The Federal Government of Nigeria has partnered with international e-learning giant, Coursera, to train 36,000 Nigerian youths in high-demand fields, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the landmark partnership today during a signing ceremony held on the sidelines of the prestigious Education World Forum in London.
Fully Funded Global Certifications
Under this agreement, the Federal Government has fully funded 36,000 learning licences across Coursera and Pluralsight for the first year of the initiative. This financial backing ensures that beneficiaries will access world-class, premium training tracks at no personal cost.
The initiative, structured under the newly unveiled Digital Training Academy (DTA) framework, aims to directly remove financial barriers that often prevent young Africans from acquiring premium technical qualifications. Upon completion, participants will earn globally recognized industry certifications designed to give them a competitive edge in the local and international job markets.
Beyond AI and cybersecurity, the curriculum covers other critical pillars of the modern digital economy, including: Data Science, Cloud Computing and Software Engineering
A Strategic Delivery Model
To ensure maximum penetration and effective student mentorship, the Ministry of Education is utilizing a hybrid delivery model in collaboration with two prominent Nigerian tertiary institutions:
National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN): Leveraging its nationwide campus infrastructure to guarantee equal learning access across all geopolitical zones
Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH): Providing localized, industry-focused expertise, dedicated facilitators, and physical mentorship clusters
Alignment with National Agendas
Speaking at the London forum, Dr Alausa emphasised that the initiative represents a core milestone under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises human capital development and youth empowerment.
“The Renewed Hope Agenda recognizes that digital competency is no longer optional. It is foundational,” Dr. Alausa stated. “The Digital Training Academy is a direct investment in helping young Nigerians compete and lead in the global digital economy. This is a covenant between the government and Nigerian youth.”
The move coincides with broader national tech mandates, including the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy’s ongoing 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) pipeline, signaling a unified multi-ministry push to combat an estimated $11 billion annual economic drain caused by the domestic digital skills gap, and the recent Nigeria Government partnership with Google to train Civil Servants of Nigeria on the Application of Artificial intelligence (AI) in Public Service.
These will make learning on Coursera accessible and affordable for Nigeria Youths.
Industry analysts have praised the collaborative structure of the DTA. By pairing Coursera’s industry-standard curricula with NOUN’s academic reach and YABATECH’s practical mentorship, the program is positioned to move past the high drop-out rates that often plague purely virtual mass-education schemes.
The Ministry confirmed that application portals and selection criteria for the first cohort of 36,000 fellows will be made public via official government channels in the coming weeks.
