    Sanwo-Olu bans VIOs from Operating in the Early Hours of the day

    Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday banned the state’s Vehicle Inspection Officers, VIOs, from operating during the morning period.

    The move is to curb traffic gridlock experienced during peak periods. It is believed that VIOs contribute to the gridlock as they normally stop vehicles during peak periods to demand for vehicle documents and made arrest.

    The governor, who addressed newsmen after presiding over the Security Council Meeting at the State House, Ikeja said VIOs would now operate on the road for only three hours.

    According to him, the officers would now operate between 12.00pm and 3.00pm.

    “We are going to restrict the operation of the men of the VIO to off peak period between the hours of 12 mid-day to 3p.m,” he said.

    In furtherance of the recently declared Zero-Tolerance on illegal building construction and building collapse, the Lagos State Government has sealed sites where unapproved building constructions were going on in some parts of the State, particularly Lekki, Abule-Ado and Festac extension.

    Speaking during the monitoring exercise in Lekki, Abule-Ado and Festac at the weekend to assess the level of compliance to building regulations in these areas, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako said that the Lagos State Government was determined to control physical development across the State, particularly in the FESTAC extension, Abule-Ado and other parts of the State where haphazard developments were going on.

    Shocked at the level of development activities going on without planning permit and adherence to the State planning laws in Festac extension and Abule-Ado, where the monitoring team discovered that many houses had tilted at various degrees while some were sinking into the ground, the Commissioner directed the immediate sealing of sites without planning permits by operatives of the Lagos State Building Control Agency(LASBCA) and the Technical Services Department of the Ministry.

    He maintained that obtaining building permit before commencing construction was not negotiable as the administration of Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu was determined to bequeath a Lagos Megacity that is sustainable, orderly, livable and friendly to business and tourism.

    He explained that owners of the sealed properties who were willing to conform to planning laws and regulations would be encouraged to regularise their properties, while Government would continue to apply the law on recalcitrant ones.

    ” For the avoidance of doubt, no building is allowed to be developed in Lagos State without first obtaining planning permit and stage certification. Upon construction, such buildings must conform with the approval granted by the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority(LASPPPA)” he said.

    He emphasised that the era of unplanned developments in which anyone could erect buildings without approved building plan and according to their fancy was over.

    He urged all property owners, developers and other stakeholders in the built environment to ensure that they obtain planning permit and produce it when demanded by officials of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and its Agencies, adding that non-availability of the permit would lead to the sealing of the affected property while its promoters would be made to face the law.

    The Commissioner also enjoined property owners and all concerned to desist from breaking government seal on identified illegal building construction, working in sites where government seals had been broken or using of under-aged children as site workers.

    He urged Lagosians to cooperate with the State Government in its aim of achieving safe, livable and secure physical environment by not only obtaining planning permits but ensuring conformity with their approved plans.

    The monitoring exercise in Festac extension and Abule-Ado was carried out by the Physical Planning and Urban Development Commissioner in the company of Mrs. Aisha Onotu, a representative of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and other staff of the Federal agency.

    At this time that the need for healthy living has come to the front burner of many people in Lagos, a serious blow has come on people as the Fruit Market located at Ikosi Ketu has been brought down.

    Many people are in awe seeing the ruins of the Fruit Market, we have been hit below the belt age  again but as typical of Nigerians, we will shortly get over it. However, it is many steps behind in the quest for healthy living.

    The Fruit Market is the hub of fresh fruit purchase in Lagos. Many fruit sellers across the state come to the market to make purchases on daily basis. The market is quite easy to locate and trucks bringing in fruits to Lagos can easily offload and return to the hinterland.

    It will interest you to know that the prices in the fruit market is almost the same bought in the hinterland. This has even made people coming from other states to buy these perishables with ease at this market. I am not sure this was put into consideration while carrying out the demolition.

    Equally, what was the location plan for the market women? Where would the hundreds of sellers meet their buyers? It is unbelievable that every evening, touts are seen extorting money from hawkers and those engaged in street trading. Definitely, the street cannot occupy these women and they are turned into desolates.

    This market made me know that there are people who are passionate about doing business. I met a fairly old Ijesa woman who sells banana in the market, you would never had thought she could express herself in English until a day when she said, “I attended Adeyemi College of Education. I was once a school teacher.” She had built a house from the proceeds made from this market. How many persons have sent to early grave of  irrelevance.

    When various markets of this nature are brought down for reconstruction, it has been observed that these markets are overpriced and it will no more be affordable to the people at the lower rung of the society. It gets so pricey that the structures will be left empty, a good example is Tejuosho modern market which has joined the growing list of unoccupied buildings in Lagos.

    The rising tide of insecurity just got a boost with this step because children who depend on this market for livelihood might take to crime. Unfortunately, there were many jobless young people who depended on the market. They have just been further disparsed into the society.

    There are various pros and cons to the demolition of an existing facility as such, Lagos aims to achieve a megacity status but everyone in the city needs to be carried along, if not, the damage would outweigh the glamour.

    For people who grew in the marketplace, they will understand the psychology of people from that habitation. The damage done to the fruit market goes beyond the intended beauty that is envisaged. Electorates cannot be suffering with every new administration. Let’s plan right per time because healthy living will nosedive, legitimate business would be affected, prices of fruits will rise and other humans will become prey of this action. The stakeholders need to assure us that when the ultramodern complex is built, it would still be affordable to house fruits from across the country.

    The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has appointed Mrs. Olubunmi Fabamwo as the Chairman, Civil Service Commission, just as Messrs. Adeshina Mohammed Odeyemi and Kamal Olorunoje were also named as members.

    The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Civil Service Commission, Mrs. Kikelomo Sanyaolu, while receiving the appointees, assured the Chairman that the new members will get the full cooperation and support of staffers through rededication towards achieving the set goals and objectives of the Commission.

    Responding, the Chairman, Mrs. Olubunmi Fabamwo promised to improve on the achievements of her predecessor, imploring staff to remain diligent in the discharge of their duties in order to deliver on the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda of the present administration.

    “Lagos State deserves not only the best but also expect the best from her workers. I, therefore, implore you to remain dedicated, diligent and focused on your responsibilities so as to support the Governor in fulfilling his campaign promises to the citizens of Lagos State”, she said.

    Lagos Primary School teacher to use tablets as teaching aids- Hamzat

    Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, on Thursday said that the state government has approved the provision of computer tablets for all primary school teachers in the state.

    Speaking at the inauguration of primary school facilities in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area, Hamzat said that the tablets would assist the teachers in effective teaching of the pupils.

    “Every teacher cannot teach with the same standard across the state, but with the tool (tablet), it allows to know your students are being taught right.” The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat said.

    “What is important for us is education and it is fundamental to the development of the state, you will also see a big increase in education budget.

    “Because if we don’t get it right from the basic level, then we have missed it. We believe that education is fundamental,” Hamzat said.

    The Chairman, Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs Olabisi Ariyo, has announced the intention of the Commission to recruit One Thousand Secondary School Teachers into the State Post Primary Teaching Service.

    She made this known in her office yesterday, stressing the commitment of the Mr Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, to ensure that the standard of secondary school education in the State is in tandem with the 21st century global educational standard.

    She thereby invited all interested and qualified Nigerians who are resident in Lagos to visit the TESCOM recruitment Portal, @tescomjobs.lagosstate.gov.ng for full detail of application procedures.

    The portal, according to her will be opened from Wednesday 13th to Wednesday 20th of November 2019, adding that this is an opportunity for all interested qualified Teachers who are residents of Lagos State to apply accordingly.

    Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele joins Body of Benchers

    The Senator representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters has been appointed as a Member of the prestigious Body of Benchers in Nigeria.

    The Nigerian Body of Benchers is a professional body concerned with the admission of prospective students into the Nigerian Law School. The body also regulates the call of graduates of Law School to the Nigerian Bar as well as the regulation of the legal profession in Nigeria.

    In a letter addressed to him by the Body of Benchers, Nigeria, dated Monday, 28th October, 2019, the body acknowledged the fact that Sen. Bamidele has paid his dues as a seasoned legal practitioner and staunch advocate of the Rule of Law in Nigeria.

    According to the letter of appointment signed by the Secretary of the Body of Benchers, Mrs. H.A. Turaki, Sen. Bamidele’s appointment was ‘sequel to the resolution by the Body of Benchers that Chairmen of the National Assembly Committees on Judiciary should be made members of the Body of Benchers by virtue of office’.

    Bamidele is a New York Attorney, Member of the 7th House of Representatives and three-term Member of the prestigious Lagos State Cabinet between 2002 and 2011. He is a lawyer without border, licensed to practise in the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court; an Attorney and Counselor-at-Law of the State of New York, USA; and a Notary Public of Nigeria.

    Bamidele graduated with honours in 1986, from the University of Ife (Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife, Osun State, with a Bachelor of Arts degree and, subsequently, from the University of Benin, Edo State, Nigeria, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) Degree in 1990. After his call to the Nigerian Bar a year later, Bamidele launched into a full-time legal career in 1992.

    He obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree from the World-renowned Franklin Pierce Law Centre in the University of New Hampshire Law School, in Concord, New Hampshire, USA. He specialized in Intellectual Property Law, with bias in International Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law, including the Licensing of International Technology Transfer.

    A learned counsel of no mean stature, Bamidele is a Member of the New York Bar, a Member of the American Bar Association, a Member of the International Bar Association. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Nigeria), the Chartered Institute of Management Consultants as well as the Chartered Institute of Local Government and Public Administration, Nigeria, among others.

    It is quite refreshing that Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele’s appointment as a Member of the prestigious Body of Benchers can be described as putting a round peg in a round hole. He is a seasoned and multilateral legal practitioner, Civil Rights activist, a former Honourable Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development as well as Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy consecutively in Lagos State. He was a former Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Budget and Research in the 7th National Assembly.

    Given his long years of fledging legal practice in Nigeria and overseas, coupled with his unique wealth of experience as a seasoned politician, consummate public administrator and quintessential Federal lawmaker, Bamidele has traversed the three arms of Government in the course of his political and legal career. There is, therefore, no doubt that he would maximize his present placement as a Member of the Body of Benchers and Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, to champion several landmark reforms in legal education and in the nation’s justice sector with a view to further repositioning the Nigerian judiciary on a sound pedestal which will enable it perform its traditional duty more profoundly as the hope of the common man and custodian of the Rule of Law and social justice.

    Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated the government’s commitment to the safety of residents and visitors to the State, following the arrest of some Boko Haram suspects.

    The Governor, in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, praised the gallantry of officers of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army who foiled an attempted attack on one of the Universities in Lagos.

    Referring to the operation that led to the arrest of the Boko Haram suspects by the military operatives, the Commissioner maintained that the security apparatus of the State had strategies in place to forestall any threat to the peace that exists in Lagos.

    Omotoso assured citizens that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will continue to provide the equipment and resources that are necessary to fortify the security machinery of the State, saying “Lagos remains safe and residents should maintain peaceful co-existence with one another”.

    He appealed to Lagosians to further complement the efforts of the security agencies by being observant and always report any influx of unfamiliar people to law enforcement agencies because “security is the responsibility of all”.

    The Commissioner added that unusual movements should be reported to the Lagos State Government through its Emergency Toll-Free Lines – 767 or 112.

    In fulfilment of his inaugural promise to invest in the education of the children and young adults, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved funds for the rehabilitation of 60 public schools across the State.

    The Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo disclosed this during an interactive session at Ministry, noting that the bold vision of the Governor will herald a new vista that repositions the Education Sector in the State.

    In her words, “These Schools, 10 from each of the six Education Districts, are part of the efforts and impact-driven activities in kick-starting transformation in the Education Sector aimed at improving standard and quality of education as well as education management in Lagos State”.

    The Commissioner stressed that the commencement of rehabilitation may not take-off until all due processes, including procurement, are fully completed and strictly adhered to by all parties involved.

    According to her, this administration has resolved to introduce measures aimed at addressing three broad critical issues affecting education in the State – the need to upgrade the teaching profession, the curriculum, and school infrastructure, adding that Government will ensure all Public Schools in Lagos are made number one nationally and are able to compete globally with much-needed skills, while preparing for the jobs of tomorrow.

    In aligning the school curriculum with 21st century realities, the Commissioner hinted on leveraging technology platforms to teach, assess, test and reinforce learning in conjunction with the Private Sector and development partners, while ensuring collaboration with Industry, Federal Government and Academia in updating the school’s curriculum to reflect current and future industry needs that will positively influence and reshape the present educational system in the State.

    She enthused that the Government is desirous of promoting knowledge transfer and co-creating workable and functional models for taking education sector in Lagos to an admirable height, reiterating plans by the State Government to recruit qualified teachers for public schools.

    Lagos is ready to pay above N30,000 minimum wage- Sanwo-Olu

    Better time awaits workers in Lagos State, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu discloses, on Tuesday, that the State is ready to pay more than the N30,000 benchmark for the National Minimum Wage.

    Sanwo-Olu said the implementation of the new minimum wage payment would take off when the Federal Government and labour unions conclude their negotiations. The State, he said, was drawing up its finances and creating additional revenue sources that would enable the Government sustain the new minimum wage payment.

    The Governor made these disclosures during a meeting with Organised Labour Unions held at the State House in Alausa.

    Sanwo-Olu said his Government understood the day-by-day challenges being faced by workers in the State to do their tasks, which informed the decision by his administration to pay more than the N30,000 minimum wage benchmark.

    The addition, the Governor pointed out, was to motivate workers and encourage them to cope with challenges that may hinder their productivity.

    He said: “As a government, we take the issue of minimum wage very seriously. We know how important and germane it is to the wellbeing of our people. We are technically ready to implement the new minimum wage. I made commitment during my previous interactions with the labour unions before my assumption of office and I am still keeping to the promise made. However little it is, we will certainly pay more than N30,000 minimum wage.

    “We understand the position Lagos occupies and we understand the challenges workers are facing in Lagos. If other states can raise up to that amount, I believe Lagos needs to show a bit more to appreciate workers’ contribution to the growth of our State.”

    During interaction with the labour unions’ leaders, Sanwo-Olu listened to various demands of the workers, which included arrears of workers’ medical allowance, introduction of premium insurance for the workforce, timely pension payment for retired workers, mortgage scheme for housing, befitting labour secretariat and representation of workers’ unions in MDA boards’ appointments.

    Sanwo-Olu said he had directed the Commissioner for Finance to look into the unpaid arrears of workers’ medical allowance, with a charge to clear the backlog and make payment to the affected workers. The Governor added that the State was planning to absorb its entire workforce in the recently introduced health insurance scheme, observing that the Ministry of Health was harmonising the modality to ensure all workers were covered in the scheme.

    The Government, Sanwo-Olu said, will collaborate with the Organised Labour Unions to float a post-retirement housing scheme that would enable workers of all cadres to apply and acquire permanent homes after leaving the service. Lagos, the Governor promised, would be donating land for the purpose, while the labour unions would source for finance to develop the scheme.

    In addition, Sanwo-olu said his government had approved discounted rent for the workers occupying State-owned apartments. This, he said, is part of the welfare programmes introduced by his Government to improve workers’ productivity.

    The Governor said his administration had started to tackle challenges limiting the workers’ productivity, including massive rehabilitation of critical highways across the state to reduce travel time and diffuse road congestion.

    It was a moment of excitement for the union leaders, following the Governor’s pronouncement to pay above the minimum wage. They described Sanwo-Olu as “a listening leader” and observed that the Governor had started to fulfil promises made to the unions in the build up to the 2019 elections.

    Chairman of Lagos Council of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Gbenga Ekundayo, listed re-introduction of Town Hall meeting with labour unions and appointment of more women into the State’s cabinet as part of the promises fulfilled by the Governor.

    Ekundayo informed the Governor that the labour unions had been meeting to develop a framework that would make the Government to capture traders in informal sector in the tax net. He assured that the labour unions’ recommendations would be submitted to the Head of Service (HOS), Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, in the coming weeks.

    Chairperson of the Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Funmi Sessi, described workers as government’s partners in progress, while appreciating Sanwo-Olu for keeping some of his promises with the workers’ unions.

    She promised that the Organised Labour would continue to support the Government’s efforts towards improving the wellbeing of the residents and workers in the State.

    Sanwo-Olu also met with members of Lagos State Public Service Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) led by Comrade Rasak Falade at the State House.

    Top government officials who joined Gov. Sanwo-Olu at both meetings with Organised Labour Unions’ leaders included the Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pension, Mrs. Ajibola Ponnle, and HOS, Mr. Muri-Okunola, among others.

    The Lagos State Government over the weekend announced the repositioning of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) formerly known as KAI to spearhead the state’s campaign to enforce the zero tolerance for indiscriminate waste disposal, street trading, erection of temporary structures on drainage setbacks, open defecation and also assisting to checkmate the activities of commercial motorcyclists who ply pedestrian walkways.

    The state’s position was stated by the Commissioner for The Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello during a familiarization visit to the head office of LAGESC at Safety Arena Complex, Oshodi alongside the Special Adviser on Drainage and Water Resources, Engineer Joe Igbokwe.

    Bello said LAGESC officers would now be posted to the major highways with security back up as a first step to enforcing the zero tolerance and state sanitation laws.

    He emphasized that the present administration would in addition to providing necessary security back ups for their operation, also equip the operatives with all the necessary kits and equipment to protect themselves from attacks by criminally minded individuals in the course of performing their legitimate duties on the highways as dictated by the law establishing the outfit.

    He warned the officers against indulging in acts of bribery and corruption or making use of proxies to receive gratification from environmental sanitation offenders, stating that monitoring gangs have been formed that would be keeping an eye on the activities of the LAGESC officers as they go about their duties and that anyone found wanting would face appropriate disciplinary measures.

    He said his visit to the LAGESC office was to reassure the officers of the commitment of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to their welfare and also boost their morale by recognizing hard work and to be ready to rise up for the task ahead, saying in the new dispensation, indolence would not be tolerated and that anyone of the employees who feels he cannot measure up to the new expectation has the option of opting out now.

    Bello said as part of the measures to reposition the LAGESC, the present pink Uniform would be changed to the old uniform to reflect the colour of the environment and send the right message about total enforcement of the state sanitation laws, just as the necessary amendments would be made to the law to revert to the old name of Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) which was the original name given to the outfit at inception.

    The Commissioner who had an interactive session with all the operatives gave a commitment that the government would stand by them at all times even when issues of persecution or harassment arises in the course of performing legitimate duties, saying they should be fair and firm in their dealings with members of the public at all times as that would be the only basis upon which government can intercede if they are harassed.

    He tasked the management of the agency to also look into the possibility of working out off days for officers, some of who complained of working for seven days in the week, saying such working condition is prone to aggravating breakdowns and low productivity, adding that the choice of a retired Commissioner of Police as Corps Marshal, CP Gbemisola Akinpelu (rtd) for the agency by the State was to ensure collaboration with security agencies.

    He revealed that part of the main task of LAGESC operatives this year would be the securing of the Lagos Outer Marina corridor which will soon be landscaped and beautified into a park as part of efforts to restore the lost glory of the area which has now been overtaken by weeds and undesirable elements.

    Also speaking, the Special Adviser on Drainage and Water Resources, Engineer Joe Igbokwe implored the officers to work with diligence and always apply diplomacy while operating, adding that their operations is prone to confrontations and attacks.

    The Commissioner had earlier inspected a guard of honour mounted by officers of the Corps after a parade during the visit, which also had the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environment, Mrs Aderonke Odeneye and other directors of the ministry in attendance.

    The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC)has described the victory of Gov.Babajide Sanwoolu at the Elections Petitions Tribunal as a re- affirmation that he got the mandate of the people in the March elections .

    Mr Abiodun Salami,Assistant Publicity Secretary of the party in the state,in a statement on Monday in Lagos ,said the victory was a judicial vindication of the belief Lagosians have in the governor to move the state forward.

    The Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Lagos had on Monday dismissed the petitions filed by the Labour Party and reaffirmed the victory of Sanwoolu as the duly-elected governor in the March polls.

    The Tribunal described the LP petition as’ a ‘futile and wasteful exercise”,noting that the petitioner could not prove their allegations of mental incompetence against Sanwo-Olu.

    Justice T.T Asua,while delivering the judgement , said the petitioners ( LP and Ifagbemi Awamaridi )also failed to prove the allegations of electoral practices against Sanwoolu and his party,APC.

    Salami said the victory was a validation of the support the people have for Sanwoolu and proof that the petition was all along ”a wild goose chase”

    The Lagos spokesman congratulated Lagosians on the victory as it was not only victory for the governor but also for the people and good governance.

    ”We are happy at the victory; it is a reaffirmation that the governor got the the mandate and support of the people in the March election .

    ”We congratulate the governor and the good people of Lagos on the judicial vindication of this electoral victory.This verdict is not only a victory for democracy ,it is a victory for good governance and a more prosperous Lagos ”,he said.

    Salami assured residents that the verdict would further inspire the Sanwoolu administration to render impactful governance in the state.

    He said the governor was justifying the confidence reposed in him with his many achievements since he was sworn in over 100 days ago.

    The APC spokesman listed the achievements to include fixing of potholes across the state to tackle the nagging problem of gridlock .

    Salami said the efficiency of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) had improved as a result of increase in their allowances by Sanwoolu

    ”The refuse problem is fading away with the resuscitation of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA)’s PSP model on waste management .

    ”Wastes are now being promptly cleared and the state is getting cleaner.The right attitude to the environment is being restored”,he said.

    He added that the Sanwoolu administration had commenced work on the Lagos -Badagry Expressway ,a project which had suffered delays before now,noting that the sufferings on the road were being alleviated .

    He said the Sanwoolu administration had achieved great results in addressing the gridlock in Apapa.

    ” Security has been beefed up in the state with the provision og 125 patrol vehicles and 45 patrol motorcycles to the police and other security agencies.

    ”The Sanwoolu administration has also completed a 495 housing estate at igando .He has made interventions in the health and education sector and had done well in the area of empowerment of the people ”,he said

    Salami urged residents to keep faith with the present administration to deliver more dividends of democracy.
