International Master Balogun Oluwafemi won the South West Zonal Chess Tournament blitz section over Olisa Tennyson (Junior) and Koko Obubele on tie breaks which started today 11th July, 2023.

A 12 rounds marathon with a time control of 3mins + 2secs bonus added.

The blitz tournament is a warm up event which had over 60players. The main event that is starting tomorrow 12th July, 2023 already have 170 participants ready to battle for One Million Naira as first prize. The winner also gets a ticket to play the qualifiers of National Chess Championship in order to have a chance to qualify for the most coveted National Chess Championship slated for October this year.

The South West Tournament is going to be a 9 round event and over 15 titled players are competing all over the country.

The Vice President of Nigerian Chess Federation, Prince Yinka Adewole who is also the zonal representative of the South West on the NCF board during the opening ceremony has done something fantastic in improving the standard of chess tournament in Nigeria by providing chess boards and chess clocks for all the days of the tournament.

Chess players for the first time in a long while would only stroll to the tournament venue without worrying on hoe they can borrow chess equipment to play the game.

IA Obinna Ogbonnaya, the chief arbiter with his team of arbiters are on ground as officials to ensure the smooth running of the tournament.
