Meet Senator Diri: The New Governor of Bayelsa State


The new Governor of Bayelsa State, has been sworn in. He is a lucky man who was about returning silently to the hallowed chambers before the Supreme Court declared him the winner as there was an accusation of forgery on the APC Deputy Governor- Elect which led to the sack of Mr David Lyon, the Governor-Elect.


Senator Douye Diri was born 4 June 1959. Up until today, he was the senator representing Bayelsa Central senatorial district of Bayelsa state at the Nigerian 9th National Assembly.

Asides this, Senator Diri has honed his political skills through various offices such as Member Representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma-Opokuma Federal  Constituency in the House of Representatives between 2015-2019; he also served as the Principal Executive Secretary to the Governor of  Bayelsa  State in 2013.

Prior to this time, he was the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Bayelsa  State in 2012; Member, Governing Council, University of Maiduguri 2008-2012 and Honorarable Commissioner for Youth and Sports 2006-2007 and Executive Secretary Centre for Youth Development 2000-2002.

Senator Diri has a National Certificate in Education in 1985 and  Bachelors degree in  Education Political Science which he bagged in 1990.

His deputy is Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo
