One of the side events marking the 2024 World Environmental Day, the Environmental Conflict Mediation and Women Development Initiative (ECOMWEDI), in partnership with the Women Environmental Programme (WEP), is organizing a one-day awareness programme on the benefits of organic agriculture production and consumption.
The event will take place on June 5, 2024, at the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Management, University of Ibadan, Oyo State.
The workshop will highlight the benefits of organic agriculture production and consumption. This initiative aims to foster sustainable agricultural practices and create a robust market for organic products in Oyo State.
This programme is supported by Women Engage for a Common Future and aligns with the Forest for a Just Future programme, spearheaded by the Green Livelihood Alliance (GLA), which seeks to ensure that tropical forests and forest landscapes are sustainably and inclusively governed. This initiative aims to mitigate and adapt to climate change, uphold human rights, and safeguard local livelihoods in Nigeria and internationally.
While speaking about the upcoming event, the Founder of the Environmental Conflict Mediation and Women Development Initiative (ECOMWEDI), Mrs Ijeoma Ladele said, ” As part of the need to raise awareness and demonstrate the benefits of organic agriculture, through this workshop, we aim to stimulate demand and support for organic products, ensuring economic viability for farmers and producers.”
“We believe this workshop will help promote environmentally friendly farming methods that reduce vegetation degradation and support the sustainable management of natural resources.
Other activities lined up include- an advocacy campaign carried out to the University Health Services at the University of Ibadan, the Oyo State Ministry of Environment, and
media engagement at Diamond FM, University of Ibadan.
Participants at the workshop are expected to be drawn from various strata of society, including Men and Women Organic farmers, producers, consumers, youth, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture, Civil Society Organisations, environmental and economic experts, and media representatives.
