The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reiterated its strong commitment to accelerating Nigeria’s digital transformation and strengthening the country’s position in the global telecommunications space.
Newsconnect reports that the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, gave the assurance while speaking at the recently concluded Enugu Tech Festival, an event designed to highlight Nigeria’s growing innovation ecosystem and its push toward global digital competitiveness.
According to Maida, the festival created an important platform for industry stakeholders to exchange ideas, explore opportunities in emerging technologies and advance Nigeria’s participation in the global digital economy.
He noted that Nigeria remains well-positioned to maintain its leadership in Africa’s telecommunications sector due to evolving regulatory frameworks, consistent reforms and strategic policies that continue to encourage investment and innovation.
The NCC boss also commended Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, for championing forward-looking digital initiatives in the state, describing the efforts as well aligned with Nigeria’s broader digitalisation agenda.
Maida explained that the remarkable expansion of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry was the result of deliberate government reforms, effective regulatory structures and policies aimed at promoting healthy competition, attracting investors and safeguarding consumers.
He revealed that the NCC, in collaboration with key industry stakeholders, has begun reviewing the National Telecommunications Policy 2000 to develop a more inclusive, consumer-focused framework capable of addressing the demands of emerging technologies.
“Vision and focus are critical to building the future we desire,” Maida told participants at the event.
He recalled that about 26 years ago Nigeria had fewer than 500,000 fixed telephone lines, but today the country boasts over 179 million mobile connections, a transformation he attributed to clear policy direction, regulatory stability and sustained investment in the sector.
Maida stressed that the ongoing review of the National Telecommunications Policy is aimed at shaping the telecom industry for the next decade, ensuring that it embraces innovation while responding effectively to the fast-changing digital landscape.
“Our goal at the Nigerian Communications Commission is to ensure that the next National Telecommunications Policy defines the kind of industry we want in the coming years—one that drives innovation and adapts to the dynamics of emerging technologies,” he said.
