Nigeria’s corporate sector has been well represented in Africa.com’s 2026 Definitive List of Women CEOs, with leading Nigerian women executives and globally recognised brands operating in the country featured among the women identified as leaders of some of Africa’s largest companies.

Among the Nigerian corporate leaders recognised are Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc; Yemisi Edun, Managing Director of FCMB Group Plc; Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank Plc; Dr. Owen Omogiafo, OON, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc; and Miriam Olusanya, Managing Director of Guaranty Trust Bank Limited.

The Nigerian representation also extends to senior executives leading the African or Nigerian operations of major global brands. They include Yvonne Ike, Managing Director and Head of Sub-Saharan Africa at Bank of America Corporation; Nneka Enwereji, Chief Executive Officer of Citibank Nigeria; Dr. Folasade Femi-Lawal, Country Manager and Area Business Head for West Africa at Mastercard; and Oreoluwa Atinmo, Managing Director of FanMilk Nigeria, part of Danone.

The recognition places some of Nigeria’s most influential women in corporate leadership alongside other female executives leading major businesses across the African continent.

The 2026 Definitive List of Women CEOs, compiled by Africa.com, is an independent, Bloomberg-data-driven ranking of women holding top executive positions in Africa’s largest companies. According to Africa.com, more than 1,500 companies across Africa’s stock exchanges were screened to identify women occupying the highest levels of corporate leadership.

The list cuts across key sectors including banking and insurance, mining and industrials, consumer goods, healthcare, real estate and telecommunications. It features women leaders from countries including Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mauritius and South Africa.

The 2026 edition is presented across three broad categories: chief executives of publicly traded companies, leaders of major divisions or subsidiaries within large listed groups, and regional executives leading African operations for global multinational companies.

For Nigeria, the strong representation reflects the growing influence of women in shaping corporate strategy, financial services, consumer markets and business growth, while also placing some of the country’s leading corporate brands on a prominent continental leadership platform.

Zenith Bank, FCMB Group, Fidelity Bank, Transcorp and Guaranty Trust Bank are among the Nigerian brands represented through their female chief executives and senior business leaders, highlighting the increasing prominence of women at the highest levels of corporate decision-making in the country.

Commenting on the significance of the ranking, Teresa Clarke, Chairman and Executive Editor of Africa.com, said the recognition was particularly significant because of the independent and data-driven methodology behind the list.

“This recognition is meaningful precisely because it is data-driven and independent. Built on objective metrics, the list highlights where these remarkable leaders stand. Our hope is that it inspires the next generation of women to see a clear path to the highest levels of African business,” Clarke said.

Beyond the Nigerian representation, the 2026 edition also highlights a significant leadership milestone within the FirstRand Group in South Africa. For the first time in the group’s history, women are leading its three core pillars, with Mary Vilakazi serving as Group Chief Executive Officer, Lytania Johnson as Chief Executive Officer of FNB, and Emrie Brown as Chief Executive Officer of RMB.

The three leaders are featured in a special conversation on the experiences that shaped their careers, the significance of their appointments, and the changing landscape of leadership across Africa’s financial sector.

The discussion also examines the growing influence of women in corporate leadership and the opportunities available to the next generation of African business leaders.

The unveiling of the 2026 Definitive List was scheduled as a livestreamed event, featuring the release of the ranking and an executive conversation with the three FirstRand leaders.

For Nigeria, however, the list provides an important reflection of the growing presence of women at the helm of some of the country’s most significant financial institutions and corporate organisations.

From banking and financial services to consumer goods and multinational business, the executives represented on the list demonstrate the increasing role Nigerian women are playing in leading complex organisations, driving business growth, managing stakeholder confidence and shaping the future direction of major brands.

The inclusion of executives leading both indigenous Nigerian companies and the local operations of global multinationals further underscores the diversity and depth of female corporate leadership in the country.

Their presence on the 2026 Definitive List is also expected to inspire a new generation of women professionals and entrepreneurs, reinforcing the message that corporate leadership at the highest level is increasingly open to competence, experience, strategic vision and the ability to deliver sustainable business results.
