As of today, 22nd November 2023, Javier Tebas Medrano has tendered his resignation as president of LALIGA.
As a result, an electoral process has begun during which, in accordance with the provisions of the statutes and regulations, a random selection process will be conducted today to appoint the members of the Electoral Commission. Once in place, it will be responsible for starting the election process.
Tebas, 61, Â tendered his resignation to vice-presidents, Quico Catalan and Miguel Angel Gil Marin on Wednesday. Catalan and Marin have been tasked with triggering new elections and forming a new electoral commission that will comprise three La Liga clubs and two Segunda clubs. He announced his decision a month before his mandate was due to end on December 26, and will present himself as a candidate for a fourth term, after taking the reins of La Liga in 2013.
The election process, which is expected to last a month, was expedited to prevent overlapping with the Royal Spanish Football Federation elections which are set for early 2024. Tebas faces little competition and enjoys broad support among club presidents both in La Liga and the Segunda Division. He had been elected unopposed in 2013 and 2019, and it is believed that he will return to power for his third consecutive term ahead of 2024Â
Tebas’ 10 years as La Liga president have seen him work hard to strengthen the competition’s international image and have also seen a more equitable division of TV rights.
