    Canada-based Nigerian businesswoman, philanthropist, and diplomat, Olapeju Naomi Sigismund Oke, concluded her week-long birthday festivities with a luxurious party at the Ife Grand Resort on Saturday, October 5th.

    The event drew an impressive array of dignitaries and elite guests from Nigeria and around the globe, including attendees from the USA, UK, Canada, and beyond. Notable figures included the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II; legendary musician, Sir Shina Peters; and US-based Prophetess Bola Obanla, founder of the Devoted Beloved Christ Ambassadors Store House (DEBASH).

    As the Republic of Vanuatu’s Trade Commissioner to Ontario, Canada, and founder of the HopeForSure Foundation, Olapeju expressed her fulfillment at reaching the milestone of 50 years. She emphasized her renewed energy to continue serving humanity through her various initiatives in education, health, skill acquisition, and widow empowerment.

    PJ as fondly called reiterated her commitment to fostering trade and enterprise connections between Nigerian and Canadian entrepreneurs through her Africa-Canada Investment and Expo Summit (AFRICIES) outreach programmes.

    “I feel incredibly happy seeing my loved ones celebrate with me from all over the world, including Canada, USA, and the UK. I’m especially delighted to have my son join me from Canada,” she said.

    Reflecting on her journey over the past 50 years, she shared, “It has had its ups and downs. I have been an orphan for about 30 years, but God has been faithful. I am a goal getter, and God has granted me everything I desired. I am grateful for my life, the people around me, and the spirit of humanity that God has bestowed upon me.”

    She continued, “I believe in one guiding principle: we come into this life with nothing and will leave with nothing. Life is vanity, and our time here is short. We should help others as much as we can. Serving and supporting people is what completes me, and I believe we should be our brother’s keeper.”

    The ambassador expressed her optimism for life after 50, stating, “This is a new chapter, and I look forward to a greater journey of serving and doing good to the best of my abilities.”

    The festivities began with a feeding programme for the less privileged, followed by medical outreach initiatives aimed at combating cancer and addressing eye health, named the “Cancel Cancer/Jigi Abebi Olapeju” programme. These included activities at the Palace of His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

    An embodiment of grace and charm, the celebrant also launched her book titled “The World Betrayed,” sharing the occasion with secondary school students in attendance. She hosted a diverse group of dignitaries and notable personalities, including traditional rulers, government officials, industry leaders, and icons from the entertainment, fashion, and cultural sectors.

    The lavish celebration was marked by luxury, glamour, and an unforgettable ambiance. Renowned Nigerian music maestro Sir Shina Peters provided entertainment, ensuring that the celebrant and her guests were thoroughly entertained.

    Naomi Olapeju is the founder of the Hope For Sure Foundation, convener of the Glam African Fashion Festival (GAFF), and project director of African Canada Investment, which organizes AFRICIES—a prestigious business gathering that connects African businesses with Canadian investors, promoting robust trade relations and offering valuable networking and investment opportunities.

    Known for her impactful philanthropic efforts, Olapeju has made significant contributions to the lives of the less privileged in critical areas such as education, health, trade, and skills acquisition through her foundation. She is deeply dedicated to enhancing trade between Vanuatu and Canadian enterprises, as well as African businesses, through various enabling platforms, including AFRICIES and more.

    The Board of Directors of Access Holdings Plc has announced the passing of Dr. Herbert Wigwe, CFR, the Company’s founding Group Chief Executive Officer and former Group Managing Director of its flagship subsidiary, Access Bank Plc (‘the Bank’). Dr. Wigwe died alongside his wife and son on Friday, February 9, 2024, in a helicopter accident in the United States of America.

    The entire Access Family mourns the loss of Herbert, Doreen and Chizi. We extend our deep and sincere sympathies to his family and loved ones. Dr. Wigwe was a key driving force and a larger-than-life personality who brought his remarkable passion, energy, and experience to the transformation of the Access franchise since joining the Bank in 2002.

    Commenting on the passage of Dr. Wigwe, Mr. Abubakar Jimoh, Chairman of Access Holdings said:

    “The Access Family has suffered a major loss with the passing of Dr. Wigwe who was a great friend and fine gentleman. He had a prodigious intellect, admirable personal qualities, and vast business experience which he brought to bear on the Access Family and for which we owe him a debt of gratitude.

    We remain confident that the Access Group will build further on Dr. Wigwe’s legacy of growth and operational excellence.”

    Dr. Wigwe was instrumental in the growth of Access Bank, which he co-founded with his friend and business partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede. He took over as Access Bank Group CEO in 2014, focusing on the Bank’s expansion in Nigeria and Africa before taking the helm at Access Holdings in 2022. Under his leadership, Access Bank drove its African strategy to become Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest retail bank by customer base.

    Dr. Wigwe was a member of the Access Bank UK board as well as the board of the Nigerian Business Coalition Against AIDS (NiBUCAA). He has long advocated for eradicating malaria in Africa, working with the Corporate Alliance on Malaria to support this objective. He also sat on the board of the Nigerian Mortgage Refinance Company and Friends Africa and was an honorary member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Institute of Credit Administration.

    A two-time winner of the African Banker of the Year award from the African Banker Awards, Dr. Wigwe was a passionate advocate of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which form the bedrock of Access Holdings’ growth strategy.

    His academic credentials include a degree in Accounting from the University of Nigeria, an MA in Banking and Finance from the University College of North Wales (now Bangor University), and an MSc in Financial Economics from the University of London. He also completed the Harvard Business School Executive Management Program.

    Dr. Wigwe recently founded Wigwe University, Africa’s first Ivy League institution dedicated to providing a world-class education and raising the next generation of fearless leaders.

    Dr. Herbert Wigwe is a visionary leader, philanthropist, and the founder of Wigwe University. In his professional life, he is the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc (also known as “Access Corporation”), a multi-national financial services organization that offers commercial banking, lending, payment, pension, insurance, and asset management services.

Dr. Wigwe led the Coalition to support the Federal Government in mitigating the impact of the pandemic and reopening the economy. 

    Dr. Wigwe, Access Bank and UNICEF collaborate to support vulnerable children, orphans, and internationally displaced persons in the northern part of Nigeria. To raise awareness and funds, the Bank organizes and hosts annual high-profile Access Bank/UNICEF Charity Shield Polo Tournaments in Nigeria, London, and South Africa.

    In 2023, Dr. Wigwe embarked on a transformative journey by founding Wigwe University.     In alignment with its commitment to corporate social responsibility, VFD Group partnered with Narrative Landscape Press and GLG Communications to host Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s ‘Mama’s Sleeping Scarf’ at the Alliance Francaise/Mike Adenuga Centre, Ikoyi Lagos. The collaboration focused on promoting the love for reading and supporting education, reflecting VFD Group’s dedication to social impact.

    Executive Director of VFD Group, Adeniyi Adenubi, and Head of Marketing & Corporate Communications, Muyiwa Olowoporoku, led the initiative by donating copies of ‘Mama’s Sleeping Scarf’ to students from Kesham International School, among others. Additionally, the investment company facilitated the attendance of a hundred children from less privileged schools, allowing them to participate in engaging activities and a special book reading session with Chimamanda. Each child left the event with Santa’s gifts and a personally signed copy of the book, contributing to their literary journey.

    The event, aptly titled “Christmas Magic with Chimamanda,” transcended the realms of literature, combining intellectual sophistication with celebratory elements.

    Anchored by media personality Kunle Kasumu, the event welcomed esteemed guests which included the Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo; Former Minister of Solid Minerals of Nigeria, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili;  Former Governor of Anambra State and Presidential Aspirant of the Labour Party, Peter Gregory Obi; Nigerian Business Executive, Arts Enthusiast, and Philanthropist, Bella Disu, Business leader and Snr. Lecturer at Harvard Business School, Hakeem Belo-Osagie, among others.

    In a heartfelt address, Adeniyi Adenubi underscored the importance of Chimamanda’s literacy advocacy and shared personal stories of reading to his child, emphasizing the profound impact on their bond. Chimamanda, in her address, highlighted the crucial role of good grammar and reading in personal development.

    The event concluded with a Q&A session where Chimamanda provided insightful answers, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees. The proprietary investment company’s involvement showcased a holistic approach to corporate social responsibility, intertwining literature, philanthropy, and education for a meaningful societal impact.

    The Board, Management, and Staff of Nigerian Exchange Group and its subsidiaries, led by Alhaji (Dr) Umaru Kwairanga, Group Chairman, NGX Group, has paid a condolence visit to the family of late Chief Christopher Oladipo Ogunbanjo, OFR. The delegation which also featured former board members across the group and past presidents of Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), including Chief Oba Otudeko and Alhaji Aliko Dangote, visited the family on Tuesday, 17 October 2023.

    Expressing the Group’s deepest condolences to the Ogunbanjo family, Dr. Kwairanga stated that “Chief Christopher Oladipo Ogunbanjo was not just a father but a patriarch, an elder statesman, philanthropist, legal luminary and a corporate titan. He championed many initiatives in corporate law which positively impacted many companies”.

    Emirates Premium Economy surges to record 160,000 customers trading up to experience the cabin’s quiet luxury

    Customers’ preference for the recently introduced Emirates Premium Economy has surged to a record high, with over 160,000 trading up, thereby setting new industry benchmarks in Premium Economy travel.  Emirates is delightfully celebrating this banner first year of full-service operations with the highly popular cabin class, introduced in August 2022.  With strong demand momentum forecasted in the coming months, Emirates  is providing travellers more opportunities to experience its highly-acclaimed Premium Economy product which is currently available on flights to 11 cities, with the list growing to 13 cities by the end of the year, as more retrofitted aircraft with refreshed cabins roll into scheduled service.

    Since Emirates debuted its Premium Economy Class, customer response has been overwhelmingly positive with demand exceeding expectations and bookings growing month on month, demonstrating its appeal to a broad range of traveller segments who want to try out its understated luxury and meticulously elevated experience at great value. Nearly half of the customers flying in Emirates Premium Economy are solo travellers venturing off for holidays, while couples and families constitute the other half.  More than 60% of customers who booked to fly in Premium Economy in the last year were also loyal Emirates Skywards members and regular customers of the airline.

    Emirates currently flies its A380s with the latest Premium Economy cabins to London Heathrow, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Christchurch, Singapore, Los Angeles, New York JFK, Houston, San Francisco and Dubai, with flights regularly registering full seat loads in Premium Economy. The airline plans to make Premium Economy available to customers flying to/from Mumbai and Bengaluru from 29 October, and additional cities will be announced soon. Emirates currently operates 20 aircraft fitted with Premium Economy, 14 of which were retrofitted in-house by the Emirates Engineering team in Dubai over the course of the last nine months.

    Since August 2022, the airline has operated close to 4,500 flights with Premium Economy, traversing more than 36 million kilometres around the globe. On those flights, over 192,000 meals from its carefully curated menus which include the finest ingredients were served to customers who enjoyed regionally inspired, generously portioned dishes. Unique touches include indulgent desserts garnished with edible gold leaf, among other signature offerings. Premium Economy menus are updated every month to ensure a diversity of flavours and dishes, especially for well-travelled customers. Over 126,000 pieces of chocolates were served to round off meals for Premium Economy customers. Emirates also served 6,700 kilograms of mixed nuts and 8,650 litres of complimentary fresh lemon and mint juices in Premium Economy. The airline’s robust beverage selection in Premium Economy includes a global exclusive for Emirates customers, Australian sparkling wine, Chandon Vintage Brut 2016, alongside a choice of a unique white and red wine.

    The airline’s philosophy to constantly innovate and redefine service excellence through the introduction of Premium Economy has earned it numerous top placings and accolades in the cabin category at the 2023 Skytrax Awards, Business Traveller awards, Airline Ratings Excellence Awards, and 2022 Business Traveller Middle East awards.

    In May, Emirates launched a global campaign with Academy Award winning actor and philanthropist, Penelope Cruz, which also featured her enjoying the spacious seats in Premium Economy. The airline has also provided a glimpse of its Premium Economy offering through guided tours of the new cabin class to media and influencers, trade partners, airport, tourism and government officials across cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Christchurch, Singapore, New York JFK and San Francisco.

    The Premium Economy roll-out is a core component of the airline’s multi-billion-dollar retrofit programme which will see the interior upgrade on 67 Emirates A380 cabins, as well as 53 Boeing 777 cabins. By the end of the programme, over 4,000 Premium Economy seats will be installed, along with over 700 First Class suites and 5,000 Business Class seats refurbished with the latest interiors.

Henson will host the 2021 “BET AWARDS” and GRAMMY award-winning musician, critically acclaimed Golden Globe-winning and Academy Award-nominated actor Queen Latifah will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement BET Award. The “BET AWARDS” 2021 will air LIVE, Monday 28 June on BETAfrica (DStv channel 129) at 01:00 WAT.  You can also catch the repeat at 18:00 WAT on the same day.

She portrayed NASA mathematician Katherine G. Johnson in the Academy Award-nominated film HIDDEN FIGURES, as well as lent her voice to Disney’s RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET: WRECK-IT RALPH 2. In 2018, she launched the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation in honour of her late father. The organisation provides scholarships to African-American students majoring in mental health disciplines, offers mental health services to youth in urban schools, and works to lower the recidivism rates of African-American men and women. Henson, along with her best friend and foundation partner, Tracie Jade, recently co-hosted the Facebook Watch series on mental health called PEACE OF MIND WITH TARAJI, for which they received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for “Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host.”

    Additionally, the “BET AWARDS” will be honouring Queen Latifah with this year’s Lifetime Achievement BET Award. Latifah has had amazing success since her career began in Hollywood and became the first hip-hop artist to be crowned with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006. She received rave reviews, industry recognition, and accolades for her roles in feature musical CHICAGO and cable films LIFE SUPPORT and BESSIE, which she also produced. Additionally, Latifah starred in the hit comedy GIRLS TRIP and has also taken to the stage and small screen as the title character in the television musical, THE WIZ LIVE!.
