Nigerians’ hope for fresh economic policy thrusts towards economic prosperity under the President Muhammadu Buhari came alive on Monday as the Federal Government constituted a new Economic Advisory Council (EAC).

The council, which has Prof. Doyin Salami of Lagos Business School as its Chairman, also included Dr. Mohammed Sagagi (Vice-Chairman); Prof. Ode Ojowu; Dr. Shehu Yahaya; Dr. Iyabo Masha; Prof. Chukwuma Soludo; Mr. Bismark Rewane; and Dr. Mohammed Adaya Salisu (Secretary).

The advisory council would report directly to the President and replace the current Economic Management Team (EMT) led by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

EAC is expected to “advise the President on economic policy matters, including fiscal analysis, economic growth and a range of internal and global economic issues working with the relevant cabinet members and heads of monetary and fiscal agencies.”

The council would have monthly technical sessions as well as scheduled quarterly meetings with the President.

“The chairman may, however, request for unscheduled meetings with the President if the need arises,” said a statement by Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

Nigerians are anxiously waiting for the council’s new economic direction for the well-being of all and sundry
