The Nigerian Super Falcons have once again asserted their dominance in African women’s football, securing a historic tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title today, defeating host nation Morocco in a captivating final held at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
The victory marks the successful completion of “Mission X,” as the Nigerian team had dubbed their quest for a tenth continental crown coming into the tournament. This latest triumph adds to their unparalleled legacy, building on their nine previous WAFCON victories.
The Atlas Lionesses led 2-0 before the Super Falcons scored three goals to win the cup. The Super Falcons trailed in the first half by 0-2 after Ghiziane Chebbak scored in the 12th minute and Sanaa Mssuody added another for the host in the 24th minute. But the Nigerian girls changed the game in the second half.
Esther Okoronkwo scored for Nigeria through a penalty in the 64th minute. Folashade Ijalumusi added the equalizer in the 71st minute, while Jennifer Echegini scored the winner in the 88th minute.
Adding to Nigeria’s accolades, Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade was deservedly named the Player of the Tournament, recognising her outstanding contributions throughout the competition, while Chiamaka Nnadozie was named the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament. Esther Okoronkwo won the Player of the Match award for her exceptional performance in the final.
For the Moroccan Atlas Lionesses, it was a poignant sense of déjà vu. Having also lost the previous WAFCON final to South Africa on home soil, today’s defeat brought another wave of heartbreak. Their wait for a maiden WAFCON title continues, despite a valiant effort in front of their home crowd.
The 2025 WAFCON final showcased the growing talent and competitive spirit within African women’s football, culminating in a memorable clash between the continent’s most decorated team and an ambitious host. Nigeria’s enduring success solidifies their position at the pinnacle of African women’s football.
