    Nestlé Nigeria proudly announces the winners of the 2024 Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK) Quiz Competition. The prestigious title was awarded to Oke-Ona United School, Ilugun Elega, in Ogun State, and UBE Primary School Pasali in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). These exceptional students showcased their profound understanding of healthy nutrition, hydration, physical activity, and sustainability, which are the core pillars of the N4HK initiative.

    The N4HK initiative, which aims to help 50 million children globally lead healthier lives by 2030, is Nestlé’s flagship program dedicated to fostering healthy habits from a young age. In Nigeria, this initiative includes a school-based nutrition education and environmental sustainability program that equips children with the knowledge to make better decisions regarding their nutrition and the environment, promoting a healthier future. The program benefits 35 schools: 20 in Ogun State, 10 in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and 5 in Lagos State. The Nutrition Quiz, incorporated as a crucial component of the N4HK program in Nigeria in 2020, is designed to enhance the recall and retention of the lessons learned by students.

    Across Lagos, Ogun, and the FCT, 135 eager children competed for the title of 2024 N4HK quiz champion. This competition not only reinforces the lessons taught but ensures that children internalize the information in a memorable way.

    At the Ogun State finals held in Abeokuta, Oke-Ona United School, Ilugun Elega, secured the first position, followed by St. Peters Primary School, Siun, in second place, and China Nigeria Friendship School Igbesa, Ado-Odo, Ota in third place.

    In the FCT, UBE Primary School Pasali emerged victorious, with Science Primary School (SPS) Abaji taking second place and Science Primary School Kwali securing third. All participating schools demonstrated remarkable understanding and dedication to the principles of healthy living.

    Victoria Uwadoka, Corporate Communications, Public Affairs, and Sustainability Lead at Nestlé Nigeria, highlighted the significance of this initiative: “By focusing on children’s health and well-being, Nestlé for Healthier Kids aims to create a lasting positive impact on future generations. Equipping children with healthy habits early on can have profound effects on individuals, families, and communities. We are incredibly proud of the students’ performance and their enthusiasm for learning about healthy living. I congratulate all the participants and extend heartfelt gratitude to our partners: the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board, FCT Universal Basic Education Board, Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health, Ogun State Ministry of Education, and Ogun State Ministry of Health for their invaluable support and collaboration.”

    The schools of the prize winners will receive the following awards: a basketball court with player jerseys for first place, a desktop computer for second place, and a table tennis court with a complete kit for third place.

    The Nestlé for Healthier Kids initiative aims to reach over 8,000 children annually in Nigeria, ensuring that today’s kids grow into healthy, informed adults. By catching them young, Nestlé is not just changing lives today but building a healthier, sustainable future for all.

    Nestle Nig Plc Officially hands over water projects donated to schools in Ogun

    The Nestle Nigeria Plc had today, Thursday – February 4, 2021, commissioned and officially handed over water and sanitation projects constructed for Oke-Ona United School, Abeokuta and St Paul’s Anglican School, Orile Imo in Obafemi Owode, both in Ogun State.

    The projects, according to Nestle Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Wassim Elhusseini, was to continuously providing communities, especially school pupils around its factory operations to live healthier lives by through free access to clean drinking water and better sanitation, as part of its commitment to raise awareness on water conservation and improve access to water and sanitation across its value chain.
    He said: “The company deemed it fit to believed that access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene is a basic human right, which helps to reduce mortality and morbidity rates, strengthen community resilience and support personal dignity.
    “The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for adequate sanitation and hygiene facilities as it is one of the sure ways of preventing the spread of the virus, yet, globally, billions of people still lack access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), increasing the risk of infections and diseases.
    “Through Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK), a school-based nutrition education programme promoting healthy nutrition, healthy hydration, good hygiene and active lifestyles, Nestlé Nigeria reaches over 17,000 children annually.
    “Recognizing water as essential for good hygiene, Nestlé Nigeria has continued to leead actions to provide clean and safe water in the N4HK beneficiary schools,” Mr Elhusseini, added.
    He emphasised that the projects would enable educators, learners, and as well as individuals and families within the communities have access to clean and safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.
    “At Nestlé, we recognise that water is essential for livelihood and wellbeing. This is why we are focused on ensuring that everyone within our immediate communities have access to clean, potable water. This is also important in the N4HK schools because we cannot talk about hygiene without water and sanitation facilities. It is our hope that these facilities will greatly improve the teaching and learning environment in Oke-Ona United School, Abeokuta and St Paul’s Anglican School, Orile Imo, Obafemi Owode.”
    In his address at the commissioner of the WASH facilities at Oke-Ona United School, Abeokuta, in Ogun State, the Honorable Commissioner for Education Professor Abayomi Arigbabu said “Indeed, no Government can single-handedly underwrite the cost of sound and effective education service delivery to her citizenry, hence the call of our education friendly Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun MFR to all Corporate and individual stakeholders to team up with government by investing in education.
    “Government is filled with gratitude to Nestle Nigeria Plc for the donation of water and sanitation projects for pupils and teachers of Oke-Ona United School, Abeokuta and St Paul’s Anglican School, Orile Imo, Obafemi Owode under the N4HK program. I am not in any doubt that this will add value to teaching and learning and will indeed accentuate healthy environment in the Schools.
    “I charge the direct beneficiaries of this facility to make the best use of this rare opportunity through constant maintenance of the facilities. Indeed, subsequent health report of our pupils must begin to reflect the significance of this monumental investment.”
    Also speaking at commissioning of the WASH facilities at Oke-Ona United School, the Honorable Commissioner for Community development and Cooperatives, Honorable Ganiyu Oladunjoye said, “The Prince Dapo Abiodun administration has created an unprecedented enabling environment for industries in Ogun State to thrive so that they would be able to meet their social responsibilities of supporting their host communities through infrastructural development.
    “This is evident in the various projects donated by Nestlé to her host communities. This gesture is commendable and highly appreciated by the government and people of Ogun State.”
    Also present at the commissioning of the water projects were community leaders from Oke-Ona and Orile-Imo, as well as invited guests and other stakeholders.
    The administration, educators and learners of both Oke-Ona United School and St Paul’s Anglican School, Orile Imo, expressed delight at finally having water and good toilet facilities within their schools.
    With the addition of these two new facilities, over 16,000 people living in the communities around Nestlé’s factories in Ogun State and Abaji in the FCT, now have access to clean and safe water.
    The company’s has over the years leading in the commitment of providing access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene, supports the Sustainable Development Goal 6 – ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
    An estimated 100 million Nigerians still lack basic sanitation facilities and 63 million do not have access to improved source of drinking-water. This is why consistent multi-stakeholder action is important to increase access.
