The Benin–Asaba Expressway Concession Company (BAECC) has announced that it has suspended activities on the road for the yuletide. Despite this, motorists continue to experience significant traffic congestion along the Benin–Agbor axis and the Benin–Asaba Bypass corridor.
According to the Head of Public Communications, Benin Asaba Expressway Concession Company Limited, Dr Jerry Adeyeri, in response to growing concerns from the commuting public, the company wishes to clarify that all construction activities have been temporarily paused. To ensure the widest possible passage for travellers during this busy holiday season, BAECC has not closed any section of the expressway; rather, all construction equipment and heavy machinery have been strategically withdrawn from the carriageway to facilitate a smoother flow of vehicles.
According to preliminary assessments, the challenges currently being experienced are primarily the result of an exceptional surge in seasonal traffic volume, compounded by frequent vehicle breakdowns. Furthermore, movement has been severely hindered by a lack of compliance with traffic management instructions in certain sections, resulting in unnecessary bottlenecks along the corridor.
BAECC makes an urgent appeal to all motorists and road users to exercise patience and maintain a high level of orderliness while plying the route. The expressway maintains sufficient capacity to accommodate the current volume of travellers, provided that road users follow official instructions and move in a disciplined manner. Dangerous manoeuvres, such as driving against traffic or forcing one-way movements, only serve to worsen the gridlock and place the lives of other commuters at risk.
The company strongly urges motorists to cooperate with the traffic managers and security personnel deployed along the corridor, whose presence is dedicated solely to ensuring the safety and ease of movement for everyone. While BAECC is working tirelessly with these agencies to restore the natural flow of traffic, these objectives can only be realized if motorists adhere to the guidance provided by controllers on the ground. BAECC remains committed to supporting the public and assures all road users that every effort is being made to maintain a steady traffic flow while construction remains suspended.
