The market retreated today, as the NGXASI dipped by 146bps to close at 142,613.47 points. The downtrend was driven by sustained sell-offs across key bellwether stocks, wiping out the modest gains recorded in the previous session and dragging the benchmark index lower.

Profit-taking in bellwethers such as DANGCEM, ZENITHBANK, OANDO, NB, GTCO, and ACCESSCORP, along with 32 other laggards, pressured the market to the downside.

Market capitalisation fell by 1.46% to ₦90.23 trillion, erasing about ₦1.3 trillion from investors’ wealth. As a result, the Year-to-Date (YTD) return moderated to 38.56%.

Sectoral performance was largely negative, with four of the five tracked indices closing in the red. The Industrial (-4.37%), Insurance (-3.86%), Banking (-2.06%), and Oil & Gas (-0.68%) indices all declined, weighed down by sell-offs in DANGCEM, ROYALEX, LASACO, WAPIC, LINKASSURE, SOVERNINS, UNIVINSURE, ZENITHBANK, GTCO, ACCESSCORP, and OANDO. On the other hand, the Consumer Goods index emerged as the lone gainer, advancing by 0.57% on the back of price appreciation in INTBREW, CADBURY, and DANGSUGAR.

MARKET ACTIVITY: Trading activity was mixed as total volume declined by 10.39% to 1.03 billion units while the value traded appreciated by 9.22% to ₦17.66 billion.

MARKET BREADTH: The market breadth, which measures investor sentiment through the Gainers/Losers ratio decreased to 0.68x from 1.65x as 26 stocks appreciated, 38 stocks depreciated and 64 stocks closed flat.

FIXED INCOME MARKET: Treasury bills and Bonds trading closed on a bearish note as average yield dipped to 18.17% and  16.45% respectively.

CURRENCY MARKET: The Naira depreciated  by 0.08% to close at  ₦1,534.93
