its ninth edition with the theme “Tales by Moonlight”.

In a statement by the Festival Director, Ugoma Adegoke, “We are proud to once again share exciting and forward-looking films from within the African continent and the diaspora.

Invoking the childhood tableau of the night-time story told to entertain, thrill, delight and teach, this year’s theme harks back to one of the earliest art forms – storytelling. For so long this medium has been used to teach, to learn and for self-preservation.

APC Slams Makinde For Reconstituting OYSIEC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned Governor Seyi Makinde against plan to reconstitute the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC).

In a statement signed by the APC Publicity Secretary in Oyo State, Dr Olatunde Azeez said it got a report the the Governor had forwarded names of his proposed nominees to the State House of Assembly for screening inspite of the pending suit and injunction filed by the dissolved members of the Commission challenging their dissolution as illegal. Reproduced below is the APC statement:

“We are aware all court processes in the suit were formally served on the Governor, Oyo State House of Assembly, the Attorney General, the Head of service and OYSIEC yet the Governor chooses his familiar path of lawlessness.
“This is not the first time the government of Governor Seyi Makinde will disobey court judgement, orders and processes.

We recall that in spite of a judgment of the Supreme court and the direct orders of the Oyo state high court restraining the Oyo state government from dissolving local government councils, nor appointing caretaker chairmen, Governor Makinde disobeyed same blatantly and dissolved the councils.

“Contempt proceedings are now pending against state officials on this. This present step by Gov. Makinde is yet again another challenge to the judiciary and the rule of law by the current administration. It is a shame that the leaders who swore to uphold our constitution are now shredding it and dancing on its tatters.

“This is how recklessness and lawlessness resumes in a society, when the head of govt cannot respect the law, how can an average citizen respect the rule of law. We recall in January 2017 when the administration of Governor Ajimobi was served with a court injunction by a federal high court in Abuja to stop the local government elections from holding, Makinde’s predecessor complied and postponed the elections.

“Rather than follow this noble example, this current Governor has been boasting on air that he will reconstitute OYSIEC and conduct fresh local government elections no matter what, even when an existing judgment forbids it. Such is the direction our state is now sliding to, lawlessness, disobedience, defiance of court and brigandage by those in authority.

“The people will not fold their arms in resignation neither will our great party, the APC. We are however law abiding and will confront this continuing recklessness using all lawful means. We hereby notify the nominees and all the members of the house of assembly, not to lend themselves as tools in the hands of a reckless executive to despise another arm of government, the judiciary.

We therefore urge them not to wallow in another man’s sin by conducting any screening nor should the nominees present themselves for screening before the House, recognizing that every nomination, screening, swearing in or appointment made illegally as threatened and done in defiance of the rule of law shall be voided and set aside by the court under the law.

“We shall on our part continue to stand as a bulwark against disobedience to the rule of law and lawlessness for which the current Governor has become synonymous, rather than the legacy of a safe, law abiding and modern Oyo state which was bequeathed to him.”

Onjo of Okeho Installs Iroko Olugbenga Micheal As New Baale of Bode Land

His Royal Majesty, The Onjo of Okeho land, Oba Rafiu Mustapha Osuolale Adeitan 11, has installed Chief Iroko Michael Olugbenga as the new Baale of Bode land in Okeho, under Kajola Local Government area of Oyo State.

The new Baale, a descendant of Okanlawon Baale Bode Afolabi/ Olaoye, studied Business Management at Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) Ile-ife, Osun State and worked with Ogungbola & Sons Limited as External Auditor, General Manager, BISADET Company (Publishers of Children Monthly Magazine) based in Lagos State, Rep. @ Friendly Top Nig. LTD, Apata NNPC, Ibadan. Also worked at Liberty Stadium, Ibadan as General Manager and currently CEO, Olugbega Michael Agro and Allied Farms, Okeho, Kajola Local Government.

In his speech, Oba Rafiu Mustapha Osuolale urged the young Baale to use his reign to bring development to the town while carrying all sons and daughters of the community along in decision making.

Speaking at the event, the new Baale thanked Oba Rafiu Mustapha Osuolale, all sons and daughters of Okeho home and abroad as well as loving people of Bode for their unflinching support given to him and promised to use his experience and contacts to bring development to the community.

He called on sons and daughters of Bode community, home and diaspora to be back home and give the needed support towards the development of the town.

“I am passionately appealing to all well-meaning sons and daughters of the town, friends and corporate organizations to let us join hands in ensuring that we attract the needed development to our great ancestral home. We are all winners in the contest for this position, there’s no loser as we are all out for the good of the community.”

In keeping with its objective of identifying new areas of growth and competitive advantage, HFMP began commercial operations from its new multi-billion Naira ultra-modern factory in Sagamu, Ogun State during the year under review. On the new Sagamu factory, Jaiyeola said: “Management expects that concentrating pasta production in one location and sales of the increased volumes of pasta will boost revenues for the business, thereby improving operating profits in the coming years.”

In a final message to shareholders, Chairman of the Board, Otudeko, stressed that the Company will continue to innovate and improve its product offerings in order to exceed consumers’ expectations and increase market share.

Rivers State: Mr Project projecting possibilities within 100 days of 2nd term

As part of Governor Nyesom Wike strides in transforming Rivers State, the Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi has attested to the great work being done by Wike when he commissioned the Rumoji International Market yesterday.

Earlier in his message to celebrate the 100 days in office in the second term of his administration. He said, “so many projects are lined up for commissioning during our first 100days during this second term. Buhari sacks Head of Service, Oyo-Ita, replaces with Yemi-Esan

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan as the acting Head of the Civil Service of the Federation with immediate effect.

The decision has therefore put an end to the career of the current occupant of the seat, Winifred Oyo-Ita who had been in the eye of the storm over alleged N3bn bribery and falsification of duty tour allowance.

The President’s decision was conveyed in a statement on Wednesday by the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey.

The statement said Oyo-Ita had been directed to proceed on an indefinite leave to allow conclusion of the investigation being carried out by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Bassey said, “Yemi-Esan, who is the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources takes over from Mrs. Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita, who has been directed to proceed on an indefinite leave to allow conclusion of the investigation being carried out by EFCC.”

The President also directed the OHCSF to commence the process for the selection of new permanent secretaries.

As part of his Community Development Service initiative to reduce technological illiteracy and empower teachers and students, thereby transforming teaching and learning processes in this Information Communication Technology age to a problem -solving abilities, a Corps Member in Kogi State, Awah Favour Matthew with state code KG/18C/1037 has donated 3 laptops and other computer accessories to Government science school, Lokoja, the Kogi state capital.

Awah also organized two weeks intensive training for 70 students, youths and workers in Lokoja with a focus on computer packages like word processing, how to make Android application, how to make effective use of internet and practice skills where he used the ICT Centre at Muslim Community Secondary School and Government Science Secondary School, Lokoja as training centres.

Awah who is a Biochemistry graduate from Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State said “it’s obvious that the world is navigating very fast towards Information technology and we must match the world’s strength and be acquinted with ICT and computer based information, hence the need for the project”.

“I observed that there is inadequate computers and latest ICT accessories in Government Science Secondary School, Lokoja, I took up the task to provide them with laptops and accessories in my little capability”.

I observed that most people working in Public and private paralstatals can afford modern gadget but couldn’t operate them. So, I decided to bridge the gap between the host Community and the born privilege societies through computer based training and they’ve all been introduced to some computer packages like word processing, how to make Android Application, how to make effective use of internet and practice skills during the two weeks of training”.

Mr Ojo Adeola who represented the vice principal the school noted that the accessories will bring about transformation, increased learning gains for students, creating and allowing for opportunities for learners to develop their creativity, problem-solving abilities, informational reasoning skills, communication skills, and other higher-order thinking skills. He promised that the school will make judicious use of the accessories.

“For some time now the ICT center has been abandoned because virtually all the system has developed one fault or the other but he came in though he’s not serving in the school and repair all the faulty ones and bought some necessary accessories along with 3 laptops for the school. He as well trained some of our students on how to make use of the computer for two weeks, we will forever remain grateful to Corper Awah Favour”.

In his words, the State Coordinator of NYSC, Mr. Lasaki Olayiwola who was represented by the supervisor of the project, Mr. Yakubu Mohammed, commend Favour for his selfless service for the State, charging other corps Members to emulate the selfless Service.

The computer teacher of the school, Mrs Adamson Janet express her delight in seeing the ICT center back to a stable condition stressing that it will improve her productivity and positively tranform the students to ICT giants.

Tunisia President — Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali

The former Tunisian President Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali had died in Saudi Arabia. He died on Thursday in Jeddah and that his body is to be transferred to Mecca, awaiting the family’s decision on his burial.

Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia after popular protests ended his 23 years in power. Afterward, the new government confiscated businesses, real estate and luxury cars from 114 members of his family. He was 83 years old.

Members of the Coalition for Revolution on Wednesday held a rally in Lagos to demand the release of members of the movement despite a crackdown on the movement by the Nigerian police.

In the early hours of the day, at least 25 armed police officers were at the national secretariat of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, the publicised convergence point for the protest that was slated for 11 a.m.

Later in the afternoon, members of the movement gathered at Under Bridge in Ikeja, Lagos where they commenced their protest demanding the release of everyone arrested across the country as a result of the August 5 protest.

Addressing members of the public at the venue, Lanre Adeleke, a member of the movement, said they were out to challenge the status quo and to demand the release of their members.

“We are here because of our comrades, Comrade Soetan Adéọlá, Comrade Sowore, Comrade Agba Jalingo and Comrade Olawale Adebayo, aka Mandate. We cannot allow this situation to continue.

“We will not sit down and watch a democratic regime to be terrorising people and turn the system into a tyrannical one and that is why we are here today to say Nigerians will refuse this. We refused under the military, not because we wanted to, but because we wanted freedom.

“We are saying we will not keep quiet and watch our economy being controlled by just one per cent and put everybody in squalor while they control over 90 per cent of the resources of the country.

“We are saying we will not keep quiet while Boko Haram continues to kill people in the Northeast. We are saying we will not keep quiet while Fulani herdsmen continue to kidnap and kill innocent citizens. We are saying we will not keep quiet while education is turned into a trade and one cannot even conceptualise any meaningful knowledge for our youth. We are saying we will not keep quiet while the economy is run into chaos.”
