    Lafarge Africa Renovates Christian Pelamourges Memorial Baptist Day Nursery and Primary School, Agbesi in Ogun State

    As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, Lafarge Africa Plc, a member of the Huaxin Group, a leading Nigerian building solutions company, has reaffirmed its commitment to quality education and community development through the remodeling and upgrading of Christian Pelamourges Memorial Baptist Day Nursery and Primary School, Agbesi, Ewekoro, Ogun State.

    The comprehensive renovation encompassed the refurbishment of five blocks of classroom, extension of the Head Teacher’s office, and the construction of new dining and toilet facilities. It also included significant structural improvements such as new roofing, electrical and plumbing works, plastering, tiling, and painting across the classroom blocks. In addition, new furnishings, desks, chairs, a football field, library shelves, and dining tables were also provided to enhance comfort and functionality, a fully functional playground and football field for pupils and staff alike.

    Speaking on the project, the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Lafarge Africa Plc, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, said that the initiative reflects the company’s dedication to advancing education as a key driver of sustainable development.

    “At Lafarge Africa, we believe that quality education is one of the most powerful tools for building the future of children. Through projects like the Christian Pelamourges Memorial Baptist Day Nursery and Primary School, Agbesi renovation, we are not only improving infrastructure but also empowering young minds and creating an environment where learning can truly thrive. This investment demonstrates our commitment to strengthening the social fabric of our host communities and ensuring that no child is left behind,” Alade-Akinyemi said.

    Also speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Ogun State, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, said the renovation aligned with the state’s school facility rehabilitation programme. 

    “Ogun State government under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun is intentional about education by deliberately and scientifically rehabilitating the state education facilities. We cannot do this alone and that is where the private sector comes in. We appreciate Lafarge for this global standard facility which aligns with the state’s rehabilitation pillars. The company has again demonstrated its commitment to giving back to its community. I encourage you to do more so that the impact can be felt more. I also assure you that this facility will be properly maintained,” Arigbabu said.

    The Chairman, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Evangelist Joshua Ifede, commended Lafarge Africa for its partnership and community development aimed at securing the future of our children.

    Expressing gratitude on behalf of the SUBEB, he said: “SUBEB expresses profound appreciation to Lafarge for this investment. You have shown that corporate social responsibility can indeed be a noble assignment. This is a global standard upgrade that will enhance the teaching process, promote engagement among the pupils and motivate the teachers”.

    The Head Teacher, Christian Pelamourges Memorial Baptist Day Nursery and Primary School, Agbesi, Mrs Ayoola Oluwaseunayo, expressed appreciation to Lafarge Africa for the transformation, describing it as a life-changing intervention that will impact generations of learners.

    To show appreciation to Lafarge Africa for providing a suitable environment to promote their learning and development, the elated students presented a beautiful song that they had composed for the company.

    During the ceremony Lafarge Africa Plc also donated 2,000 copies of Mathematics textbooks to the Ogun State government to support the preparation of students for their Senior School Certificate Examination.

    Nestlé Prepares Children for a Healthier Future

    Nestlé Nigeria is helping children learn good nutrition habits for a healthier future through the Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK) program. 60 children across the 30 N4HK schools participated in the Nutrition Quiz Competition designed to help them imbibe the new lifestyle habits they learned in-class. 

    Now in its fourth season, the Nutrition Quiz competition organized in collaboration with the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, assesses the children’s knowledge on healthy nutrition, healthy hydration and an active lifestyle while enhancing recall and retention of in-class lessons under the Nestlé for Healthier Kids initiative. 

    Twenty schools from the three senatorial districts competed for the first prize in Ogun State, with Sokoya Memorial Wesley School Sagamu, emerging the winner. UBE Primary School Pasali, Abuja took home the first prize among the ten schools from the six area councils who competed in the FCT. 

    The winners were rewarded with exciting prizes, including sports gear for the teams, computers and sporting equipment for their schools. 

    Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Nestlé Nigeria, Mrs. Victoria Uwadoka said, “The Nutrition Quiz competition helps us to evaluate the impact of the lessons on the children, as it deepens their retention of the in-class lessons. As always, the performance of the children is impressive. I commend the educators who teach them the lessons and help them to retain the lessons through demonstrations and other fun exercises. I would also like to recognize the contributions of our program partners including the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health, FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) and, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), for their continued commitment to raising a healthier generation. 

    Major Edith Nwachinemerem (Rtd), Chairman, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, FCT Chapter, also commended the impact of N4HK, “The Nutrition Society of Nigeria appreciates the partnership with Nestlé Nigeria to address the need for nutrition education in early life. The Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK) program helps to establish a good foundation for healthy eating habits and provides nutritional knowledge that a child can apply throughout life. I am delighted with the children’s performance through the various stages of the competition and applaud the winning schools for a job well done.”

    The contestants and teachers of the winning schools expressed their excitement. Khadijat Ibrahim represented Sokoya Memorial Wesley School Sagamu in the Ogun State finals. She is a primary five pupil.  “I am so excited at winning the first position in this competition as I put a lot of effort into preparing for it. I want to thank God, my parents and teachers. I am so happy that I have made them proud. I really enjoyed the N4HK lessons, particularly on good nutrition and healthy lifestyles”.

    For Khadijat’s teacher, Ganiyat Odulele, winning the first prize was an ambition achieved. “After last year’s competition, I determined that children from my school, Sokoya Memorial, will come out tops this year. This win has made the months of preparation for the competition worth it. The N4HK program has not only been beneficial to the children but also to us the teachers. The annual teachers training has equipped us with relevant healthy lifestyle information that we also implement in our homes.”

    Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK) is a global flagship initiative which aims to help 50 million children globally lead healthier lives by 2030 as the company continues to make progress on its commitment to unlocking the power of food to enhance the quality of life for everyone today and for future generations.  

    The school-based program in Nigeria supports the company’s commitment by raising awareness of the benefits of healthy nutrition and an active lifestyle. Over 8,000 primary five children in the beneficiary public schools are reached annually through the Nestlé for Healthier Kids program.

    With technology rapidly evolving and the rising need to upscale educational models to effectively reawaken the long search for transformative education, built on the tripod of digitalization, education financing, and the future of work, the Learning, Education, and Training (LET) Group of the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) in Partnership with EduFirst.ng hosted the Fourth African EduTech Conference themed “Africa’s EduTech Model: Reshaping you for the Future” to advocate this concern.

    Recounting the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the learning population, the President and Chairman of the Council, NBCC – Bisi Adeyemi, stated that “this unexpected global event caused a huge shift in the way Africans access learning tools as the majority of schools had to adapt to the learning-from-home education model, which makes the topic, Africa’s Edutech Model: Reshaping You For The Future, a timely discourse.”

    She expressed her confidence that “this eminent assembly of subject matter experts will provide diverse and illuminating perspectives which would open our minds to the tremendous opportunities for growth and development in the education sector”

    In her keynote address, Celine Lafoucriere, Chief, UNICEF Lagos Office, noted that “Education has faced significant difficulties around the world and even before COVID…” The future lies in educators’ professional growth and capacity-building efforts that promote in-person, online, and digital learning.

    The Conference hosted panelists such as; Prof. Ismail Adedigba – Director, Research and Development, Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC; Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, Chairman, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB); Oluwafemi Apena,
    Country Director, UNICAF; Foluso Gbadamosi, Executive Director, Junior Achievement Nigeria; Mohammed Mahmoud, Technical Assistant to the Minister of Education, Fed. Min. of Education; Chizor Malize, MD/CEO, Financial Institutions Training Centre, FITC; Tim Akano, CEO, New Horizon; Julios Ilori, Founder and CEO, Learners Corner Education Hub; Adekanla Adegoke, Head, Oando Foundation; Isaac Olawole Joseph (Certified Microsoft Innovative Educator, University of Ibadan, Nigeria); Teju Abisoye, Executive Secretary, LSETF; Adewale Oyerinde, Director General, NECA; and Yetunde Abimbola Baderinwa – Lagos State Coordinator, NYSC.

    The technical exhibition by students from Queens College and Kings College in Lagos, which showcased their creative technology advancements for the benefit of humanity and provided evidence of the numerous efforts made to reshape the future of Africa, was the conference’s notable highlight.

    Seyi Adeyemi, Chairman, LET Group, NBCC, cited the numerous difficulties in catching up with industrialized nations in his introduction remarks. These difficulties are due, among other things, to the poorly managed education sector, social security problems, and cynical government policies.

    The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) endorsed the Conference, which was sponsored by UNICAF, Stanbic IBTC, YOMA, and Generation Unlimited (Gen U).

    This is a step in the right direction toward closing the continent’s educational gap as well as the start of a more developed and capable industry that is well-suited to long-term goal achievement.

    …trains 319 Fellows to teach in underserved schools

    Teach For Nigeria (TFN), a non-profit organization that is developing leaders to ensure that children in under-served communities can fulfil their potential regardless of their socio-economic background. This year, the Teach for Nigeria Fellows went through a five-week hybrid Training Institute which kicked off virtually on the 31st of July 2022. A two-week residential training at Greensprings School, Lekki Campus, Lagos, followed running from 1st August – 16th August 2022.  

    The Teach For Nigeria Fellowship is a leadership development program that equips Fellows with teaching and leadership skills to effect change in their classrooms and beyond. Every year, Teach For Nigeria recruits promising graduates, engages them through an intensive Pre-Service Training Institute, and then places them in under-served schools where they make a remarkable impact and contribute immensely to changing the trajectory of their learners.

    The guest speaker at the event, Director, Enterprise Development Center of the Pan Atlantic University, Dr. Peter Bamkole, reminded the Fellows that they were on a mission. “When you do what you do with your whole heart,and you can do it for free and you’re still happy, that is not work, that’s a mission,” he said. In addition, Dr. Peter stated that the Fellows were the agents of change who would drive the needed change in the educational sector.

    Blessing Adeyemi, one of the Fellows, delivered a valedictory speech on behalf of the Fellows. In her remarks, she noted  “ we have not just been taught the art of teaching, but there’s been a transference of the heart of collective leadership to a shared vision.

    The Fellows were inducted formally into the Fellowship through a commitment pledge/oath led by the CEO of Teach For Nigeria, Folawe Omikunle. She encouraged Fellows to fully honour this promise that they have made to that one Nigerian child as they enter the classrooms.

    Present at the event was the Executive Chairman, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, who was represented by the Board Secretary, SUBEB, Mr. Wasiu Kuye. The Honourable Commissioner of Education, Lagos State, Folashade Adefisayo, represented by Dr. Olufunke Oyetola, Tutor General/Permanent Secretary (TGPS), Education District 3 was also in attendance.

    In her goodwill message, the Honourable Commissioner of Education, Lagos State, Folashade Adefisayo, represented by Dr. Olufunke Oyetola, Tutor General/Permanent Secretary (TGPS), Education District 3 charged the Fellows to be change agents. “As you go out today, I want to encourage you to be good ambassadors, be an agent of change because education will take Nigeria to a greater level” She said.

    “You have come, you have seen and you have reconquered. Effecting change, requires time and lasting efforts. You are set for a new journey, new experience, in a new environment which will inform a major part of your decision in life now and beyond the fellowship”  This was the goodwill message from the Executive Chairman, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, represented by the Board Secretary, SUBEB, Mr. Wasiu Kuye.
