Citibank Nigeria has appointed Nneka Enwereji as its Chief Executive Officer following the retirement of Ireti Samuel-Ogbu, the bank’s first female CEO.
This makes Enwereji the second woman to lead the bank in its 40-year history in Nigeria. Her appointment has been approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Enwereji previously served as the Head of Global Network Banking for sub-Saharan Africa and Co-Head of the Global Banking unit for the Middle East and Africa. She also held the role of Executive Director in the Lenders Unit of Citibank.
With extensive experience in transaction services, risk management, and corporate and investment banking, Enwereji is expected to guide Citibank Nigeria through new regulatory challenges, including the recent increase in capitalization thresholds set by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Speaking on her appointment, Enwereji said, “I am excited about this new chapter at the helm of Citibank Nigeria Limited, working with our dedicated team to deliver the full value of Citi’s network to clients and stakeholders.”
Enwereji holds a First-Class degree in Computer Science and Economics from Obafemi Awolowo University and an MBA from Warwick Business School, UK. She has also completed executive programs at Yale and UC Berkeley.
