    NNPC, Chevron JV targets 165,000bpd oil production with assets conversion deal

    NNPC Limited on Monday said it has signed a deal with its Joint Venture, JV, partner, Chevron Nigeria Ltd, CNL, for the conversion of five of its JV assets into the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA, terms. The company disclosed that the deal is expected to significantly boost crude oil production, with the two partners focusing on attaining the 165,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) production target by year-end 2024.  

    A statement by Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr Olufemi Soneye explained that the deal is in line with PIA 2021 provisions of transiting assets from the Petroleum Profit Tax (PPT) into PIA terms. Soneye stated that under the new PIA regime, all existing Oil Prospecting Licenses, OPLs, and Oil Mining Leases, OMLs, would be automatically converted to Petroleum Prospecting Licenses, PPLs, and Petroleum Mining Leases, PMLs, upon their expiration.  

    He said: “Nonetheless, an option of voluntary conversion is provided for holders of OPLs and OMLs (Operator, Licensees or Lessees) under the erstwhile Petroleum Profit Tax (PPT) regime. The PIA terms are generally perceived as more investor-friendly, compared to the erstwhile PPTA terms.

    “During a brief ceremony held at the NNPC Towers on Monday, the two partners signed documents on the conversion of five OMLs into four PPLs and twenty-six PMLs, in line with the new PIA terms, marking a significant step towards increasing domestic gas supply and expanding global market presence,” stated..

    Group CEO NNPC Ltd, Mr. Mele Kyari, at event described CNL as one of the most reliable partners for the NNPC Ltd.  

    He was quoted as saying: “Over the years, Chevron has been a partner of choice that has not contemplated completely divesting/exiting (oil production in) the shallow water and we are proud of them”.

    Kyari assured CNL that NNPC Ltd would sustain its partnership with the JV partner so as to create more value for both parties and expand Nigeria’s footprints in the domestic and export gas markets.

    He commended the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, for its exemplary role in midwifing the conversion.  

    Also speaking, the Director, Deepwater and Production Sharing Contract, CNL, Mrs. Michelle Pflueger who stressed the significance of the conversion for both companies, affirmed CNL’s long-standing commitment to the assets.

    On her part, NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President, Upstream, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, highlighted the advantages of the PIA terms over the previous PPT terms, noting that the conversion was a strategic move towards the successful implementation of the PIA.

    NNPC Ltd’s Chief Upstream Investment Officer, Mr. Bala Wunti, noted that the assets conversion is expected to significantly boost crude oil production, with the two partners focusing on attaining the 165,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) production target by year-end 2024.

    Airtel Africa Foundation unveils ‘Airtel Africa Fellowship Program’ to empower students at IIT Madras Zanzibar

    The Airtel Africa Foundation today announced the launch of the prestigious ‘Airtel Africa Fellowship Program’ for the undergraduate students at IIT Madras Zanzibar, the first-ever foreign campus established by an IIT. The Fellowship aims to support deserving students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) in Zanzibar. Starting with an outlay of US$500,000, this program will benefit 10 undergraduate students, for their entire course duration of 4 years.

    Founded in 2024 with a vision to foster a prosperous Africa, the Airtel Africa Foundation is dedicated to advancing digital and financial inclusion across the continent along with key focus on education and environmental protection. This Fellowship is the maiden initiative undertaken to enhance educational opportunities for meritorious students, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, enrolled at IIT M Zanzibar. It is designed to support students from 14 African countries, which are namely Nigeria, Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, DRC, Niger, Chad, Congo B, Gabon, Madagascar and Seychelles.

    Recipients of this scholarship will be known as ‘Airtel Africa Fellows’. They will receive 100% of their college fees i.e. US$12,000 as per the course fee structure of the Institute for a 4-year program. Additionally, to cover the living expense cost, US$500 will be given to all eligible students. This initiative will aspire to transform, shape lives and nurture future leaders who will contribute to technological innovation and economic growth of Africa.

    Commenting on the fellowship scheme, Zanzibar’s Minister of Education and Vocational Training, H.E. Ms Lela Mohamed Mussa said, “IITM Zanzibar is charting a wonderful path in technical education in the region. Providing access to this high quality education to students from Tanzania and the rest of the continent, who are topping the IITM Zanzibar screening and test processes, through financial assistance, is an important priority for us. We are thankful to this support from Airtel Africa Foundation, which will enhance our own efforts in this direction.”

    Africa Practice and Environmental Defense Fund forge Strategic Partnership to Advance Climate Action in Africa

    Africa Practice (AP), a mission-led strategic consulting firm, and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a global nonprofit organisation tackling climate change, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together to address climate challenges and promote sustainable energy solutions across Africa. The partnership was officially announced by Richard Kiplagat, Director at Africa Practice, at the Global Africa Hydrogen Summit taking place in Windhoek, Namibia.

    The MOU aims to support a successful energy transition in Africa by accelerating the reduction of methane emissions from the oil and gas sector, while ensuring that new green hydrogen projects achieve their potential as climate solutions. The MoU outlines several key objectives:

    1. Elevating climate policy discourse: The partnership will focus on disseminating EDF’s research findings to local audiences, promoting more informed debate on critical issues such as hydrogen development and methane reduction.
    2. Amplifying African voices: Africa Practice will work to share African perspectives with global policymakers, ensuring that international climate initiatives are better adapted to local contexts and dynamics.
    3. Methane abatement strategy: A joint advocacy strategy will be developed to address methane abatement opportunities in Africa’s oil and gas sector, including efforts to secure additional signatories to the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter. Cutting methane emissions could slow down climate change by avoiding more than 0.2°C of global warming, improve air quality and public health, enhance agricultural productivity by preventing millions of tons of crop losses and strengthen Africa’s role in global climate leadership.
    4. Stakeholder engagement: The partnership will convene key stakeholders to advance conversations on methane abatement opportunities across the continent.

    According to the International Energy Agency Methane Tracker for 2024, the aggregate methane emissions from Africa’s Oil & Gas sector were approximately 9,200 kilotons in 2023; this equates to 67% of all energy sector methane emissions for the region. Methane poses severe health risks as high-emitting companies and processes pollute the air, often in areas where marginalised communities live and work.

    “This partnership builds on the Environmental Defense Fund’s long history of effective collaboration globally and locally and commitment to turn science into action to stabilise the climate. We look forward to working with Africa Practice to help put sound science at the heart of Africa’s energy and climate policy discourse and to focus on two immediate action areas: cutting climate-warming methane emissions from Africa’s oil and gas sector and getting its emerging hydrogen systems right,” said Mark Brownstein,  EDF Senior Vice President, Energy Transition.

    Richard Kiplagat, Managing Director of East Africa and Group Chief Commercial Officer at Africa Practice, commented on the partnership: “This MoU with the Environmental Defense Fund marks a significant step in our commitment to driving sustainable development in Africa.     The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has lauded the collaboration between SIFAX Shipping and ECU Worldwide, describing it as a venture capable of boosting the nation’s export capacity and earnings.

    Mr. Arnold Jackson, Director, State Offices Coordinating Department, NEPC said this at the 2024 edition of the International Business Conference & Expo, hosted by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with the theme “Invest Nigeria.”

    The two-day event, which was held at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, attracted key stakeholders and investors from around the globe, interested in investing in Nigeria.

    Jackson, who described the partnership as ‘laudable’, further noted that the availability of less-than-container-load (LCL) services would make Nigerian products more competitive in the global market, thereby increasing the country’s export volume and foreign exchange earnings.

    He further assured both SIFAX Shipping and ECU Worldwide that NEPC would promote the service to exporters the agency works with, in a bid to support their export ambitions as well as improve the country’s export volume.

    It would be recalled that the first LCL vessel departed the shores of Lagos for Antwerp, Belgium, on Saturday, August 2024. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first of such service in the country. 

    Commenting on the landmark event, Head of Groupage at SIFAX Shipping, Mr. Adekunle Owobamirin noted that the partnership was a product of the Group’s commitment to providing business solutions capable of positively impacting the nation’s economy.

    He added that the LCL export service will also support small-scale business owners and help them in reducing costs.

    Seplat Energy plc, foremost indigenous energy company, has reassured all stakeholders of its commitment to driving and ensuring a sustainable business and creating increased value for people and the environment.

    The company also reiterated its resolve to addressing the dual challenges of ensuring energy security and meeting climate change mitigation targets.

    The Director, New Energy, Seplat Energy, Mr. Okechukwu Mba, gave the assurance during a panel session at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigerian Council’s 47th Nigeria Annual International Conference & Exhibition (NAICE) in Lagos, themed “Energy Security: Exploring the Interplay Between Technology, Market Dynamics and Organizational Capabilities”.

    Mba, who represented Mr. Roger Brown, CEO Seplat Energy Plc, at the session, said every molecule of gas Seplat Energy produces is targeted at displacing utilizable diesel, and the company’s new gas plant developments now come with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) installations, which promote clean energy and discourages the use of biomass for cooking.

    “We are committed to ending routine gas flaring by 2025, and all projects aimed at making this a reality are on track,” Mba assured.  In a bid to end gas flaring as targeted, Seplat Energy has continued to progress efforts to secure evacuation options for unprocessed associated gas from the Sapele Flow Station. Alongside this, work has continued on the construction of the Sapele Integrated Gas Plant (SIGP), which is scheduled to be completed during H2 2024. Once operational, SIGP offtake has the potential to materially reduce Group Scope 1 emissions.

    Other ongoing key flare-out projects, including the Western Asset Flares Out (installation of VRU compressors), Sapele LPG Storage & Offloading Facility, Oben LPG Project and Ohaji Flares Out Project, are on track for completion by their respective due dates.

    The Seplat New Energy Director also referenced the company’s Tree4Life initiative, which recently saw the NEPL/Seplat Energy joint venture and the Edo State Government sign an agreement that allocates 6,000 hectares of land from Edo State protected forest reserves to enable a large-scale tree planting initiative by Seplat Energy Plc. This is in furtherance to increase forest cover and carbon sequestration efforts within the region and ensuring a sustainable environment for living.

    The efforts by Seplat Energy and other operators to drive LPG penetration in Nigeria also received commendations from the 2024 SPE NAICE participants and organisers, as the moves are expected to boost supply of LPG in Nigeria and possibly bring down prices of the commodity, thus promoting accessibility and energy security.

    Also speaking to Seplat Energy’s commitment to ensuring sustainable business partnerships, Mba said all efforts are being deployed to check any form of production deferment and downtime by ensuring strong partnerships with suppliers, who are continuously supported to succeed in delivering value to Seplat Energy and its other stakeholders.

    On the current opportunity available to Nigeria to ensure energy security, he said: “For Nigeria, it is important we use what we have (which is gas) to address the energy challenges we have and further boost energy access for our people.”

    CBN Auctions $876m To 26 Banks, Disqualifies 6

    The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has successfully auctioned $876.26 million to 26 deposit money banks (DMBs) in the latest Retail Dutch Auction System (RDAS) held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024.

    The auction was part of the apex bank’s efforts to enhance foreign exchange liquidity in the market, alleviate demand pressure, and support price discovery, in line with its objectives.

    The CBN disclosed this development in a statement released on its website on Wednesday, signed by the Director, Financial Markets Department, Omolara Omofunde Duke.

    According to the statement, the auction attracted total bids worth $1.18 billion from 32 authorised dealer banks. However, bids amounting to $313.69 million from six banks were disqualified. The disqualifications were due to four banks submitting their bids after the 3:00pm cut-off time, while two banks failed to provide bids in the required template.

    The statement read, “A total bid valued at US$1.18bn was received from 32 Authorized Dealers Banks, of which, bids valued at US$876.26m from 26 banks qualified, while bids valued at US$313.69m from six banks were disqualified.”

    It would be recalled that last week, the CBN announced plans to implement the RDAS to address the increasing unmet foreign exchange demand from end users. The aim is to ease the growing pressure in the FX market and stabilize the naira’s exchange rate, which has fluctuated between N1,450 and N1,600 in recent months.

    The Federal Government has trained fifty-six Master Trainers for the recently launched Universal Basic Education (UBE) Effective Schools Program, selected from states across the Southern part of the country, including Kwara and Kogi States. 

    The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, announced this in Ibadan during a 5-day training program for the participants. 

    He also said the program marks a significant step towards enhancing educational quality and accessibility.

    Dr. Bobboyi emphasized that the program is part of UBEC’s broader efforts to address the dual challenges of the learning crisis and the high number of out-of-school children. 

    He said UBEC has taken steps to achieve an effective UBE programme in 111 schools, adding that there are 3 UBE Effective Schools per senatorial zones and 3 in FCT, selected as pilot for the programme. 

    He said the training of Master Trainers is one of the activities in the implementation of the ESP. 

    “From here, you will be expected to cascade the training to the teachers in the 111 schools. This is in furtherance of the Commission’s plans to promote smart education at the basic education level and lay an enduring foundation for the development of relevant technological skills to cope with the 21st Century world”, he said.

    “The Effective School Program was designed to progressively improve instructional tools and practices to maximize the potential of both educators and students within the educational system,” Dr. Bobboyi stated. 

    “This initiative introduces a new perspective and practice in learning across the 111 schools previously designated as UBEC E-learning centers.”

    The schools have been equipped with ICT equipment with alternative power supply to enable technology-supported teaching and learning.

    “To this end, the Commission has established 37 Smart Schools, one in each state and FCT, with some already operational. A Digital Resource Centre (DRC) has been built and commissioned”, he added. 

    Dr. Bobboyi said the establishment of UBE effective schools aims to provide Nigerian children with the necessary resources for improved learning outcomes and the acquisition of 21st-century skills.

    Bobboyi reaffirmed UBEC’s commitment to creating an environment conducive to providing functional basic education to Nigeria’s school-age population.

    Also speaking, the Executive Chairman, OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran highlighted that the Board under his supervision has keyed into the smart education system initiated by UBEC.

    He added that the Board is currently recruiting, with the aim to employ 7,000 primary school teachers who are digitally literate.

    Adeniran maintained that the efficient operation of the Smart schools in the State, will enhance the overall effectiveness of UBE delivery by ensuring that all educational programs meet and maintain minimum standards.

    The Director, Teachers’ Development, UBEC, Mr. Mayowa Aleshin said the UBE Effective Schools Program represents a substantial investment in Nigeria’s educational future.

    He said it aims to bridge gaps in learning and foster an environment where every child can thrive academically.

    The event was attended by UBEC Coordinating Directors, and Head Teachers of UBE Effective Schools.

    Africa has a unique opportunity to influence what the future of work looks like in these early days as large language learning models (LLMs) are evolving, and the environment for applications is still new. This is according to the AI and the Future of Work in Africa whitepaper produced by Microsoft and a collective of industry experts from across the continent.

    Nearly one billion people in Africa are currently under the age of 35, with the continent projected to be home to almost half of the world’s youth population by the turn of the century, in effect making up half of the potential global workforce of the future. Currently, up to 12 million young Africans enter the labour market annually, but according to a report from the International Labour Organisation, more than 20% are neither in employment, education nor training.

    “We see a significant role for generative AI to not only transform work environments, but also foster opportunities for the youth to create jobs, innovate and help drive economic growth and stability across the continent,” says Ravi Bhat, Chief Technology and Solutions Officer at Microsoft Africa.

    According to the whitepaper, many expect generative AI to drastically change knowledge worker jobs, especially in terms of the type of work done, the skills required, and the outputs produced. McKinsey research shows that generative AI (GenAI) could enable labour productivity growth of up to 0.6% annually through 2040, depending on the rate of technology adoption and the redeployment of worker time into other activities.

    “Generative AI has significant potential to advance human capabilities,” says Jacki O’Neill, Director at Microsoft Research Africa. “As more people across Africa get access to GenAI tools through their internet-enabled devices and more affordable data, the barriers to access are being reduced and opportunities for skilling can increase.”

    “But it is not only information workers that stand to benefit from GenAI.”

    The promise of GenAI to transform industries such as agriculture, healthcare, and services must be balanced by equipping the youth with the skills needed for an AI-disrupted labour market to ensure that they are not left behind in this technological shift.

    It is therefore important to build skills across the spectrum, from how to deploy and use GenAI tools effectively at work, to how to build appropriate and innovative applications and technologies on top of these models, to the post-graduate skills of research and innovation in machine learning, natural language processing, human-computer interaction, cybersecurity, and systems to name a few.

    “Investing in this range of skills gives Africans the best opportunity to create dignified, appropriate jobs, to adapt AI sensitively to indigenous knowledge, to create new value chains, and better AI systems which might reflect for example human-centred and community values. Such systems would add value globally and could counter typical tech-centric models of automation and deskilling,” adds O’Neill.

    With culturally and linguistically sensitive design, GenAI can become more tailored to individual workers, learning from interactions and becoming a personalised tool that respects privacy and enhances each worker’s unique skills. It can serve as a guide to foster inclusivity and showcase the diverse skills and abilities of African workers. GenAI can also be appropriated as a community-focused tool that supports collaborative work and communal development.

    The technology can assist in decision-making, risk assessment, and data analysis, empowering entrepreneurs in their ventures. For the informal sector, tailored GenAI tools will elevate the capabilities of entrepreneurs, providing customised assistance for their unique needs.

    According to the whitepaper, ensuring a beneficial outcome with GenAI involves proactive governance, inclusive design, investment in education, and a commitment to regulatory and ethical standards. This is a collective responsibility, requiring engagement from policymakers, technologists, and citizens alike.

    “Technology alone cannot solve the challenges that our youthful continent faces. We need to create policies and practices to ensure that GenAI, and AI in general, is deployed responsibly and that AI-related labour is valued and dignified. It requires the macro-economic, labour, and regulatory markets to adapt and be capable of supporting positive change,” adds Bhat.

    The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) Nigeria Chapter, has signed a partnership with Balmoral Group to provide strategic capacity building towards setting global standard for facility management in the hospitality industry.

    The historic ceremony, held in Lagos, is the first of its kind within the hospitality industry in Nigeria and marks the beginning of stronger institutions compliant with international best practices across the country’s hospitality industry.

    World Environment Day: Airtel Promotes Plastic Reduction at Employee Session

    Leading telecommunications network, Airtel Nigeria marked World Environment Day by hosting an insightful session aimed at educating employees on the practice of tackling plastic pollution. The event was held on Tuesday, 4th May, 2024, at Airtel Head office, Banana Island, Lagos.

    Chief Executive Officer at Airtel Nigeria, Carl Cruz, represented by Director, Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, stated in his introductory remark that Airtel believes in leading by example, and has taken deliberate measures to ensure that the organization promotes a healthy environment.  

     “In line with this year’s global theme of “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience”, we are drilling down to focus on plastic reduction, waste disposal, and recycling, which are critical to achieving the goals being set by the global theme. These are not just environmental issues; they are pressing challenges that require immediate attention. By reducing our plastic usage, managing waste efficiently, and embracing recycling, we can significantly lessen our environmental problems,” he remarked.

    Environmental scientist and advocate, Dr. Eugene Itua, who served as the facilitator at the event, shared insights on the pertinent strategies to adopt in combating plastic pollution. His presentation covered a wide range of topics, ranging from the history of plastic use, the detrimental effects of plastic pollution on the environment and human health, and potential solutions to mitigate the pressing issue of plastic pollution.

    “As the population grows, so does plastic waste. Since the 1950s, plastic use has become a norm, leading to the pervasive issue of micro plastics. These tiny particles, resulting from the degradation of plastic bottles left in the sun, enter our bodies through the food, water, and drinks we consume, thereby posing threats to our health,” he said.

    Dr. Eugene further stressed the urgent need to take a paradigm shift from the traditional “take, use, and dispose” approach to a more sustainable “reuse, recycle, reorient and diversify” principle, embodying the circular economy.

    He concluded by urging Airtel employees to take proactive steps to prevent plastic pollution and safeguard the environment. In his words “To tackle the challenge of plastic pollution, we must adopt practices such as recycling and reusing. Without action, the average flow of plastics into the ocean is projected to triple by 2040.”

    According to Airtel, several other activities have been put in place to encourage plastic reduction and proper waste management. These activities include strengthening of policies to ensure responsible plastic use within the company, organizing of clean-up initiatives and educational seminars, internal sensitization on reusable alternatives and responsible disposal of plastic items, and utilization of social media and SMS campaigns to educate customers about plastic waste management.

    The world environment day event reflects Airtel Nigeria’s dedication to fostering environmental awareness and sustainability within its corporate culture and the broader community. In line with this commitment to the broader community, the organization is set to commission a facility newly constructed for the Green Fingers Foundation, a Non-Governmental organization dedicated to environmental protection and wildlife conservation.

    Seplat Energy Plc has emerged winner of the Best in Sustainability Reporting Award at the maiden Corporate Reporting Award, organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and NGX Regulation Ltd (NGX RegCo).

    The recognition was announced at the ICAN/NGX RegCo Awards ceremony held in Lagos. It was a platform to recognise the top 30 most capitalised companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Ltd (NGX) for the 2022 financial reporting year.

    The awards underscored ICAN and NGX RegCo’s shared commitment to fostering transparency, accountability, and international best practices within the private sector. The evaluation criteria included financial reporting, corporate governance, and sustainability reporting.

    Speaking at the ceremony, the president of ICAN, Dr. Innocent Okwuosa, lauded NGX RegCo for ensuring better disclosures and reporting among listed companies.

    Okwuosa noted that corporate reporting over time had evolved, as there was a shift from a primary focus on financial reporting to the increasing request to incorporate social and environmental disclosures. He stated that the latter had evolved and had been differently propagated, including but not limited to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosures and late sustainability disclosures.

    The ICAN boss explained that good corporate reporting must reflect the best elements of corporate governance, financial reporting, and sustainability reporting, adding that the maiden edition of the award is limited to 30 companies listed on the NGX for ease of administration but will be extended to all the listed companies in the future.

    The CEO of NGX RegCo, Mr. Olufemi Shobanjo, in his address said that transparency is one of the key drivers of any economy. Shobanjo stated that transparency ensures full disclosure of information by entities and that such information is easily accessible to members of the public to make informed decisions.

    The award was received by the CFO-Designate, Seplat Energy Plc, Mrs. Eleanor Adaralegbe, and the Director, External Affairs & Social Performance, Mrs. Chioma Afe.

    AfDB partners Stockholm International Peace Research Institute to advance evidence-based conflict prevention and resilience building in Africa

    On the sidelines of the 2024 Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development, the African Development Bank and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to further advance their collaboration.

    The agreement builds on the existing cooperation between both organizations and underlines their joint commitment to deepen the understanding of drivers of fragility and insecurity, and to promote actions that prevent conflicts and build resilience in Africa.

    Speaking on the partnership, Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade, African Development Bank Vice President, Regional Development, Integration and Business Delivery noted: “Our MoU with SIPRI reflects the Bank’s continued strong commitment to enhance its operational effectiveness in fragile settings. We aim to build resilience at scale on the continent and advance the prevention agenda through innovative partnerships across the humanitarian-development-peace (HDP) nexus. This is in line with the Bank’s new Ten-Year Strategy as well as the Strategy for Addressing Fragility and Building Resilience in Africa.”

    This innovative partnership between the Bank and the globally recognized research institute will pursue the following objectives:

    • Knowledge and capacity building – Deepen knowledge and understanding of the drivers of fragility, conflict and resilience; channel such knowledge, including of best practices and innovations, into policy dialogues and capacity enhancement for the Bank, African member countries and other humanitarian, development, and peace actors.
    • Operational effectiveness- Enhance the Bank’s programming and project design in fragile contexts and conflict-affected states by strengthening the evidence base of the Bank’s interventions— this includes the Bank’s projects and programs on climate-related peace and security risks.
    • Partnerships and resource mobilization- Expand and deepen existing partnerships in line with the strategic objectives of the Bank and SIPRI; mobilize resources through collaboration, including at important international forums. The joint knowledge products and related findings can also support resource mobilization for AfDB’s programming.

    Accordingly, the partnership framework over the next 5 years will cover research, data, analysis and capacity development; policy and development effectiveness; and partnerships and resource mobilization.

    Dan Smith, Director of SIPRI said: “With this new MoU, we will be leveraging our respective expertise and resources to contribute to system-wide approaches to tackle the interconnected issues of fragility, conflict, and climate change.” He continued: “By deepening the understanding of the drivers of conflict and insecurity, and the opportunities for sustainable peace, the partnership aims to enhance the policies, programs and interventions of the Bank and its partners, which will benefit some of the most vulnerable communities across the continent”.

    Yero Baldeh, Director, Transition States Coordination Office at the African Development Bank stated: “With regards to the specific outcomes and results expected throughout the MoU duration, these will be captured in an evolving Partnership Workplan guiding the envisioned implementation. The partnership will strengthen the knowledge base, build capacities, inform policy dialogues and mobilize resources.”

    The ceremony was prepared by the designated partnership focal points from both organizations, including  Sepideh Soltaninia, Head of the Director’s Office & Partnerships Manager at SIPRI, Frederik Teufel, Lead Coordinator and Jerome Berndt, Principal Fragility and Resilience Officer of the Transition States Coordination Office at the African Development Bank.

    Oyo Distributes Farm Inputs To Farmers In Kajola, Saki West, Oorelope, 3 Other LGAs

    The Oyo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye, on Monday, supervised the distribution of farm inputs and agricultural assets to farmers in Six local government areas of Oyo State.

    The flag-off of the distribution in the six LGAs is part of the ongoing Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery programme (SAfER) by the government.

    The Commissioner said the Oyo State government is committed to enhancing quality and increased farm produce, in order to boost food security in Oyo State.

    Unveiling the distribution at Saki West Local Government, the Commissioner, and Chairman, Food Security under SAfER, Barr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye said the 4th phase of the farm inputs distribution was officially flagged off at Ibarapa East, Eruwa where about 2537 farmers across Ibarapa zones benefited. 

    He said the distribution is ongoing simultaneously at the six local Governments in Oke Ogun which include ATISBO, Saki West, Oorelope, Kajola, Iwajowa and Itesiwaju.

    Speaking through the Director, Regulation and Enforcement, Mr. Olusegun Ezekiel, Barr. Oladunkanmi noted that the move was part of the state government plan to cushion the effect of subsidy removal, adding that beneficiaries would go home with herbicides, snap-sack sprayer tank, 16kg hybrid maize seedlings, insecticide and 20 bundles of improved cassava stems.

    According to him, about 766 arable farmers would been given inputs in the six local governments in Oke Ogun. 

    The Commissioner equally revealed that the fifth phase of the SAfER scheme in the food sector, including free vaccination for cattles, distribution of feed to goat and sheep farmers as well as subsidy on the use of tractors for farmers will commence in the next few weeks.

    In their separate remarks, the Baale Agbe ATISBO and Oorelope, Mr. Daniel Oketola and Mr. Oladunni Isaiah commended the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde for bringing succour to farmers in the State.

    While the farmer-heads noted that the distribution was timely, they urged farmers to make judicious use of the inputs.
