EQUITIES MARKET:
The Nigerian equities market extended its weak momentum at the close of today’s trading session as the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) edged lower by 5 basis points to settle at 247,438.74 points. The marginal decline was driven by renewed sell pressure in select heavyweights, which offset pockets of buying interest across the broader market.
The slight decline was fueled by losses in FIDSON, ACCESSCORP, OANDO, BUACEMENT, NB, STANBIC alongside 26 other stocks that closed in negative territory.
Consequently, the market’s year-to-date (YTD) return retreated to 58.88%, as market capitalization contracted by 0.05% to settle at ₦159.51 trillion, wiping ₦76.56 billion off the bourse.
Sectoral performance closed negative, with four of the five tracked indices closing in the red, and one in the green. The Insurance Index recorded the steepest decline, falling 1.69%, dragged by losses in SUNUASSUR, NEM, REGALINS, VERITASKAP, INTENEGINS, FTGINSURE, SOVRENINS, PRESTIGE, and UNIVINSURE, despite gains in LASACO, LINKASSURE, and MBENEFIT. The Consumer Goods Index shed 1.07% as losses in INTBREW, CADBURY, and NB overshadowed gains in DANGSUGAR and CHAMPION. Also, the Industrial Goods Index edged lower by 0.06% as gains in HBMNG were offset by losses in BUACEMENT and TRANSPOWER.
The Oil & Gas Index declined 0.14%, pressured by OANDO, despite gains in JAPAULGOLD. On the positive side, Banking emerged as the only advancing sector, gaining 0.78% on the back of buying interest in FIRSTHOLDCO, FIDELITYBK, STERLINGNG, UBA, WEMABANK, and ZENITHBANK, which outweighed declines in ACCESSCORP and JAIZBANK.
MARKET ACTIVITY: Market activity was positive, as total traded volume and value advanced, adding 3.81% and 73.60% to settle at 637.96 million units and ₦57.20 billion, respectively.
MARKET BREADTH: The market breadth, which measures investor sentiment through the Gainers/Losers ratio declined to 0.84x from 1.28x as 27 stocks appreciated, 32 stocks depreciated, and 72 stocks closed flat.
FIXED INCOME MARKET: The average yields of the Treasury Bill and Bond markets closed bullish at 18.16% and 17.06%, respectively.
The Naira depreciated marginally by 0.01% to close at ₦1,362.21/$.
