    CoS: Aviation unions ground activities at airports

    Members of four aviation- National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation Civil Service Technical and Recreation Services Employees, on Monday embarked on a two-day day warning strike over refusal by the Federal government to release reviewed Condition of Service of the workers in aviation agencies.

    As early as 4. am, the workers had gone to the Lagos airport to barricade roads leading into the agencies offices and the airport.

    Part of the reason for the warning strike was the planned demolition of the aviation agencies’ headquarters in Lagos.

    The Unions had late yesterday warned that there was no going back until the Government meets their demands and while speaking to our correspondent this morning, a unionist said they had mobilised as early as midnight with security agencies lurking around to forestall any deterioration of the industrial action.

    The unions also asked their members at other stations to join the strike.

    The action is happening despite a meeting called by the Director-General of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Musa Nuhu hich ended in a stalemate on Sunday.

    It was learnt that representatives of the unions and permanent Secretary, Ministry of Aviation, Dr Emmanuel Meribole, were in attendance.

    Passengers were seen trekking distances with luggage to the airport as vehicular movement was paralysed.

    Cars both private and Commercial, could not move freely as the members barricaded the roads.

    Airline operators said they were flying as aircraft were on the ground but that passengers were delayed due to gridlock caused by the warning strike.

    The strike continues on Tuesday.

    Unions issue 7 day ultimatum over unpaid salaries, non-remittance, others to FAAN Mgt

    Three unions in the aviation industry are set for a showdown with the Management of the  Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) over the non payment of outstanding workers’ salaries, allowances, grants and claims.

    To this end, the unions, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP) have given the Management of FAAN 7 days to pay to avoid workers strike.

    This was contained in a letter dated 7th October, 2020 to the Managing Director, FAAN Captain Rabiu Yadudu.

    The letter signed by Comrade Aba Ocheme, NUATE, Comrade Frances Akinjole, ATSSSAN, and Comrade Abdul Razaq Saidu, ANAP say,  the continue unilateral actions by the management of FAAN, in the increasing delays and staggering of salary payments which have become unbearable, adding that the unions have decided the situation can no longer be tolerated, due to uncontrollable damage to workers and the smooth operations of FAAN.

    The letter read, “Accordingly, management is hereby notified that if within seven days from the date of the notice, all shortfalls in salary payments are not fully rectified and settled, our unions will commence an indefinite industrial action against the authority”.

    The unions says FAAN Management must expedite action to pay the, “full outstanding salaries, full remittances of all outstanding cooperatives, contributive pensions, tax, deductions; full payment of all outstanding allowances, grants, claims.”
