The Nigerian equities market traded for four sessions during the week after the Federal Government declared Friday, 12 June 2026, a public holiday for Democracy Day. The market ended the week on a positive note, rebounding from prior losses, driven largely by stronger activity in the insurance, banking, and oil & gas sectors. The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) rose 0.88% week-on-week to close at 244,738.74 points, compared to 242,593.31 points in the previous week. Market capitalization also increased by ₦1.38 trillion to ₦156.97 trillion, reflecting improved investor sentiment. Overall, the market maintained strong broader performance, with a quarter-to-date return of 21.59% and a year-to-date return of 57.27%.
Sector performance on the Nigerian Exchange was broadly positive for the week, with three of five major sector indices closing higher, driven by renewed buy-side interest. A total of 40 equities gained, while 52 declined, reflecting a mixed but resilient market tone. Top gainers included TIP (+14.36%), NEM (+13.33%), FIRSTHOLDCO (+11.29%), OANDO (+10.42%), AIRTELAFRI (+10.00%), and DANGSUGAR (+8.61%), alongside gains in MTNN, WEMABANK, ETERNA, and GTCO. On the downside, losses were led by FIDSON (-25.86%), UHOMREIT (-17.36%), UNILEVER (-10.26%), OKOMUOIL (-10.00%), and GUINNESS (-9.22%), with additional declines in ZENITHBANK, DANGCEM, UBA, ACCESSCORP, and SEPLAT among others. Overall, market sentiment remained mixed but slightly constructive, with selective buying in key large caps offsetting broader profit-taking.
Meanwhile, a total turnover of 4.96 billion shares worth ₦207.52 billion in 235,966 deals was traded this week by investors on the floor of the Exchange, in contrast to a total of 3.97 billion shares valued at ₦175.66 billion that exchanged hands last week in 343,587 deals. The Financial Services Industry (measured by volume) led the activity chart with 4.12 billion shares valued at ₦84.61 billion traded in 96,165 deals: thus contributing 82.92% and 40.77% to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively. The Services Industry followed with 232.48 million shares worth ₦4.96 billion in 17,614 deals. Third place was the Industrial Goods Industry, with a turnover of 144.99 million shares worth ₦39.08 billion in 24,775 deals.
Trading in the top three equities, namely STERLING FINANCIAL HOLDINGS COMPANY PLC, FCMB GROUP PLC and ACCESS HOLDINGS PLC, and (measured by volume), accounted for 2.88 billion shares worth ₦36.19 billion in 15,533 deals, contributing 58.09% and 17.44% to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.
Overall, forty (40) equities appreciated in price during the week, higher than twenty-three (23) equities in the previous week. Fifty-three (53) equities depreciated in price, lower than sixty-five (65) equities in the previous week, while fifty-three (53) equities remained unchanged, lower than fifty-eight (58) recorded in the previous week.
