The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has initiated a two-day Public Inquiry into three critical regulatory instruments from May 21 to 22, 2024. The event, held at the NCC Headquarters in Abuja, is a key part of the Commission’s consultative approach to regulatory development.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the NCC, emphasized the Commission’s dedication to transparency and inclusivity. He highlighted the public inquiry as a testament to ensuring all voices are heard and considered when shaping the future of the industry.
The public inquiry focused on three key regulatory instruments. These are the Telecommunications Networks Interconnect Regulations, which are aimed at keeping pace with technological advancements, fostering competition, protecting consumer interests, and aligning with international standards in the area of network interconnection.
Also the Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators. This framework ensures fairness and transparency when disconnecting operators, protecting them from unjustified actions while upholding contractual obligations. Equally, the Guidelines for Dispute Resolution which will help to streamline the dispute resolution process, saving time and costs while minimizing service disruptions, particularly for smaller claims.
Mrs. Chizua Whyte, Ag. Head of Legal & Regulatory Services at the NCC welcomed participants and underscored the importance of stakeholder input. She emphasized the Commission’s commitment to collaboration in fostering a dynamic and robust communications sector that supports the Nigerian economy.
The public inquiry provided a platform for industry experts, stakeholders, and engaged citizens to contribute valuable insights and perspectives. This feedback will be crucial in refining the regulatory instruments and ensuring they effectively address the evolving needs and challenges of the Nigerian communications industry.
