…must be independent and accountable
As more Nigerian states venture into airline operations, an aviation expert based in the United States, Engr. Femi Adeniji, has expressed support for the move, noting it could drive economic growth and regional development.
In a recent interview, he said that well-managed state-owned airlines can enhance accessibility, improve public services, stimulate local industries, and create jobs, provided they operate transparently and independently of political interference.
Speaking specifically on Enugu State’s recent acquisition of an aircraft to launch a state-owned airline, Adeniji said the initiative is a welcome development, especially if it avoids the pitfalls that once crippled Nigeria Airways.
He warned that, states should not repeat the mistakes of the past, stressing how political misuse and financial indiscipline contributed to the collapse of the former national carrier, Nigeria Airways.
The aviation expert also warned that state governments must refrain from turning the airline into a political tool or a free service for government officials.
However, Adeniji also cautioned that launching and sustaining an airline in Nigeria is challenging.
He pointed to the volatility of foreign exchange rates, high operational costs, and a limited passenger base as factors that could threaten viability.
“Will the state continue to subsidize operations indefinitely?, that’s not sustainable.”
According to him, success will depend largely on accountability, proper planning, and strong maintenance culture.
“It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you maintain and operate”.
He also warned against monopolistic tendencies, urging that private sector participation must not be stifled.
