In a significant stride for the public relations industry in Nigeria, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management. This partnership aims to establish a degree-awarding academy dedicated to advancing public relations practice in Nigeria.
Additionally, Nigeria’s influence in the field has been further acknowledged with the election of Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan as the Secretary-General of the African Public Relations Association (APRA). This prestigious position highlights Nigeria’s leadership role in shaping the public relations landscape across Africa.
In a landmark development, public relations has been officially recognized as a cadre within the Federal Civil Service, effective December 2023. The Information Officer Cadre will now be known as the ‘Information and Public Relations Officer Cadre,’ and the Executive Cadre as the ‘Executive Officer (Information and Public Relations).’ The NIPR played a crucial role in advocating for this change, earning commendation for their efforts.
Nigeria continues to lead the enhancement of public relations practices both domestically and continentally. During a recent meeting with Mr. Arik Karani, President of APRA, he lauded Nigeria’s pioneering efforts in professionalizing public relations. He remarked, “Nigeria was, for the longest time, the only country in Africa that had a law that professionalized public relations. Nigeria started it on the continent, and Zambia only came up with its own law last year. So now we have two countries on the continent, and only now in Kenya, the bill for professionalizing public relations is at the second reading in Parliament.”
These developments are encouraging, and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reaffirms its commitment to providing an enabling environment for growth within Nigeria’s communications industry.
