The Nigerian entertainment industry has been plunged into mourning following the confirmed death of beloved Nollywood actor and model, Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke. The award-winning star reportedly passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at a private medical facility in Lagos. He was 40 years old.
According to family sources and initial reports from major news outlets, Ekubo’s death was attributed to complications arising from kidney failure associated with cancer. While rumours of his declining health had circulated on social media in recent months, the suddenness of his passing has sent shockwaves through the global African film community.

Born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Ekubo hailed from Arochukwu in Abia State. He attended Federal Government College, Daura, in Katsina State, and studied Law at the University of Calabar. Before fully immersing himself in acting, he gained early prominence as the first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest. His striking looks and undeniable charm quickly caught the attention of filmmakers, leading to his breakout role in the 2012 film Weekend Getaway.
Over the next decade, Ekubo became a staple of Nollywood, particularly known for his versatility in romantic comedies and intense dramas. His filmography includes acclaimed titles such as Weekend Getaway, Afamefuna, A Sunday Affair, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, Power of 1, The First Lady, Zero Hour, and The Bling Lagosians.
