    Entries commence for the 12th edition of Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition

    The Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund has announced the commencement of entries for the 12th edition of the prestigious Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition, with submissions open from Thursday, June 3, 2026, to Friday, August 7, 2026.

    The competition is a nationwide initiative aimed at identifying, recognising and rewarding outstanding secondary school teachers for their invaluable contributions to shaping the nation’s future.

    Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Secretary of the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, Uaboi Agbebaku, noted that the competition is a vital platform for celebrating teachers whose dedication, innovation, and commitment continue to transform lives and strengthen the nation’s education system.

    Agbebaku disclosed that a few organisations have indicated interest in partnering with the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund to support the competition this year. According to him, NB-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund is delighted to announce that it is opening up partnership opportunities to reputable and progressive organizations that share the initiative’s vision and mission.

    In his welcome remarks, Public Relations Officer, NB-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, Mr. Uzodinma Odenigbo, disclosed that the overall winner for the 2026 edition would receive a cash prize of ten million naira (N10,000,000.00), including a brand new Honda HR-V, a year’s supply of Maltina, and a capacity development training opportunity overseas. In addition, the winner’s school would receive an infrastructure project valued at 30 million naira (N30,000,000.00).

    “The first runner-up will receive a total sum of N5,000,000.00 (five million naira) and a trophy, while the second runner-up will receive a total of N3,000,000 (three million naira) and a trophy. All state champions will be rewarded with recognition plaques and a cash prize of N1,000,000 (one million naira) each,” Odenigbo added.

    He reaffirmed the company’s longstanding commitment to supporting education through impactful interventions that strengthen teaching and learning outcomes nationwide.

    “The Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition remains one of our flagship interventions in the education sector. Through this initiative, we continue to celebrate teachers who go beyond the classroom to inspire excellence, nurture future leaders, and contribute meaningfully to national development. At Nigerian Breweries, we believe that investing in teachers is an investment in Nigeria’s future,” he said.

    He expressed profound appreciation to all the partners, including Honda Automobile West Africa Limited, Union Bank Plc, and Air Peace, for their invaluable support in advancing the initiative.

    Delivering the keynote remarks, the guest speaker, Azeez Saheed, underscored the significant role of teachers in shaping the future of young students.

    Azeez explained that most teachers in Nigeria do not receive adequate recognition for their efforts, urging the federal government to reverse the narrative.

    Speaking during a panel session titled “How Educational Support Can Enhance Learning Outcomes for Teachers and Students” at the occasion, the Lagos State Coordinator, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Princess Adaobi Ekwuno, emphasized the need for government at all levels to invest and upgrade facilities or infrastructure in public schools.

    In his submission during the session, the Secretary, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Lagos Chapter, Gbenga Ayetoba, explained that the teaching profession had suffered neglect from governments both now and in the past, stating that there is a need to change the orientation or mentality around education in Nigeria.

    On his part, the President of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools(ANCOPPS), Lagos State, Olushola Masheyi, commended NB Plc for the initiative and noted that the teaching profession was no longer attracting the best, stating that this has been responsible for the low quality of education in the country.

    Masheyi stated that the challenges confronting teaching cannot be addressed by the government alone, urging stakeholders to explore different support structures to find a lasting solution to the myriad of problems.

    In separate submissions, representatives of the partners for the initiative commended Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund for its tireless effort in sustaining the initiative.

    The Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition was established in 2015 and funded through the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, which was set up in 1994 to facilitate an active contribution to the development of the education sector in Nigeria in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal, SDG No.4.

    Nigeria’s literary and theatrical communities are upbeat this June to honour one of Africa’s venerable culture personality, Professor Femi Osofisan, as he celebrates his 80th birthday. 

    The landmark birthday anniversary of the  distinguished playwright, critic, poet and public intellectual, work has shaped generations of artists, scholars and audiences across the world, will be commemorated with a rich programme of activities — performances, screenings and conversations  as outlined below: 
    Lagos (June 11–15, 2026) 
    Ibadan (June 17–18, 2026).

    A National Tribute to a Cultural Luminary
    The FO@80 celebrations bring together theatre practitioners, filmmakers, academics, students and admirers to honour a writer whose work has consistently interrogated power, history, justice and the human condition. The events offer a rare opportunity to revisit Osofisan’s dramatic oeuvre across stage and screen, while engaging in critical dialogue about his enduring impact.

    LAGOS PROGRAMME

    June 11–15  2026
    The Lagos celebrations will begin with a three-day stage production of Osofisan’s acclaimed play Yungba Yungba and the Dance Contest (June 11–13). Directed by Bunmi Adedina, the production will run daily at 2:00pm, with a Command Performance at 1.00pm on June 11 June at the Department of Theatre Arts, Lagos State University of Education, Ijanikin, Lagos.

    Other productions being planned for the days include No More the Wasted Breed (dir. Segun Adefila) and The Engagement (dir. Shola Adenugba)

    On June 14, events move to JK Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, Onikan, Lagos with the activities, starting with a Talk by dramatist Ben Omowafola Tomoloju, title “The Femi Osofisan I Know”. Time: 3.00pm
    Tomoloju’s Talk will be followed by the unveiling of 100 SONGS OF FEMI OSOFISAN, produced by Semoore Badejo for Concrete Studios.

    2. Roundtable: “Femi Osofisan’s Drama and the Deconstruction of the Nigerian Postcolonial State” – featuring scholars, practitioners and admirers reflecting on Femi Osofisan’s legacy. Time 4.00pm
    Speakers include: BabaAgba Tunde Kelani, filmmaker, culture advocate; Professor Mabel Evwierhoma, theatre and culture scholar, University of Abuja; Professor Akin Adesokan, culture and media scholar, Indiana University, Bloomington, USA; Professor Razinat Mohammed, writer and literary scholar, University of Abuja; Dr. Onyekaba Cornel-Best, theatre and media scholar, University of Lagos; Professor Ifure Ufford-Azorbo, theatre practitioner and scholar, University of Uyo; Israel Eboh, theatre director and former President of National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners, NANTAP. It will be moderated by Jahman Anikulapo, culture curator and communicator. 

    3. Guests will enjoy a screening of Maami, adapted for film by Tunde Kelani from Osofisan’s original work. The screening begins at 6:00pm.

    The Lagos programme concludes on June 15 with a second Roundtable at 4:00pm, that would treat the theme: Interpreting Femi Osofisan for the Stage. Speakers are: Professor Grace Adinku, Performance and Visual Arts Studies Scholar, Texas A & M University, College Station, TX, USA; Dr Teju Kareem, theatre practitioner, CEO Zmirage Multimedia Company; Dr Toyin Ogundeji, theatre practitioner, teacher, Obafemi Awolowo University; Professor Rasheedat Liman, theatre teacher and culture scholar; Mrs Joke Silva (Jacobs); veteran actress and culture entrepreneur; Segun Adefila, theatre practitioner, Chairman, Guild of Nigerian Dancers, GOND; and Makinde Adeniran, theatre director, President of National Association of Nigerian Theatre Practitioners, NANTAP. It will be moderated by Professor Tunji Azeez, theatre teacher, scholar and President of Society of Nigerian Theatre Artists, SONTA. 

    The Roundtable will be followed by screening of Cordelia, an adaptation of Osofisan’s novella of same title by BabaAgba Tunde Kelani  at 6:00pm

    Other performances being contemplated in the course of the celebration are: Femi Osofisan’s No More the Wasted Breed as adapted and directed by Segun Adefila for the Crown Troupe of Africa and Osofisan’s The Engagement directed by Shola Adenugba for the Lagos Live Theatre.

    The celebrations continue at the Staff Club, University of Ibadan, beginning on June 17 with a recorded presentation of Yungba Yungba and the Dance Contest as performed at the University of Ghana, Legon, directed by Grace Adinku. The screening starts at 2:00pm, and is followed by a Q&A.
    The Ibadan programme concludes on 18 June with a recorded performance of Farewell to a Cannibal Rage, staged at Texas A&M University and directed by Grace Adinku. The screening begins at 2:00pm, followed by a Roundtable session and Tributes.

    About Femi Osofisan: Born at Erunwon on the 16th June 1946, Femi Osofisan (aka Okinba Launko) had his secondary education at the Government College, Ibadan and then proceeded to the University of Ibadan where, after a year abroad in Dakar, Senegal, he obtained an Honours degree in French in 1966. Eight years later, after aborting his postgraduate studies in Paris, he returned to Ibadan to obtain his PhD in 1974, and then joined the faculty as Assistant Lecturer. He rose to the post of Professor in 1985, and was made Emeritus Professor in 2014 on retirement. Osofisan has published over 40 plays, five novellas, six volumes of poetry, as well as the acclaimed biography of J.P. Clark, entitled, J.P. Clark: A Voyage. A former President of the Association of Nigerian Authors [ANA], of PEN-Nigeria and the Pan African Writers Association [PAWA], Osofisan has been the recipient of several Fellowships and Awards, including the French National Order of Merit Award (1991); the University of Ibadan Faculty of Arts Distinguished Alumnus Award (2001); the Nigerian National Order of Merit Award for the Humanities (2004); and the prestigious Fonlon-Nichols Award (2005). In 2006, he became a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters. In 2016, he was the first African to be honoured with the Thalia Prize of the International Association of Theatre Critics to highlight his work in helping critics around the globe to understand new ways of seeing and appreciating the performing arts worldwide.

    Carnival Calabar Announces 31st of May for Theme Unveiling Event in Lagos

    The Carnival Calabar Commission has announced that the annual theme-unveiling event for this year’s edition of Carnival Calabar will be held on the 31st of May at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    The theme unveiling is an annual event by the Cross River State Carnival Commission to announce the theme for the year’s Carnival. The theme guides the Bands in their choreography and the presentation of the whole Carnival.

    The unveiling events allow the state to engage with stakeholders, sponsors, and the diplomatic community as part of preparations for the Annual Carnival.

    For this year’s unveiling event, His Excellency Ambassador Gautier Mignot of the European Union is expected to be the Special Guest of Honour, and His Excellency Ambassador Paulo Santos of Portugal will be the Guest of Honour.

    As part of the activities leading up to the unveiling event, the Chairman of Carnival Calabar, Dr Gabe Onah, paid a strategic visit to Multichoice Nigeria Canal + Company. He was accompanied by the Lead Marketing Consultant of Carnival Calabar, Mrs Mary Ephraim Egbas.

    The delegation was received by the Chief Executive Officer, Multichoice Nigeria Canal + Company, Ms Kemi Okunola, and the Executive Director, General Entertainment, Multichoice Nigeria, Dr Busola Tejumola.

    The delegation briefed Multichoice on plans for digital transformation and streaming to a global audience for this year’s event, as well as the official unveiling of the theme for the 21st Carnival Calabar and Festival, scheduled to hold on Sunday, 31st May at Eko Hotel in Lagos.

    Carnival Calabar is the biggest Street Dance Parade in Africa, held every December in Cross River State. It is one of the biggest tourism events in West Africa, drawing millions of visitors to Cross River every year.

    Fidelity Bank Extends Food Bank Initiative to Thousands in Surulere

    Leading financial institution Fidelity Bank Plc has reinforced its commitment to community welfare and sustainable development by distributing food packs to over 1,500 residents in Surulere, Lagos State.

    The outreach, carried out under the Bank’s Fidelity Food Bank initiative, was conducted in partnership with the Office of the Personal Assistant to the President on Constituency Affairs and the Sodiq Abiodun Ogundare (SAO) Foundation.

    Speaking during the event, Regional Bank Head, Victoria Island/Lekki, Fidelity Bank Plc, Nnamdi Edekobi, represented by the Branch Leader, Adeola Odeku Branch, Fidelity Bank Plc, Ifeyinwa Asomugha, described the initiative as a reflection of Fidelity Bank’s unwavering dedication to improving the well-being of its host communities.

    He disclosed that since inception, the initiative has distributed more than 150,000 food packs across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, positively impacting hundreds of communities nationwide.

    2026 World Facility Management Day: Built Environment Must Inspire Belonging, Responsible Citizenship — Experts

    Stakeholders in the built environment and sustainability sectors have reinforced the critical role of facility management in shaping behaviour, fostering community connection, and driving sustainable urban living at the 2026 World Facility Management Day celebration organised by the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) Nigeria Chapter held at the Alliance Française Mike Adenuga Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos state.

    The event, themed “Cultivating Belonging Through Built Environments,” brought together professionals, policymakers, sustainability advocates, and industry leaders to explore how built environments can create stronger, more inclusive, and people-centred communities.

    Delivering the keynote address, the Managing Partner of GYB Cojsults Limited, Architect Olugbenga Onabanjo, explained that built environments go beyond physical structures and must be intentionally designed to foster emotional connection, responsible behaviour, and civic consciousness.

    Onabanjo noted that cultivating belonging requires deliberate investment in community-centred infrastructure, including walkable neighbourhoods, safe public spaces, green environments, and proper maintenance culture.

    “Built environments are not just physical spaces; they are emotional and behavioural systems that shape how people think, interact, and behave. The environment sends messages every day, and when spaces are intentionally designed with safety, walkability, greenery, and proper maintenance in mind, they encourage connection, civic responsibility, and a stronger sense of belonging,” he said.

    Speaking at the event, the President, IFMA, Nigeria Chapter, Engr Sheriff Daramola, explained that facility management has evolved significantly in about three decades from informal maintenance practices into a strategic discipline that delivers measurable value across sectors including banking, healthcare, transportation, education, oil and gas, telecommunications, media, public infrastructure, and the broader built environment.

    Daramola noted that strengthening Nigeria’s facility management sector requires deliberate investment in indigenous skill development, technology adoption, renewable energy systems, professional regulation, sustainable infrastructure practices, circular economy initiatives, shared operational systems, and globally competitive standards to position the sector as a key driver of economic growth, resilience, and sustainable urban development.

    “Facility management plays a crucial role in shaping workplaces and public spaces that foster safety, inclusion, respect, and diversity. Professionalism in facility management is earned through impactful knowledge, value-driven service, process alignment, technology adoption, and sustainable best practices. As we mark World FM Day 2026, we must continue to strengthen recognition for the profession while advancing collaborations that ensure our built environments remain safe, efficient, resilient, and people-centred,” he added.

    With a sense of pride, the President spoke glowingly about the only Nigerian recognized as one of the Top Global FM Influencer, Mr Segun Adebayo, whose recognition has shown that Nigeria is shaping the future of Facility Management through innovation, leadership and measurable impact.

    In his address at the event, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, represented by the Deputy Director, Office of Drainage, Services and Water Resources, Mr Akinwumi Babatunde, noted that the environment is the structure that aids human activities. With about 22m persons in Lagos, there is a lot of pressure on the environment in the state, however, the ministry is doing everything to ensure that residents stay healthy within the policy framework. Lagos has accelerated urban green initiative, deepen underground storm water management amongst others. He charged FM professionals to deliberately factor in climate-risk and adopt green facility practice.

    In her goodwill message, the Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy to the Governor of Lagos State, Titilayo Oshodi, commended IFMA Nigeria for creating a platform that continues to unite professionals across the country while advancing discussions on inclusive and sustainable facility management practices.

    Drawing on the State’s Eco-Circulate initiative, Oshodi noted that sustainable environments can be achieved only when communities are actively connected to and take responsibility for the spaces they occupy.

    Also speaking, the Managing Director, IFMA EMEA, Laura Paeman noted that facility management professionals play a critical role in creating environments that are welcoming, respectful, and supportive of people’s wellbeing. She added that the future of facility management lies in building workplaces and communities that are human-centred, sustainable, and adaptable to evolving societal needs.

    The Lagos State Government is set to host the third edition of its flagship investment forum, ‘Invest in Lagos 3.0’, with the target to attract both local and foreign direct investment worth N4trillion. The summit is scheduled to be held from Monday, June 08 to Tuesday, June 09, 2026, at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos state, in partnership with the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC).

    The summit, which will attract experts and business leaders from the fifty-six Commonwealth nations, is conceived to position Lagos as Africa’s leading sub-national hub for capital flows, trade integration, financial innovation, and infrastructure development.

    Speaking during a press conference held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at Eko Hotel & Suites, the Co-Chair, Local Organising Committee (LOC), Invest Lagos Summit 3.0 & Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Folashade Bada Ambrose-Medebem declared that outcomes from Invest in Lagos Summit 3.0 will build on and surpass the achievements of the previous editions with greater depth, stronger global engagement, and clearer implementation pathways”.

    AMVCA 12 Celebrates African Storytelling, Talent, and Cinematic Excellence

    The 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards was held on May 9, 2026, at the Eko Hotel and Suites Convention Centre, under the evolving partnership between Canal+ and MultiChoice, bringing together the biggest names in African film, television, and entertainment for a night of celebrating cinematic excellence and storytelling across the continent.

    Hosted by Nomzamo Mbatha and Bovi, the ceremony opened with the Best Costume Design category, where Valerie Okeke won for Colors of Fire.
    Among the biggest winners of the night was My Father’s Shadow, which secured five awards including Best Movie, Best Director for Akinola Davies Jr., Best Writing Movie for Wale Davies and Akinola Davies, Best Sound Design, and Best Score/Music.

    Colors of Fire also emerged as one of the night’s standout productions, earning three awards including Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction for Ajamolaya Bunmi and Yakub Oladejo, and Best Lead Actor for Uzor Arukwe.

    Similarly, To Kill a Monkey snagged multiple wins, taking home Best Cinematography for Kabelo Thathe, Best Editing for Daniel Anyiam, and Best Supporting Actor for Bucci Franklin.

    In the acting categories, Linda Ejiofor earned two awards, winning Best Lead Actress for The Serpent’s Gift and Best Supporting Actress for The Herd.

    Other major winners included Hakeem Onilogbo (Hakeem Effect) for Best Makeup for Lisabi, while MTV Shuga Mashariki won Best Writing TV Series.

    The awards also celebrated storytelling across Africa’s indigenous language categories, with Lisabi winning Best Indigenous Language (West Africa), Leul Addis Fikir winning East Africa, Tlhaho Ya Mosadi taking Southern Africa, Our Memories, Areal Alhanin winning North Africa, and Mabanda emerging winner in Central Africa.

    In television and digital categories, Inimba secured two awards for Best Indigenous M-Net Original and Best Scripted Series, while Nigerian Idol Season 10 won Best Unscripted M-Net Original. Out and About emerged winner of Best Unscripted Series, while Leave to Live by Sophia Chisom and Emmanuel Kanaga won Best Digital Content Creator.

    The Best Documentary award went to Beyond Olympic Glory by Shedrack Salami, while Hussaini, by Josh Olaoluwa and Orire Nwani, won Best Short Film. MTN also rewarded the winners with a ₦5 million cash prize in recognition of their achievement.

    Beyond the awards, the ceremony featured memorable performances from Fave, Tiwa Savage, and BNXN, while Purp (Nigerian Idol Season 10 winner)  delivered a moving memorial performance in honour of industry figures who passed away.

    Veteran actors Sola Sobowale and Kanayo O. Kanayo received the Industry Merit Award for their contributions to the African film industry, while Uche Montana was honoured with the Trailblazer Award.

    Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu also addressed guests during the ceremony, commending Canal+ and the organisers for sustaining the platform and celebrating African creativity.

    “If you don’t win tonight, you can win next year because it is not just about winning alone. Even being nominated is a big achievement,” he said, adding that the AMVCA would continue to grow bigger with each edition.

    With its blend of entertainment, recognition, and cultural celebration, AMVCA 12 once again reinforced its position as one of Africa’s most prestigious platforms celebrating excellence in African film and television.

    Fidelity Bank Extends “Give Her Power” Initiative to Ikorodu

    Leading financial institution, Fidelity Bank Plc, has extended its flagship women empowerment programme, “Give Her Power”, to Ikorodu, Lagos State, empowering over 30 women with vocational tools to support their businesses and improve household income.

    The Ikorodu outreach, which marks the third phase of the Initiative’s nationwide rollout, saw the distribution of 12 sewing machines, 15 grinding machines among other items, to beneficiaries drawn from Ikorodu Central, Ikorodu West, and Ikorodu North Local Government Areas.

    Speaking at the event, Fidelity Bank’s Regional Bank Head, Victoria Island, Mr. Nnamdi Edekobi, who represented the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, emphasized that the “Give Her Power” initiative reflects the bank’s commitment to delivering practical and sustainable empowerment.

    “The Give Her Power initiative is intentionally designed to go beyond symbolic gestures. Our goal is to equip women with the tools and resources they need to build sustainable businesses, generate income, and create better opportunities for themselves and their families,” he said.

    Also speaking at the event, the Divisional Head, Brand and Communication, Fidelity Bank Plc, Dr. Meksley Nwagboh, described the Ikorodu outreach as a strategic intervention targeted at underserved women at the grassroots level.

    He noted that the Initiative will be expanded across other regions, including the South-East, South-South, and Northern Nigeria, reinforcing the bank’s commitment to ensuring women are not excluded from economic opportunities.

    “When women are empowered financially, the ripple effect is felt across families, communities, and the broader national economy,” he noted.

    It will be recalled that the “Give Her Power” initiative was initially launched in Lagos through strategic partnerships with organisations including LUSH Hair, Barbergirl Academy School of Barbering, Dee ‘n’ Ell the Shoe Architect, Inter-Bau Foundation, IVM Innoson, National Credit Guarantee Company (NCGC), and One Universe. The initiative is anchored on the bank’s HerFidelity Apprenticeship Programme, which provides vocational training, mentorship, business support, and access to enterprise opportunities.

    Prior to the Ikorodu activation, the initiative recently took place in Abeokuta, Ogun Staste, where 100 women received 50 sewing machines and 50 grinding machines at an event held at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena.

    The Ikorodu outreach attracted key government and community stakeholders, including the Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Prince Adedayo Ladega; Executive Chairman of Ikorodu West LCDA, Hon. Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju; and Executive Chairman of Imota LCDA, Hon. Benson Sunday Ayodele.

    One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Hassan Bukola from Ikorodu North LCDA, expressed gratitude to Fidelity Bank, describing the support as transformative.

    Lafarge Africa Plc, a leading provider of innovative and sustainable building solutions and manufacturer of a wide range of cement, readymix, mortar, and Plaster of Paris brands, has successfully upskilled 100 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through its Disability to Ability (D2A) programme.

    The event held recently at Sheba Centre, Maryland, Lagos, marked the successful completion of intensive vocational and entrepreneurial training delivered in partnership with chess icon and changemaker, Tunde Onakoya, the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, and the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA).

    The D2A Programme, themed “Ability Reimagined,” equipped participants with practical, market-relevant skills across four vocational areas: Laptop and Phone Repairs; Make-Up and Gele styling; Wig and Braids Making; and Shoe and Bag Making. The training was conducted across two hubs; Ikeja (Lagos West) and Ikorodu (Lagos East), ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for beneficiaries across the state.

    Speaking at the event, the Group Managing Director/CEO of Lafarge Africa Plc, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, explained that the initiative reinforces the company’s commitment to fostering equity, empowering vulnerable groups, and supporting inclusive economic growth across Nigeria.

    Alade-Akinyemi noted that the milestone is a significant step in advancing inclusion and economic empowerment for persons living with disabilities. According to him, equity and inclusion are not just ideas the company speaks about but principles it actively embeds in its business culture. She added that through the programme, the beneficiaries can earn a living and contribute to themselves, their families, and the broader Nigerian economy.

    Also speaking, the Director of Communications, Public Affairs & Sustainable Development, Lafarge Africa Plc, Viola Graham-Douglas, said that the D2A programme aligns with the company’s long-term sustainability and inclusive growth agenda, which prioritises empowering underserved communities through practical and scalable solutions.

    The 2025 edition of the BuildHer by Lafarge Female Tilers and Block-Laying Training Programme, a specialised empowerment initiative aimed at increasing female participation in the Nigerian construction industry, is a strong testament that with the right support, the 21st-century woman is ready to take on the world.

    Launched in 2021 as part of Lafarge Africa’s broader corporate social responsibility efforts, the initiative began in Lagos and has grown significantly while maintaining its core objective of equipping women from underserved communities with technical, entrepreneurial, and financial skills. Each participant undergoes hands-on training in tiling and block laying using Lafarge Africa’s flagship products, Supafix and Supaset.

    In addition, participants receive professional support, including automatic enrolment into the Block Makers and Tilers Association of Nigeria, providing access to a network that facilitates their entry into the workforce. Graduates are also awarded certificates and essential working tools, such as cutters and other equipment, to help kickstart their professional journey.

    The success of the programme is evident in the 2025 edition, which recorded its highest participation yet, with 100 participants across three states: Lagos, Ogun, and Cross River. This expansion builds on the achievements of previous editions held in Lagos. A notable milestone is the strengthened collaboration with government institutions, including the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, and the Cross River State Ministry of Women Affairs.

    True to its name, BuildHer reflects Lafarge Africa’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and gender equality. Beyond developing a skilled female workforce for the construction sector, the initiative empowers women to discover their potential, achieve self-reliance, and attain economic independence while breaking gender stereotypes in vocational trades. According to Viola Graham-Douglas, Director of Communications, Public Affairs & Sustainable Development (CPASD), the programme aligns with the company’s sustainability goals and long-term vision of building a better future for generations.

    At the event, participants were encouraged to strive for excellence by the Head of Sustainability and Sponsorships at Lafarge Africa Plc, Gabriel Pollyn, who commended their dedication and resilience. In Ogun State, the Director of Administration and Supply at the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Kehinde Idowu, encouraged participants to remain resilient and leverage their newly acquired skills.

    One of the trainers, Olabanjo Ganiu Babatunde, affirmed the long-term societal impact of the initiative, emphasizing that empowering women ultimately strengthens future generations. He urged participants to remain diligent and focused as they apply their skills.

    Commendations also came from Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Lagos State, who noted that the initiative aligns with the state government’s social inclusion and gender equality agenda. He also appreciated the increase in participant numbers from previous editions and reaffirmed the state’s continued support.

    Participants shared inspiring testimonials. Sandra Okolo from Lagos State described the programme as a dream come true, expressing her desire to build a career in the construction industry. Another participant, Ogedengbe Mary Damilola, who specialised in tiling, expressed her intention to establish herself as a professional tiler and mentor other women.

    While the immediate outcomes of the programme are evident, its long-term social and economic impact remains even more significant. As highlighted by Viola Graham-Douglas, empowering these women extends beyond individual success to community transformation, reinforcing the message that no profession is beyond the reach of women who are determined and resilient.

    Family cries out as Ojokoro LCDA driver goes missing

    The family of a driver with the Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ifako, Ijaye, Lagos State, Mr Akintayo Olanrewaju, has raised the alarm over his disappearance, urging authorities to intensify efforts to find him.

    Olanrewaju, who works with the council as an official driver, was last seen on Friday morning after leaving home to retrieve a faulty official vehicle from a mechanic, but has not been heard from since.

    However, several days after his disappearance, the family says there has been little progress in the search as they expressed worries over what they described as a lack of urgency from both the authorities of the LCDA and the police.

    Speaking with our correspondent, the Senior Pastor of Christ Apostolic Church, Revival Chapel, Abule-Egba, Lagos, Pastor Ben Oyebanji, who has been assisting the family, said the incident began on Thursday when the vehicle Olanrewaju drives developed a fault.

    “I learned that the official vehicle he drives developed a fault, and he contacted the office. The office then asked him to call the official mechanic,” Oyebanji said.

    “He called the mechanic on Thursday, and they came to pick up the vehicle from where the mechanic stays,” he added.

    According to the cleric, Olanrewaju informed his family on Friday morning that he was going to retrieve the vehicle from the mechanic and return it to the office, but that was the last communication anyone had with him.

    “On Friday morning, he told them at home that he was going to the mechanic to retrieve the vehicle so he could take it back to the office. That was the last time he was seen. Since then, nothing has been heard from him,” Oyebanji stated.

    He said a major concern remains whether the missing driver actually got to the mechanic’s workshop.

    “That is where the lacuna is now. We don’t even know if he got to the workshop,” he said.

    Oyebanji also faulted the response of the LCDA authorities, accusing them of not taking the necessary steps expected in such a situation.

    “The local government people are not forthcoming. They are the ones who are supposed to go to the police station and make official complaints, but they left everything to the family,” he said.

    “We just left the police station now, and I don’t see them putting enough effort into it, even though they have the power to escalate the matter,” he added.

    The cleric said he had to personally accompany the family to the police before an action was taken.

    “They made a report earlier, but I was shocked that nothing had been done until I got there this morning. That was when they started talking about reaching out to other stations,” he said.

    Oyebanji added that the family had contacted the mechanic, who denied seeing Olanrewaju on the day he went missing.

    “The mechanic said he did not see him. He said he only called him to say he was on his way, but told him the vehicle was not ready for pick up,” he explained.

    However, the cleric said the Personal Assistant to the LCDA vice chairman claimed to have spoken with Olanrewaju that same Friday morning.

    “The PA confirmed that he spoke with him that morning. He said Olanrewaju told him he didn’t have money to go to the workshop, and he asked him to send his account number so he could transfer money. He also said that when he tried calling him again later, his number was no longer going through.

    “When we spoke to the mechanic, he said he was on his way to the police station on Tuesday morning as invited, but the Vice Chairman’s PA asked him to go back home. These conflicting accounts are why people are getting worried. What is really happening? There are too many unanswered questions,” he said.

    Irele Tower is designed to host office and retail activities in the Lekki economic corridor.     He stated that the state government will continue to collaborate with private sector players to drive sustainable urban development, create jobs, and position Lagos as a leading hub for commerce and industry in Africa.

    “The commissioning of Irele Tower is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved through strong collaboration between the public and private sectors. This development not only enhances the infrastructure profile of the Lagos Free Zone but also strengthens our vision of making Lagos a premier destination for investment and economic activities. We will continue to support initiatives that promote industrial growth, create employment opportunities, and improve the overall business environment in our state,” he said.

    In her remarks, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Lagos Free Zone, Adesuwa Ladoja, stated that the development reflects the zone’s commitment to creating an integrated ecosystem where businesses can thrive, supported by modern infrastructure, a strategic location, and efficient logistics.

    New Study Shows Clean Cooking Can Save Money and Improve Health in Nigeria

    A new international study has found that switching to clean cooking energy in Nigeria can reduce long-term household costs, improve respiratory health, and ease pressure on the healthcare system.

    The study, co-led by Davies Adeloye of Teesside University, UK, was conducted under the C2REST Nigeria Study—a three-year programme funded by the Medical Research Foundation. The research brings together experts from the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Benin, and Kenya to examine the links between climate, environment, and health in rapidly growing urban communities.

    The findings come at a critical time. As Nigeria experiences rapid urbanisation and rising energy demand, millions of households still rely on firewood, charcoal, and kerosene for cooking. These fuels contribute to harmful indoor air pollution and increase the risk of respiratory and other health conditions.

    The study was carried out in Alimosho (Lagos State) and Ado-Odo/Ota (Ogun State), two areas that reflect the realities of modern Nigeria, with fast population growth, industrial activity, and mixed-income households. This makes the findings highly relevant for many urban and peri-urban communities across the country.

    Importantly, the research shows that clean cooking should not be seen simply as a household expense, but as a long-term investment. Although cleaner energy sources such as gas and electricity may have higher upfront costs, households can save money over time through fewer illnesses, lower healthcare spending, and improved productivity.

    Speaking on the findings, Professor Adeloye emphasised that clean cooking is one of the most practical and immediate ways to improve public health while supporting economic development. He noted that the issue goes beyond environmental concerns, directly affecting household finances, disease burden, and national productivity.

    The study also highlights important inequalities. Lower-income households, larger families, and communities with limited infrastructure are less likely to adopt clean cooking solutions. This points to the need for targeted and inclusive policies to ensure that no group is left behind.

    To address these challenges, the study calls for stronger government action. This includes subsidising clean energy costs, improving supply chains, expanding access to clean fuels, and integrating clean cooking into national health and climate strategies. Collaboration between government, the private sector, and development partners will be essential to accelerate progress.

    With the right policy support, clean cooking could become one of the most cost-effective ways to tackle Nigeria’s interconnected climate, health, and economic challenges.

    The findings align with Nigeria’s climate commitments and energy transition plans, offering a practical and scalable solution to reduce emissions, improve air quality, and enhance household welfare.

    The training, aimed at empowering students with practical technology skills to help them improve their education, secure jobs, and become self-employed in the long term, covered various areas, including computer literacy, machine learning, and the use of Artificial Intelligence.

    Representatives were selected from different classes across the school, with the hope that they would be able to transfer the skills acquired to their colleagues.

    According to Mrs. Foluke Ademokun, the Executive Coordinator of the foundation, “this initiative is part of a series of efforts to address the issue of youth unemployment and skills gap in the country and it’s expected to benefit not only the students but also the community at large, as the students would be able to apply the skills acquired to improve their lives and contribute to the economic development of their communities”

    Responding on behalf of the school management, the Vice Principal of the school, Mrs Sherifat Ajala, appreciated and commended AAAF for excellent facilitation and the opportunity given to the students to interact with the best minds who facilitated at the training.

    “On behalf of the school management and all these students, I want to say a big thank you to Ajoke Ayisat Afolabi Foundation and their sponsor, the SIFAX Group for the good works that they have done in the lives of our students and for the wonderful gift. May the Lord Almighty continue to bless you”, she said.

    Goodluck Innocent and Moses Faith, two of the students who participated in the training were rewarded for good class participation and thereafter expressed gratitude on behalf of their colleagues to AAAF and SIFAX Group for providing them with the opportunity to acquire skills that would enhance their future employability.

    At the end of the training session, the school was presented with the gift of a projector, laptop and projector screen as it is always done in the previous schools where similar programmes have been organised.

    Other schools who have benefited from previous empowerments include; Community Grammar School, Zion Pepe, Ondo state; Osolu Senior Secondary School, Badagry; Pobuna Senior Grammar School, Epe and Baptist Model College, Ile-Epo. Others are Ijaiye-Ojokoro Senior High School, Ifako-Ijaiye and Unity Senior College, Alimosho, all in Lagos state, which brings the total number of empowered students to nearly 600.

    The colourful ceremony brought together customers, transporters, and key stakeholders including the Honourable Commissioner for Housing, Lagos State, Hon Moruf Akinderu Fatai, the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs, Cross Rivers State, Hon Edema Irom, members of the Board of Lafarge Africa Plc – Mrs. Adenike Ogunlesi, Mrs. Olusola Oworu and Mrs. Elenda Osima-Dokubo, and management and staff of the company, to honour exceptional performance and reinforce the strong partnerships that continue to drive the company’s growth across Nigeria.

    The annual awards ceremony, regarded as the apex of Lafarge Africa’s commercial success, recognizes the invaluable contributions of customers and transporters who ensure the company’s products reach every part of the country. The 2025 edition celebrated partners whose dedication, integrity, and resilience have strengthened the company’s market leadership despite evolving economic realities.

    Elder Ubong Bassey Obot of Ubotex Nigeria Limited emerged the National Volume Champion. Igwe Cosmas Ezeumeh Chizoba of C.C. Umeh and Sons Limited and Chief Etim Effiong Okon of Batoframoje Enterprises secured the titles of first and second runners-up, respectively. As the champion, Ubong Obot received a 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser. C.C. Umeh and Sons Limited and Batoframoje Enterprises were awarded a 2026 Toyota Prado and a 2026 Toyota Fortuner, respectively.

    Additionally, B.I.G MultiQuest Nigeria Limited was recognized as the National Winner- Best Transporter category and was awarded a 2026 Toyota Hilux.  Two customers who emerged as National Growth Champions received 15KVA Generating Sets, while 4 regional champions were rewarded with a Toyota RAV4 each. Other winners received prizes including a Changan CS55, GAC S3, Hyundai Creta cars, 13KVA solar inverters, 80-inch Hisense TVs, and deep freezers, among others.

    Welcoming guests to the event, the Group Managing Director/CEO, Lafarge Africa Plc, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, expressed deep appreciation to the partners for their loyalty and commitment to the business.

    Lolu Alade-Akinyemi noted that Lafarge Africa’s growth story would be incomplete without its partners’ market insights, trust, and consistent support. According to him, the awards serve as both recognition and motivation, encouraging partners to continue raising the bar.
