British Council Sets to Hold the ‘Going Global Conference 2024’ in Abuja Nigeria

The British Council is proud to announce that the 2024 edition of the highly anticipated Going Global Africa 2024 Regional Conference, themed “Building Sustainable and Relevant Tertiary Education Institutions and Systems in Africa” will be hosted in Abuja, Nigeria.

The annual event which is set to hold from the 26th to 28th November 2024 at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, will explore how international partnerships can enhance tertiary education in Africa with focus on promoting thought leadership , fostering networking opportunities, encouraging stronger partnerships, and showcasing successful educational tools and innovations.

Hosted in collaboration with the Federal Government and the Ministry of Education, this landmark event will gather influential leaders and stakeholders from across Africa and the UK to tackle the critical challenges facing tertiary education on the African continent.

The conference will bring together over 200 senior stakeholders from various sectors, including Vice-Chancellors, Senior Government Officials, Policymakers, industry leaders, funders, influential students, and graduates from both Africa and the UK, amongst others.

British Council is dedicated to promoting a network of education leaders across the continent to enhance knowledge sharing and shape the future of higher education.

For almost two decades, the Going Global conference has provided a strategic platform for international education leaders to network, share knowledge, and shape the future of higher education.

Following the success of the Asia-Pacific edition in 2022 and the UK edition in 2023, this upcoming regional conference will be dedicated to Sub-Saharan Africa, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to supporting education in the region.

Feature: How to Develop Northern Nigeria

Were I one of the presidential aspirants asked to address the Arewa Joint Committee, these would have been the proposals I would have presented on how to develop northern Nigeria

[1] I would make sure that by 2027, every one of the 19 states in Northern Nigeria generates enough revenue to at least meet its running costs

[2] Every state in northern Nigeria must be twinned with a state in the south as part of our education policy. By 2027, every northern state must match its southern twin in terms of literacy, secondary school leavers, graduates and post-graduates

[3] Every local government across northern Nigeria must have at least one technical college. We must aim for a 100% vocational skills target by 2030

[4] I will meet with the Arewa Consultative Forum regularly and press it to use its influence to facilitate the construction of five mega cattle ranches in Borno, Kano, Adamawa, Niger and Zamfara States. The aim is to make Nigeria the world’s leading leather goods producer

[5] By 2027, I will make sure every state in northern Nigeria dismantles its sharia laws. These religious restrictions are very off-putting to foreign investors and only serve to perpetuate the economic gulf between the north and south of the country. No foreign investor is keen on going to a state where its male and female staff cannot associate freely

[6] An automatic and statutory fatwah will be placed on any state governor, commissioner, or public servant across northern Nigeria who appropriates a sum of N10m or more while in office. I will maintain Sharia-like punishments for corruption offences

[7] Every state governor must attract a minimum of $1bn in Islamic finance investment a year. To facilitate this, an Arewa Sukuk Bank will be opened with its headquarters in Abuja

[8] Taraba State will be designated as Nigeria’s wildlife state. The aim is to make the state the world’s largest wildlife sanctuary that attracts as many tourist as say the Taj Mahal, the Giza Pyramid, Eiffel Tower or Niagara Falls

[9] My government will commit to developing the economies of our 19 northern states and would like our politicians to follow suit. At the moment, our politicians appear distracted by the lure of Abuja but all evidence shows that the more this happens, the more impoverished northern Nigeria becomes. Ideally we would advice placing a moratorium on northern Nigerians running for president until we bridge the economic gulf

[10] Every state across northern Nigeria must specialise in one area of economic activity, be it tourism, power generation, manufacturing, food processing, etc. The aim is to ensure northern Nigeria matches the south in terms of generated revenue by 2030

Teach For Nigeria Inducts Its 6th Cohort of Teaching Fellows

…trains 319 Fellows to teach in underserved schools

Teach For Nigeria (TFN), a non-profit organization that is developing leaders to ensure that children in under-served communities can fulfil their potential regardless of their socio-economic background. This year, the Teach for Nigeria Fellows went through a five-week hybrid Training Institute which kicked off virtually on the 31st of July 2022. A two-week residential training at Greensprings School, Lekki Campus, Lagos, followed running from 1^st August – 16^th August 2022.

The Teach For Nigeria Fellowship is a leadership development program that equips Fellows with teaching and leadership skills to effect change in their classrooms and beyond. Every year, Teach For Nigeria recruits promising graduates, engages them through an intensive Pre-Service Training Institute, and then places them in under-served schools where they make a remarkable impact and contribute immensely to changing the trajectory of their learners.

The guest speaker at the event, Director, Enterprise Development Center of the Pan Atlantic University, Dr. Peter Bamkole, reminded the Fellows that they were on a mission. “When you do what you do with your whole heart,and you can do it for free and you’re still happy, that is not work, that’s a mission,” he said. In addition, Dr. Peter stated that the Fellows were the agents of change who would drive the needed change in the educational sector.

Blessing Adeyemi, one of the Fellows, delivered a valedictory speech on behalf of the Fellows. In her remarks, she noted “ we have not just been taught the art of teaching, but there’s been a transference of the heart of collective leadership to a shared vision.

The Fellows were inducted formally into the Fellowship through a commitment pledge/oath led by the CEO of Teach For Nigeria, Folawe Omikunle. She encouraged Fellows to fully honour this promise that they have made to that one Nigerian child as they enter the classrooms.

Present at the event was the Executive Chairman, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, who was represented by the Board Secretary, SUBEB, Mr. Wasiu Kuye. The Honourable Commissioner of Education, Lagos State, Folashade Adefisayo, represented by Dr. Olufunke Oyetola, Tutor General/Permanent Secretary (TGPS), Education District 3 was also in attendance.

In her goodwill message, the Honourable Commissioner of Education, Lagos State, Folashade Adefisayo, represented by Dr. Olufunke Oyetola, Tutor General/Permanent Secretary (TGPS), Education District 3 charged the Fellows to be change agents. “As you go out today, I want to encourage you to be good ambassadors, be an agent of change because education will take Nigeria to a greater level” She said.

“You have come, you have seen and you have reconquered. Effecting change, requires time and lasting efforts. You are set for a new journey, new experience, in a new environment which will inform a major part of your decision in life now and beyond the fellowship” This was the goodwill message from the Executive Chairman, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, represented by the Board Secretary, SUBEB, Mr. Wasiu Kuye.
