    Makinde Cuts Business Complex’ Rents, Warns Against Street Trading

    Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has announced a cut in the rent paid by occupants of the Ibadan Scout Camp Neighborhood Market’s open stalls and locked-up shops from Sixty-two thousand naira to Forty thousand naira for locked-up shops while the open stall was cut from sixteen thousand naira to eight thousand naira.

    The action, according to the Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives, Hon. Adeniyi Adebisi was premised on the promise of the State governor to reduce the cost of using government-owned shops across the State by traders and market women.

    Adebisi disclosed this while on a visit to the Scout Camp Market at Ibadan South-East local government in Ibadan on Friday, calling on the traders still displaying their wares by the road side to desist in order to be safe from accidents caused by passing vehicles as well as allow for free flow of traffic around the area.

    He added that the need for the traders to vacate the road side was also part of the decision to cut the rent for the locked-up shops and the open stalls, as some of the traders complained that the rent was not affordable for them, hence they had to use the road side.

    The Commissioner promised that the basic amenities craved by the traders in the market would be provided soon, saying “the present government has seen the rigors you go through to survive in this economy, we knew how much the past government has imposed on you and why some would decide to use the road side to display their wares, even against warning on the apparent danger posed by such act.

    “The rent on the locked-up shop is cut from sixty-two thousand naira to forty thousand naira while the rent of the open stall is cut from sixteen thousand naira to eight thousand naira respectively, this is to relief the shop owners of the cost and attract those using the road side to sell their goods to desist from doing so henceforth.

    “The State is aware of the basic amenities that are suppose to be here but lacking and work is going on to provide same, but we are warning those that will still want to continue to sell by the roadside that strict adherence to the law against street trading is currently being enforced, they should note this.”

    The Commissioner stressed that the decision to reduce the rent was taken after the governor paid unannounced visit to the market on Wednesday to find a lasting solution to the abandonment of the scout camp neighborhood market and to reiterate the government’s zero tolerance for street trading.

    The Chairman of the Market, Mr Kehinde Tewogbade said the traders were appreciative of the government’s gesture and promised to do all they could to support the policies and programmes of the administration.

    APC rues Makinde’s N8bn road expansion project

    The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State has raised the alarm over the plans by the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde to spend 8 billion on a proposed reconstruction of the Lagos/Iwo road Interchange axis in Ibadan, the state capital.

    The opposition described it as “a misplaced priority as well as an attempt to squander government resources”.

    Makinde had, on Friday, announced the state government’s plan to immediately embark on the project which would be completed in about a year as a measure to decongest the area and also give the physical outlook of Ibadan a facelift.

    The governor stated this at Adogba Central Mosque where he had joined the congregation for the weekly Jumat service to clear the air on what his government would do in compensation for the facilities expected to be consumed by the reconstruction project.

    But Oyo APC in a statement issued on Sunday and made available to journalists in Ibadan by its Assistant Publicity Secretary, Ayobami Adejumo, said that the present administration was now popular for building a castle in the air in demonstration of its gross incompetence and avowed desire for mismanaging public funds.

    “The good people of the pacesetter State were taken aback by the action of Governor Makinde last Friday when he chose a Mosque as the place to announce the plan to do a multi-billion project.

    “Without any record of presentation at the State Executive Council meeting or consideration and approval by the appropriate organs of government as required by law, the governor reeled out a contract sum for another white elephant project.

    “The question on the lips of many people now bothers on how the cost of N8 billion was arrived at even when no picture of the proposed picture has been shown to the world. What is the scope of the reconstruction project and where are the engineering designs where culminated in the contract sum?

    “Was there any due diligence before the cost was arrived at and when did the consultants carry out their survey of the proposed site? Where is the Bill of Quantity and when did the relevant office advertise for tender to be made?

    “Another pertinent question is that; why the desperation, on the part of Governor Makinde, to commit a bogus amount of money to any construction work in an area that would be covered by two different projects already awarded by the federal government?

    “There are strong indications that the ongoing Lagos-Ibadan expressway rehabilitation project would take off the expansion of the Lagos/Iwo road Interchange while again the recently awarded rehabilitation of Ibadan-Ife Expressway project would cover the remaining portion of the axis.

    “As it has become the usual practice of Makinde administration to put the cart before the horse, the people of the state cannot just watch while a government without any blueprint or action plan would continue to experiment after five months in office. So far, the only achievement of the current administration is the rebranded exercise books distributed recently with pomp and ceremony.

    “It would have been better to follow up on the exercise books distribution with the provision of pieces of furniture and release of running grants for the use in public primary and secondary schools across the state. Rather the state government embarked on loan bazaar as it awarded some supply contracts without anything to show for the billions of naira being spent on daily basis.

    “As if this was not enough, Governor Makinde again took to the mass media recently to announce his plan to construct a new Gbagi Market on the popular Exhibition Ground in Sango, Ibadan at a time experts blamed the vehicular traffic challenges bedevilling the state capital on the existing market places in the heart of the city. If the not sheer display of incompetence and the unbridled quest to mismanage public funds, there is no reason for this kind of desperation for contract awards by the present administration.” APC stated

    Why we scrapped N3,000 payment in Oyo schools – Makinde

    Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state on Wednesday warned those he described as ‘saboteurs’ in the state education sector to desist, warning that his administration will not take it lightly with anyone caught flouting the government directive and policies in the sector.

    This is as he also revealed that the management of the N3,000 collected from students in public schools across the state before he took over the governance was riddled in fraud.

    Makinde made the disclosures while speaking at the commissioning of a N50million worth school hall donated to Ilora Baptist Grammar School, Ilora by an Old student, Mr Remi Oyekola.

    The event was witnessed by top government functionaries, members of school management, old students, staff, traditional rulers, community leaders, religious leaders, parents and students of the state.

    While lamenting that many people have been hiding under the guise of his administration’s scrapping of the N3,000 being collected from the students to perpetrate various atrocities, Governor Makinde said he is aware that politicians prefer patching things up but that we would rather continue the reengineering process he began on May 29, 2019, until the entire educational system of the state of completely transformed.

    He also hinted that his decision to employ more teachers in the state is to put an end to recurring teacher problems in Oyo state public schools, a problem which predates his administration.

    He commended the donor of the building, Mr Oyetola as well as the Old students association for the various ways they have contributed to the development of the 56years old school, adding that although his administration will allow parents and willing individuals to contribute to improving the educational sector, he will not allow anyone mandate or charge any money from the students on account of supporting the school.

    Era of reliance on federal allocation over soon in Oyo—Makinde

    Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, said on Sunday that the era of going cap in hand to beg for federal allocations would soon be over in the State.

    A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted the Governor as making the declaration during a thanksgiving service held at the Living Faith Church AKA Winners Chapel, Bashorun, Ibadan.

    According to the statement, the Governor further stated that the idea of relying solely on federal allocations would soon be a thing of the past in Oyo State, as, according to him, the State’s Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) will be drastically improved through enhanced tax collection procedures.

    “We want to ensure that the era of going cap in hands to Abuja to beg for allocation will soon be over in Oyo State,” he said.
    The Governor also stated that his administration will continue to provide social amenities that will make the dividends of democracy get to all the people in all the nooks and crannies of the State.

    “We want the people of Oyo State to be able to have dividends of democracy right on their doorsteps,” he added.

    The Governor explained that his administration is rested on four pillars, which includes Education, Health, Security and Economic expansion through Agric value chain, adding that intervention lessons will soon be organised to assist the final year secondary school students in their WAEC and NECO examinations.

    “The four cardinal programmes of this Government include education, that is why free and qualitative education has come to stay in Oyo State.

    “For our WAEC Students, we should be starting intervention lessons for them shortly.
    “We also want to fix our health care delivery system and to improve the security system, as we want all of us to operate in a secure environment, so that we can be safe to pursue our aspirations.”
    Governor Makinde admonished the people of the State to keep praying for the success of his administration, adding that he will always lead with the fear of God.

    The Governor noted that prayers were necessary, stating that except God builds the house, those putting the structures together work but in vain.

    The Governor read from Psalms 127 vs 1 to buttress his submission.

    He further said: “It has been five months since we were sworn-in and there has been tremendous support from the people of Oyo State and the Church in particular.

    “I can tell you with all I have seen so far, without your prayers nobody can even survive one week on that seat because it is a hot seat.”

    “I have had to go to the State Secretariat at 2 a.m. to check the security situation

    “Also, sometimes I go out in the middle of the night to check the road being constructed and to know whether people of Oyo State sleep with their two eyes closed each time.

    “I realised that except you hand over this state to God to help us, you will just be moving in circles.”

    In his sermon, Bishop Thomas Aremu commended the Governor for introducing free education, saying that he was a product of free education.

    He urged the Governor to intensify efforts on the collection of taxes so that the government will get enough funds to execute the free education policy.

    “I pray that our God will bless your government with more resources and I also urge you to take note of tax collection. I regularly remit my PAYE tax even though it is being paid to Ogun State. I still make sure I pay to Oyo State since I am resident here. I urge our people to also pay taxes regularly so that government can have funds to execute its projects, ” the Bishop said.

  • Oyo Assembly invites FERMA as Motorists Protest over the state of Iseyin-Oyo Road

    The Oyo State House of Assembly has joined its voice to the ongoing protest by motorists and residents calling for the repair of the Oyo- Iseyin road, as it invites the representatives of the Federal Roads Management Agency, FERMA in the State.

    Raising it as a Matter of public importance during Thursday’s plenary, Hon. Adeola Bamidele representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju State Constituency noted that the alarming situation of the road justifies the ongoing protest and demands urgent attention from the Oyo State Government.

    “We know the road is a federal responsibility, but the users are mainly Oyo citizens.

    “Now, there has being an ongoing protest by motorists, commuters and residents since Monday because the people are really suffering.

    “The farmers cannot get to their farms, travelers and commuters are stranded and students now take stressful alternative roads.”

    The road which was said to be constructed in 1948 by the colonial administration still has an ancient bridge which a vehicle can ply at once.

    Describing Oke Ogun is the food basket of Oyo State, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin lamented the state of the two roads- Moniya-Iseyin and Oyo-Iseyin roads, which are the only routes connecting the Oyo North Senatorial district to the capital city of the State.

    He said, “if the two roads accessing the whole region is in bad shape, it is suddenly to describe this a partial disconnect of our people in Oke Ogun from other part of our dear State.

    “The consequence is that the food security in the state is threatened and the livelihood of farmers in Oke Ogun is under threat as well.

    “We are going to write FERMA representatives in Oyo State, we are inviting them to know the state of things on the road and how best can we secure swift repair of the road to ease the stress and save lives from damage.

    “The federal government refunded 10 billion naira recently to Kogi state for federal projects, it should come to our aid too in Oyo State.”

    Oyo Govt. to spend N8bn on Iwo Road interchange expansion – Makinde

    Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has disclosed that about N8 billion will be spent on the expansion of the popular Iwo-Road interchange in Ibadan, the state capital.

    Makinde, who made this known on Friday, when he visited Adogba Central Mosque at Iwo-Road, said that the project would be completed between nine and 11months.

    The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the governor was accompanied by his deputy, Alhaji Rauf Olaniyan, to the Jumat service, said he was there to solicit support from the congregation over government’s decision to demolish the mosque.

    He said the decision to demolish the mosque to pave way for the construction of an interchange was part of his administration’s plan to make Ibadan a befitting state capital, adding that a church around the interchange area would also be demolished.

    He dismissed the insinuations that the demolition had religion undertone, saying four out of the first six persons in government hierarchy in the state are Muslims.

    He said his administration was committed to the infrastructural development of the state, especially the state capital, so as to restore the old glory when Ibadan was the capital of the old Western Region.

    Makinde said government had provided another land for the building of a befitting mosque for the congregation and promised to personally spearhead the construction of the new mosque.

    He appealed to Muslim faithful to support the decision for the overall development of the state.

    Makinde Orders Return Of Wale Rufai, 24 Other BCOS Staff Redeployed By Ajimobi

    The Oyo state government has approved the redeployment of 25 former staff of Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) and 58 former staff of Board of Internal Revenue who were deployed by the immediate past administration of former Governor Abiola Ajimobi, to ministries and agency by the last administration back to their respective agencies.

    This executive decision will affect the veteran broadcaster, Mr. Wale Rufai, who had spent close to three decades in BCOS, and had been redeployed to Cultural Centre will return to the station.

    This were revealed by Commissioner for information of Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun after a carefully review of the request of the affected workers by the committee presented at the state executive meeting.

    He said since the Governor Seyi Makinde led administration came on board, petition and request have been made by workers who were redeployed from their former place of work to ministries and agencies by the last administration, hence the need for the present administration to set up committee to look into it.

    The committee in its report presented at the state executive meeting which was revealed to journalists by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun. He said government gave approval for 25 workers of former staff of the BCOS and 58 staff of the Board of Internal revenue back to their respective agencies.

    Governor Seyi Makinde has paid the remaining salaries of sacked chairmen and members of three statutory Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission, OYSIEC; Judicial Service Commission, JSC and Civil Service Commission.

    This came few weeks after Makinde sent names of nominees to replace the sacked members to the Oyo State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.

    This, according to sources who spoke with our correspondent, he make sure that the yet-to-be planned council election record minimal hitches.

    Members of the three commissions received their alerts last Wednesday.

    While the chairman and members of the OYSIEC were paid two-year advance, their counterparts in the JSC and CSC got three and a year year salary advance.

    Chairmen and members of the commissions spend 5 years in office.

    Those in OYSIEC had spent three years while those in JSC and CSC had barely spent one and half years before they were dissolved.

    Governor Makinde had dissolved the boards few days after his inauguration as governor, noting that “the state is aware that the tenure of members of the board has not yet expired and that the state government is prepared to offset salary and allowances payable to them till the expiration of their tenure.”

    Chairman and members of OYSIEC had been sacked on July 1, 2019, sparking reactions and counter reactions between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.

    However, the actual amount chairmen and members of the commissions got, could not be confirmed.

    Oyo Govt Reintroduces Boarding System For Public Schools

    Oyo State government said it has perfected all preparations towards reintroducing boarding system to public schools while 64,000 units of furniture would soon be distributed to all public schools in the State.
    The government also disclosed that the State has returned 34% of its out-of-school children population back to class and working towards mopping the rest of the population outside classroom back before the end of the year.

    The disclosure was made at the weekend by the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Kehinde Sangodoyin at the launching and dedication of projects embarked upon by Old Students of Ibadan City Academy, Ibadan.

    Sangodoyin hinted that the State would leave no stone unturned in its move to provide qualitative education without financial burden on parents and guardians.

    He added that teachers on level sixteen to seventeen would assume the title of ‘tutor generals’ while government would start paying running cost for the upkeep of public schools from Monday September 30th 2019.

    “Parts of the State education policy is to improve access and participation of our students in academic activities at all levels, be it primary or secondary and since the governor has removed levies hitherto paid by our students and has just approved the payment of running cost to our primary and secondary schools. Also we are equally working on providing furniture to schools. 64,000 units will soon be distributed to all schools across the State.

    “On the out-of-school children, I can assure you that we have 34% of the students back in the classrooms now and we are working to get them all back. We have a plan towards sensitizing the parents and facilitate procedures of mopping the rest of the number back to school from the street and to achieve this, we are going to work with SUBEB and UBEC to actualize this goal.

    “We are engaging all stakeholders, volunteers, traditional council, leaders of thought and the media to counsel the children wherever they may be found so that they will see the beauty of being back to school for the good of their own future.

    “Plans are underway to provide them with uniform, we have free textbooks and notebooks and we are supplying them with feeding to retain their interest after getting them back totally. We all know that poverty contributed to the cause of their being outside the school and these items are the major needs that will make them come to school and stay.

    “Engr. Seyi Makinde has proved himself and his administration that he does not bluff. He talks and back his talk with actions and this has been exhibited in his stride in education, security, health and workers welfare among other things.”

    The Commissioner enjoined school administrators to cooperate with government in the area of policy actualization, warning them not to collect money from students for the free textbooks and notebooks provided by government.

    His Royal Majesty, The Onjo of Okeho land, Oba Rafiu Mustapha Osuolale Adeitan 11, has installed Chief Iroko Michael Olugbenga as the new Baale of Bode land in Okeho, under Kajola Local Government area of Oyo State.

    The new Baale, a descendant of Okanlawon Baale Bode Afolabi/ Olaoye, studied Business Management at Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) Ile-ife, Osun State and worked with Ogungbola & Sons Limited as External Auditor, General Manager, BISADET Company (Publishers of Children Monthly Magazine) based in Lagos State, Rep. @ Friendly Top Nig. LTD, Apata NNPC, Ibadan. Also worked at Liberty Stadium, Ibadan as General Manager and currently CEO, Olugbega Michael Agro and Allied Farms, Okeho, Kajola Local Government.

    In his speech, Oba Rafiu Mustapha Osuolale urged the young Baale to use his reign to bring development to the town while carrying all sons and daughters of the community along in decision making.

    Speaking at the event, the new Baale thanked Oba Rafiu Mustapha Osuolale, all sons and daughters of Okeho home and abroad as well as loving people of Bode for their unflinching support given to him and promised to use his experience and contacts to bring development to the community.

    He called on sons and daughters of Bode community, home and diaspora to be back home and give the needed support towards the development of the town.

    “I am passionately appealing to all well-meaning sons and daughters of the town, friends and corporate organizations to let us join hands in ensuring that we attract the needed development to our great ancestral home. We are all winners in the contest for this position, there’s no loser as we are all out for the good of the community.”

    The new Baale also assured all and sundry of his willingness to work with all as his doors are opened to advice and constructive criticisms aimed at moving the community forward.

    Speaking with newsmen, many sons and daughters of Bode and Okeho altogether expressed their appreciation to Oba Rafiu Mustapha for ensuring a smooth transition from one Baale to another and for them having a young, vibrant and peace-loving man as their new Baale.

    The new Baale however used the occasion to appreciate the Chieftains of PDP, chieftains of APC, the Onjo in Council (all the Baales from various communities in Okeho), religious leaders, Chief Raji Bomode-Oku, Chief Moshood Badmus Olokuku, Chief Oyebanji Oyewumi (O’Solider), Hon.     Makinde forward names Of OYSIEC Members to Oyo Assembly

    Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, on Thursday, approved the composition of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC).

    A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that the Governor, in a letter dated 18 September, 2019, forwarded the names of eight individuals to the House of Assembly, for consideration as chairman and members of the commission.

    “I wish to inform Your Rt. Honourable and other Honourable Members of the composition of the State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC). The following personalities have been considered suitable, based on their track records, to oversee and conduct elections into the Local Governments in the State,” the letter read in part.

    Governor Makinde sought for the consideration of the House of Assembly for the nominees.

    According to the letter, Barr. Isiaka Olagunju was nominated as chairman of the commission, while Comrade Adeniyi Afeez Babatunde, Alhaja Ganiyat Saka, Mr. Olanrewaju Emmanuel, Chief Kumi Agboola, Mr. Remi Ayoade, Mr. Sunday Falan and Mr. Adeojo Elias, were nominated as members.

    Oyo ready to shut illegal schools

    Oyo State Government has promised to shut illegal private primary schools operating in the state.

    It said a task force would be set up to address the menace. The Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Nureni Adeniran, spoke yesterday during an inspection of schools in Ibadan.

    He said the government would set up a task force, to be headed by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, in collaboration with the State Universal Basic Education Board. Adeniran said the task force would close down mushroom private schools endangering the quality of education.

    He urged parents and guardians to enrol their children and wards in public schools, noting that the free education policy by Governor Seyi Makinde was yielding positive results.

    Some of the schools the SUBEB chairman and his team visited include: People’s Primary School, Adeoyo; St. Williams School, Oke-Ado; AUD School, Foko; Islamic Primary School, Bode; St. David Primary School, Kudeti.

    Others are I.M.G. Primary Schools, Orita-Aperin and Ode-Aje; Ikolaba Community Primary School; Methodist Primary School, Bodija; and Methodist Primary School, Mokola, all in Ibadan metropolis.

    Inclusive Government: Makinde appoints opposition as aides

    The Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has appointed two opposition candidates as officials in his cabinet.

    On Thursday, Mr Makinde approved the appointment of the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Bolaji Ayorinde, as Special Counsel to the Governor of Oyo State.

    Also, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and candidate of the party for the Akinyele/Lagelu Federal Constituency in the February 23 House of Representatives election, Yemi Aderibigbe, was appointed as Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

    The appointments were contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Taiwo Adisa.

    Additionally, Wale Onaolapo was appointed as the chairman of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund.

    A former Principal Protocol Officer of the University of Ibadan, Gboyega Badejo, was appointed as the Director-General (Protocol) to the Governor.

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, on Wednesday has arrested two suspects of internet frauds who specialize in stealing people’s identities online to defraud foreign nationals.

    The suspects, Akeju Crown Babatunde, 31, and Agbanah Toba, 35, were arrested at different base in Ibadan following intelligence gathered on their alleged involvement in fraudulent activities.

    After thorough examination of data and documents retrieved from them, the Commission was able to establish enough ground for prosecuting the suspects for acts contrary to the provisions of Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act, 2015, and would be accordingly charged to court soon.
