To mark World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, 2025, Renaissance Africa Energy Company, a leading energy consortium dedicated to sustainable industrialisation and social impact, has donated a state-of-the-art sensory room to The Child Foundation in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Designed to provide a safe, stimulating environment for children with autism, the sensory room will enable improved cognitive development, social interaction, and emotional regulation through interactive and therapeutic sensory experiences. The project was successfully executed by The Offshore Lab (TOL), an integrated service company specialising in project delivery, consulting, and capacity development, ensuring the facility meets long-term community needs.
The sensory room features soft walls, dynamic lighting, tactile panels, and calming visual projections, helping children manage sensory input, stay focused, and feel at ease. These elements create a structured, interactive space that supports cognitive and motor skill development. For children with autism, such spaces offer essential therapeutic benefits, fostering comfort, engagement, and learning.
As the project implementation partner, The Offshore Lab (TOL) leveraged its expertise in project management and execution to bring the vision of an inclusive, sensory-friendly space to life. This initiative aligns with TOL’s broader mission of driving innovation and developing local capacity through impactful project delivery, consulting, training, and technology. The organisation remains committed to implementing sustainable solutions that empower businesses, communities, and government institutions.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remains widely misunderstood in Nigeria and across Africa, often leading to stigma and limited access to essential support services. Many children on the spectrum lack the necessary developmental tools and safe spaces to thrive. Sensory rooms provide a structured and supportive environment that helps children regulate sensory input, develop essential skills, and improve their overall well-being.
