In a bid to support the health workers in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, Nigerian Fintech Company also known as OPay made a donation of medical face masks to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) as part of the Nigerian Stock Exchange’s COVID-19 #MaskupForAllNg campaign, on Thursday, 4th June, 2020.
Mr. Bola Adeeko, the Divisional Head, Shares Services of the Nigerian Stock Exchange said the campaign was borne out of the need to join hands with various sectors to fight COVID-19. “We made a call to different sectors to collaborate with us to lend a helping hand to Nigerians at this time. The medical arm is the most hit, and we know no help will be too small. We have so far dispatched a lot to the 6 geo-political zones in Nigeria and we intend to do more.” Mr. Adeeko also hopes that the items donated would translate into saving lives as they are being used.
In his remarks, Mr. Olakunle Olumuyiwa, Director of Remittance, PayCom Nig. Ltd. (OPay), was full of praises for health workers. He minced no words when he went on to appreciate the effort of frontline health workers. Calling them the “heroes of this time’. He said, “despite the risk involved, health workers have shown selflessness, strength and determination and we appreciate the effort in trying to care for those who have been hit. We also believe that this campaign will educate the populace on how to protect themselves.”
In the same vein, the Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, Prof. Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo welcomed the donors warmly. He said the frontline medical personnel need to be adequately protected so as to reduce the spate at which frontline workers are being infected. He noted that the hospital needs a steady flow of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which can never be enough, “but we have been getting by, thanks to the Lagos State Government, well-meaning Nigerians and Organizations such as yours.”
While appreciating the entourage, he specifically commended the determination and commitment of the OPay, “despite the fact that your company suffered a setback during the recent motorcycle ban, you still deemed it fit to make a ground-breaking donation, I commend your spirit and wish your company better days ahead.” Prof. Fabamwo assured them that the masks will be put to good use and the company would be placed on the honors’ roll for donors during the COVID-19 pandemic.
