    Feature: The rise of response-ready cybersecurity

     If there’s one thing the current threat landscape has made clear, it’s that prevention and response readiness aren’t mutually exclusive – instead, you need both. Preventative controls are essential, but the uncomfortable truth is that they’re never a guarantee of protection.

    Phishing is a good example – it’s no longer clumsy or obvious but instead is more sophisticated than ever. Threat actors understand the policies and tooling that organisations use, and they know how certain rules can be relaxed to gain access. Through obfuscation and other techniques, a threat can enter an environment quite legitimately, and preventative controls alone won’t necessarily stop access.

    Data breaches are real. In fact, based on what we’re seeing in the field, they’re happening more often than many organisations would like to admit. It only takes one click – one person – and if your response capability isn’t up to speed at that point, you’re not dealing with a minor issue but a potential catastrophe. 

    From there, every preventative control you’ve invested in can become irrelevant. Your incident response capability needs to kick in immediately: isolate the threat, contain it, and cut off its oxygen supply before it can spread further through the environment.

    So, how do you balance prevention and response? The reality is that you don’t have a choice: one shouldn’t be prioritised over the other, but response is becoming increasingly critical in determining outcomes.

    The discipline of response: practise or pay the price

    Response readiness isn’t something you design once and then forget. It needs to be tested regularly. Ideally, organisations should be running simulations at least monthly, especially against critical applications. It keeps risk top of mind, particularly for people who aren’t security-focused day to day. It also exposes how teams actually respond under pressure and whether your processes are efficient enough.

    Many organisations work towards a four-hour response and resolution window. That means isolating the threat, stabilising the environment and resuming business operations within that timeframe – but you don’t get there by accident. If you don’t practise, you won’t perform when it matters. It’s the same principle as sport; training is what determines whether or not you hit the mark under pressure.

    Ransomware: a clear test of resilience

    Nowhere is the shift from prevention to response more visible than in ransomware attacks. These attacks have evolved rapidly, and they no longer fit neatly into categories like malware, worms or classic ransomware. Today, they’re often a combination of techniques, aimed at locking organisations out of their own information.

    One of the primary attack vectors is still the user, because threats are delivered in ways that appear completely legitimate. Attackers understand the limits of security tools and how far automated scanning typically goes, and they exploit trusted communication channels, sometimes even accounts of colleagues that have been compromised.

    Attackers often begin with credential harvesting. Once they gain access, ransomware may follow, but it’s rarely the first or only stage. Platforms exist that scrape publicly available information from across the internet and social media, building profiles on individuals and organisations. That includes emails, phone numbers, images and employment details. Threat actors then use this information to impersonate people convincingly, sending emails or messages that appear authentic.

    Corporate networks are generally secure, so attackers often target users on mobile devices, where controls are weaker. A seemingly innocent WhatsApp link can expose credentials when protections are absent on laptops. The moment something seems out of character, it’s critical to pause, verify and close the loop. A simple phone call can prevent compromise.

    The key lesson here: ransomware highlights why preparedness and response matter more than prevention alone. Even the most advanced preventive controls can fail, but an organisation that is resilient, well-practised and ready to respond can isolate the threat quickly, contain it, and resume normal business operations without paying the ransom.

    What resilience actually looks like

    A mature ransomware resilience strategy is built on a governance-driven, risk-based approach. It requires due diligence across the organisation, not just within IT. That includes governance checkpoints, policy reviews and alignment with recognised frameworks and standards. It’s about becoming data-centric, understanding where your data resides and ensuring that everything supporting it is secure.

    That means hardened infrastructure, closed ports, patched operating systems and effective vulnerability management to keep systems aligned with best practice and benchmark standards, but it also means something broader: a culture of resilience.

    Ultimately, mature organisations understand the importance of business continuity planning, disaster recovery, regular simulations and ongoing policy reviews. Because resilience isn’t built in a single layer, cybersecurity must put equal focus on people, processes and technology working together. Each of those elements needs equal attention if an organisation wants to build real resilience. 

    If there’s a single shift organisations need to make, it’s to stop thinking purely in terms of prevention and start thinking in terms of preparedness. There’s no way to be 100 per cent safe, but you can be ready and, in today’s environment, readiness is what determines whether an incident becomes a disruption or a full-blown crisis.

    Meta shares tips to help older adults avoid online scams

    Meta, as part of its ongoing global anti-scam awareness campaign, has shared the latest trends in scams targeting older adults, new safety tools, and tips for how to spot and avoid scammers online.

    Since the start of the year, Meta has detected and disrupted close to 8 million accounts on Facebook and Instagram associated with criminal scam centers targeting people, including older adults, globally through messaging, dating apps, social media, crypto, and other apps.

    “The fight against scams and fraud is a relentless one, and we are continually evolving our defenses to stay ahead of bad actors,” said Kojo Boakye, Vice President of Public Policy, Africa, Middle East and Türkiye at Meta. “This is part of our unwavering commitment to protect our users, not just by banning malicious accounts, but by empowering individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to recognize and avoid these sophisticated threats.”

    Tips for older adults

    • Be cautious with unsolicited messages or calls. Never share personal or financial information in response to unexpected calls, emails, or texts. 
    • Pause and check in with people you trust.  Scammers often create a false sense of urgency or panic. Take a moment, and talk to someone you trust before responding.
    • Use official customer service channels. If you need help, always call the company’s official hotline or go to their website to find their contact info. Don’t click on links in emails or texts.

    Tips for families to help older adults in their lives stay safe online

    • Proactively discuss how they can be on the look out for scams. Talk openly with your loved ones about common scams. Let them know that scams can happen to anyone, and it’s important to double-check with you or someone they trust before acting on a suspicious request.
    • Share scam prevention basics and resources. You can visit Meta’s Scam Prevention Hub for more info on common scams and how to avoid or report them. You can also remind them to report scams to local police.
    • Set up security alerts together. Help older adults enable security alerts on their accounts that can notify them of unusual logins or large transactions. Become a “trusted contact” at their financial institution, so you’ll be notified of any suspicious activity. 

    Meta’s latest anti-scam tools

    • Warnings on WhatsApp, when you attempt to share your screen with an unknown contact during a video call. With this new tool Meta gives users more context to spot and avoid scams.  
    • Passkeys on Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp, to make it safer to sign in with the same fingerprint, face, or PIN you already use on your mobile device to verify your identity.
    • Security Checkup on Facebook and Instagram, to review your security settings and get recommendations on security actions like updating your password.
    • Privacy Checkup on WhatsApp guides you through important privacy settings — like deciding who can add you to groups — to help you choose the right level of protection, all in one place.

    Social engineering is the reason, no matter what security measures you have in place on your devices, criminals will circumvent them

    Up to 90% of all successful cybersecurity attacks involve social engineering; exploiting human vulnerabilities. While technical measures like strong passwords and anti-virus updates are crucial, cultivating mindfulness can be an equally powerful defence against these human-centric attacks, writes Anna Collard, SVP Content Strategy & Evangelist at KnowBe4 AFRICA. 

    There’s nothing worse than knowing that someone has just hacked into your account. Whether it is your inbox or your bank account does not matter. You can relate to that awful, sick feeling in your gut that you have been foolish enough to fall for someone’s trickery. 

    Social engineering is how most cyber criminals get the key to your front door. They dupe you into revealing your password or logging into your online account, often instilling fear or a false sense of urgency. These attacks can be in the form of phishing emails, phone calls, SMSs, social media messages, chat apps or on gaming platforms.  

    Social engineering is the reason, no matter what security measures you have in place on your devices, criminals will circumvent them. Scammers are experts at bypassing cybersecurity defences and manipulating the human mind. 

    Understanding human vulnerabilities 

    Why are humans so susceptible to hacking? Many factors make humans vulnerable to social-engineering attacks. These range from cognitive, psychological, behavioural, and situational factors to simple demographics (teens and older adults are most often targeted). Cognitive biases play a role here, such as a confirmation bias that seeks information that confirms what you already believe, but so does stress and fatigue. 

    When you have been doing the same task for a while, your ability to remain vigilant decreases. Similarly, being distracted and multi-tasking are situational factors which can impede your thinking. (This happened to me while chatting to someone and checking my emails at the same time—I unwittingly clicked on a simulated phishing test.) 

    Mindfulness: A powerful defence 

    Amid all the horror stories of social engineering, it is comforting to know that there is a defence that we can all tap into and that costs nothing: mindfulness. Mindfulness is the practice of remaining alert, calm, and present. Rather than being a personality trait, it’s more a state of mind. 

    Three fundamental aspects, each of which directly relates to improving cybersecurity awareness shape mindfulness: 

    1. Present moment focus: By staying attentive to the current task, you are less likely to fall victim to distractions that could lead to security mistakes. 
    2. Meta-awareness: This involves being attentive to internal and external experiences (thoughts and emotions) (such as unusual email requests or suspicious phone calls). 
    3. Non-judgmental and non-reactive attitude: This allows you to approach potential threats or emotional triggers with curiosity rather than fear, enabling more rational decision-making. 

    Mindfulness is the perfect countermeasure to the mindlessness that makes you vulnerable to phishing. I have done extensive research into how incorporating mindfulness into cybersecurity awareness training programs can enhance people’s defences against social engineering attacks. This is especially crucial as cybercriminals are progressively using advanced methods using generative AI and automation in their attacks, highlighting the need for mental resilience. 

    Practical mindfulness techniques for cybersecurity 

    There are many practices to nurture mindfulness and awareness that can directly improve your cybersecurity posture. 

    1. Single-tasking: Start your day with a list and be intentional about doing each task in 45-minute sprints. This focused approach can help you stay alert to potential security risks. 
    2. Mindful email checking: Instead of constantly monitoring your inbox, set specific times for checking emails. This allows you to approach each message with a more reflective and security-conscious mindset. 
    3. Body awareness: How fast is your heart beating? What is your breathing like? By focusing on these vital signs first, your body might identify that ‘something is off’, indicating a potential security threat before your rational mind is aware of it.  
    4. Breathing: Perhaps the most well-known technique to calm our nervous system is deep belly breathing with longer exhales. An example is the 12-second box-breathing technique practised by the US Navy Seals. When you feel tense, anxious or pressured into an urgent request, take a moment to practise this technique before responding. 
    5. Pause and reflect: Before clicking on links or downloading attachments, pause for a moment. Ask yourself: “Is this expected? Does it make sense?” This moment of reflection can prevent many security breaches. 

    Implementing mindfulness in security awareness training 

    I believe that empowering individuals to become more mindful can really complement security awareness training. This could also involve ways to organise our work so that we are less stressed, whether it is having shorter meetings, doing a stretch class during our lunch break, or simply doing one thing at a time. 

    Cultivating mindfulness not only enhances overall well-being but also serves as a powerful tool in strengthening cybersecurity defences. By incorporating mindfulness techniques into our daily routines and cybersecurity practices, we can create a more robust defence against social engineering attacks.  

    By staying present, aware, and calm, we can transform our minds into our greatest cybersecurity asset.

    TikTok Challenge Used To Circulate Information-Stealing Malware – NCC

    The Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has warned about the potential harm of taking part in the Invisible Challenge on short-form video hosting service, TokTok, revealing that it exposes devices to Information-Stealing Malware.

    An NCC-CSIRT advisory said threat actors have taken advantage of a viral TikTok challenge, known as the Invisible Challenge, to disseminate an information-stealing malware known as the WASP (or W4SP) stealer.

    The WASP stealer, which is high in probability with critical damage potential, is a persistent malware hosted on discord that its developer claim is undetectable.

    The advisory said “The Invisible Challenge involves wrapping a somewhat transparent body contouring filter around a presumed naked individual. Attackers are uploading videos to TikTok with a link to software that they claim can reverse the filter’s effects.

    “Those who click on the link and attempt to download the software, known as “unfilter,” are infected with the WASP stealer. Suspended accounts had amassed over a million views after initially posting the videos with a link. Following the link leads to the “Space Unfilter” Discord server, which had 32,000 members at its peak but has since been removed by its creators.

    “Successful installation will allow the malware to harvest keystrokes, screenshots, network activity, and other information from devices where it is installed. It may also covertly monitor user behaviour and harvest Personally Identifiable Information (PII), including names and passwords, keystrokes from emails, chat programs, websites visited, and financial activity. This malware may be capable of covertly collecting screenshots, video recordings, or the ability to activate any connected camera or microphone,” it explained.

    The Team said some ways to forestall such an attack include avoiding clicking on suspicious links, using anti-malware software on your devices, checking app tray and removing any apps that you do not remember installing or that are dormant and embracing healthy password hygiene practices such as using a password manager.

    The CSIRT is the telecom sector’s cyber security incidence centre set up by the NCC to focus on incidents in the telecom sector and as they may affect telecom consumers and citizens at large.

    The CSIRT also works collaboratively with Nigerian Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT), established by the Federal Government to reduce the volume of future computer risk incidents by preparing, protecting, and securing Nigerian cyberspace to forestall attacks, and problems or related events.
