Prof. Hakeem Danmole dead

Renowned Professor of History and the Dean of College of Humanities and Social Science at Al-Hilmah University, Ilorin, Kwara State, Professor Hakeem Olumide Danmole, is dead.

According to the news gathered by our correspondent, the unfortunate incident happened yesterday, May 29, 2026.

Professor Hakeem Olumide Danmole was born on June 17 1949 in Idigba/Agarawo, Lagos Island. He had his secondary education at Jibril Martin Anwar-ul-Islam Grammar School, Iponri, 1961-1966 and Ijebu Mushin College, Ijebu Ode, 1968-69 respectively.

He proceeded to the first and the best, University of Ibadan for his BA Honours Degree. He had his Masters and PhD Degrees at the University of Birmingham, England in 1976 and 1980 respectively. 

He was a Lagos State Scholar at different times- 1970-74; 1975-76 at the University of Ibadan and a Federal Government Scholar, 1979-80 at the University of Birmingham.

He joined the services of the Department of History, University of Ilorin as one of the foundation staff where he rose from an Assistant Lecturer to the rank of Professor in 1992. 

Prof H.O. Danmole has held many administrative positions in his career, Head of Department, Member of Senate, Dean to mention but a few. He was a British Academy Fellow 1996 – 1999, visiting scholar, German African Studies, Berlin and several others.

He is a member of the Historical Society of Nigeria; German African Studies Association; African Studies Association; School of Oriental and African Studies, U.K; Nigerian Association for Oral History and Traditions.

He has taught several courses from undergraduate to postgraduate level as well as supervising many PhD students who are renowned professors today. He widely published both in national and international journals. He has also edited and co-edited some books and has authorship of others. 

Prof H.O. Danmole transferred his service to Lagos State University in 2009 and after his retirement in 2014, he continued to pursue his academic interests.

He was married to the late Prof Mrs. B.T. Danmole, the first daughter of the late Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi, she died in 2022 at the age of 71. The Danmoles are survived by three children.
